Favorite RTS and why do you like it
Atom523 replied to tubgoatstugboats's topic in Computer and Console
I tried to download Mechcommander Gold through the official site. Sadly when i tried to download the no cd crack that download didn't exist anymore. Do you know where i can get it? I have part 2 but while that has better controls and a lot more options the story line of the first one i find far more enjoyable. -
I have to agree, space battles looked interesting, but the ground combat looked a bit iffy. Honestly this looked more like a really cool RTS game then an MMO to me. I would love to play another good space RTS Star Trek game.

You are right in that the worst thing about an MMO is the fact that other people are needed to play through it. For every good ally there are 20 **** who will ruin it for everyone around it. I guess i can hope that most of the jackasses will leave after playing it for a while while leaving a smaller but higher quality fanbase. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, I will most likely give the game a shot and hope that the other players won't ruin it. I am unsure about the group dialog thingie, i will agree that there will be many people who will be there just to mess things up for people. I hope that there will be a way to compensate for those kinds of people.

.....I actually started playing WoW because i liked the Warcraft lore..... Well combat wise i actually like the slow combat where you can take your time with what your next attack will be, probably since i love RPGs so much. I know it isn't KOTOR 3 but a good quality MMO in the star wars universe with a branching dialog system would be very interesting. Will it be good? Who knows really, but in my opinion Bioware has made it different enough from other MMOs so far to be worth a look.
-
Other MMOs have dialog choices that affect the story? I have only played WoW so I may have missed the other ones.
-
Also it looks like you will have to take some care with the people you group with. You don't want someone who is going to make stupid decisions for you in the dialog areas which can really screw you up. For example even as evil i wouldn't just kill the captain and then go into a difficult battle with his inexperienced first officer. I would make him do the attack and then execute him if he was still confrontational, why waste the talent unless i really had to? Also the little kid in me loved the Smuggler kicking the enemy in the groin, that was awesome.

In durotar NE of Barrens. I mean in the picture. I see a boulder. Hey.....um, where could I get a cheap laptop with at LEAST 15 gigs? he is basically showing off a wall of the city. Honestly I understand that a lot of people don't like the look of WoW but yeah he is pointing the camera at a wall and saying "look how ugly it is!" The city has much more impressive views then that.

after seeing the gamescom 09 gameplay video i must say i am quite excited for this game. I like the dialog system and the fluidity of the combat. The idea that you can actually go through a mission in different ways depending on your choices in an MMO is quite impressive. Now if they keep up that quality of performance when it actually comes out i most likely will buy it. Sure the graphic's aren't cutting edge, but really who cares? I have been playing video games for more then 20 years, if the characters are not jagged and clipping everywhere I cannot really consider it ugly. Here is hoping that the game continues to look good.

Very informative. I did a search for stores near me and came up with 3 more. Thanks! That is great, I would definitely recommend checking out those stores and finding out if they do demo games for beginners, if they do it would be the best way to get into it. Sure you can read all about gaming but a lot of gaming is the social interaction with people. Also don't get discouraged if the game master isn't that friendly or good, or if the other players are bratty, finding the right group of people to play with is the biggest issue, the game system in my opinion is secondary. The right people can make even the worst system playable and bad people can make even the best system crappy.

Yeah, most pen and paper role playing games take a lot of investment of time and energy. D&D requires a lot of memorization of charts, how far you can move etc. Personally i cannot stand games that force you to constantly refer to charts during play until you memorize them. You might want to look around at different systems and try to find one that suits your personal taste. Perhaps visit a gaming store and talk to the employees about different systems and what they think about them. Also there are gaming stores that have areas where they demo games for people, I find that those are quite useful for experiencing different systems.

Well besides being really short i found nothing wrong with Republic Commando. What didn't you like about it? The thing is, Lucas & Co. always brag around that Star Wars is all about story and mythology and strong characters. Well Republic Commando (and the "new" Star Wars anyway) refute this allegation. You just play a soulless grunt within the always same setting (space ship, desert planet, jungle planet. Funny, they always use the same), put atop the boring und underwhelming consoly-gameplay, and you have the definition of a poor, mediocre Star Wars game. This is the new LA! Well, i found that the characters weren't souless or boring, sure they cannot be as fleshed out as an RPG character but considering it was an FPS they didn't do a bad job. I mean look at the X Wing series, there is the perfect definition of souless grunts with no depth yet they are considered to be in the better LA days. Might as well slam those games. Also for a console FPS the controls and gameplay was quite good.

Hey if LA releases an enhanced X Wing, or TIE Fighter remake on Steam that i can play on vista i would snap that up in a second. Sure i would love a brand new X Wing game (preferably one where you are with the Empire like TIE Fighter) but being able to play the classics with a face lift and updated controls I would be very happy regardless.

The joke is that Star Wars: Galactic Battlegrounds was just Age of Empires reskinned to look like Star Wars: I actually found the game kinda fun really. Perhaps it is because of the fact that i enjoyed Age of Empires 2 so much as well heh heh. Though it did seem a bit odd collecting resources with Star Wars characters. I would love a new X Wing game that added in a lot more ships fighters and larger vessels i am tired of escorting the same few types of cargo ships and having each faction have so few capitol ships. X Wing alliance made did that a little better and i also really liked the fact that war ships could shoot down torpedoes and missiles. I would also like the promotions they give you to matter, give the player more responsibilities more options etc when they gain rank. Make them in charge of the squadron, or if they are a very high rank give them options to influence the actual missions. It felt odd in TIE Fighter when i was a General and I couldn't order anyone to do anything except my wing mates. Perhaps giving me a choice who i fly for and perhaps one or two times in the game give me the option of defecting to the other side. Might help mix things up and make them more interesting. I wouldn't mind starting off as a mercenary faction and then be given the choice if i want to join the Rebellion or the Empire or stay neutral.

Seconded, i loved the first, plus all the mods that came out for it. 2 would be fantastic and i cannot wait to see what the mod community could do with it. They just need to make the ground battles a bit more fun.

Actually there is a decent amount of info on the T Wing. It is around the same speed as a TIE Interceptor i believe, and has slightly better weapons hull and shields then an R 41 Star Chaser (which is slightly better then a Z 95 but not as good as an X Wing) However it was suppose to replace the A Wing so it was dumped and sold to pirates and smugglers to make the alliance money. Nihilus5078 - I must protest about the TIE Defender being put in the same class as the B Wing. It is faster then an A Wing, and tougher then an X Wing with more firepower then a B Wing. It is totally unbalanced since it is superior to any other fighter out there. As much as i love the fighter it would make the empire too strong. Unless they gimp it like they did in X Wing Alliance which bothered me, kinda like how they also gimped the missile boat, bah!

waitwaitwait...back up a minute. are you using this to defend the re-use and re-treading of the idea in FO3? because if it's ridiculous in FO2 it's even more ridiculous in FO3. we've already established that FO2 has a silly side which many die-hards wish was a bit less silly but this doesn't exempt FO3 from totally missing the mark and making something which started out "ridiculous" into something which became for all intents and purposes ****ing retarded. Wait...i defended Fallout 3? All i did was say that Fallout 2 was ridiculous, mainly in comparison to Fallout 1. I am one of those people who feels that Fallout 2 was an incredibly fun game that dragged the theme and tone of Fallout 1 through the mud. I think Fallout 3 is a poor man's Fallout and is no where near as good as any of the previous 2. Don't put words in my mouth and say that i am defending Fallout 3 when i didn't. Basic replicator that most likely cannot produce anything beyond fertilizers and seeds. That's hardly magical. They never say what it can replicate, you are making things up to defend your position. It is a replicator and we have no idea what its capabilities are, for all we know the GECK can replicate building materials computer chips etc. If you notice the village of Arroyo looks far more advanced then anything out there besides Vault City and NCR both which were made from GECKS (well at least that was the excuse given for NCR in the second game as they never mentioned anything like that in the first game)
-
Yeah a REPLICATOR! That isn't some basic device, they are pretty much pulling from Star Trek with that one. It is a suitcase that can simply convert things into other things, that is pretty much magical compared to everything else in the setting. But what else can one expect from Fallout 2, That game was over the top with just about everything. Massive amounts of fun but Black Isle took the first game turned up the ridiculous when it came to Fallout 2. The GECK was even more ridiculous then New Reno and that city made no sense what so ever (fun quests though)
-
Anytime you ask about a GECK in a conversation with someone who actually knows what one is, they tell you it's a bunch of seeds, fertilizer, and a water purifier. And who would that be? I can't seem to remember anyone in the game telling you that's what the thing actually is. I know that's what the Fallout Bible states, for all that's worth, but I'm talking in-game lore. Pretty sure you can ask around in Vault City for the GECK description. The reason the GECK is a super terraforming device in Fallout 3 is because that's what the Genesis Device in Wrath of Khan was, just like the radiation chamber scenes at the Jefferson Memorial that were taken from Wrath of Khan. Really? I don't remember anyone in Vault City actually bothering to explain what the GECK is. The closest thing to an explanation that i can remember at this moment is that guy in New Reno in the pharmacy. He gives a basic description. I have played Fallout 2 many many times, and i always got the impression that the GECK was some magical suitcase capable of turning a desert into an oasis...with a nifty pen flashlight too. Also remember it turns your village which is having a drought and disease into a paradise within a few years. I am pretty sure seeds fertilizer and a water purifier (a suitcase sized one) couldn't do that so fast. Also Vault city was a bit more impressive then what you are all suggesting the the GECK really is.

As opposed to the fake one?
-
Yeah a bunch of the artillery plus a few Obelisks of Light and your base was pretty much safe from ground attacks
-
Oh yeah. It was real cool. Until it decided to try crossing a frozen river instead of using the concrete bridge right next to it. Yeah the pathfinding in Tib Sun was a bit retarded, the game had tons of flaws but it had a really good concept and the things it did well it did amazingly....though the things it did poorly it really did poorly. Thankfully it had more of the good then the bad. *remembers perfectly accurate REALLY long range you-have-to-loose-something-to-kill-this artillery that nod got* yeah i remember those, and the expantion got GDI the craptacular Juggernaut which missed 75% of the time. NOD Artillery was vastly overpowered, fun when you had them though. Ah Orca bombers, i remember spamming those, build tons and AA doesn't matter anymore. like 5 of them will blast away entire regions of the enemy base, it was grand.

yeah, that was the bad thing about Tib Sun, they had hard caps on the armor units There were also too many missions where you couldn't build a base, i know the need to toss in something different to make it exciting and i LOVED the map and the option of choosing to do a side mission to make the main mission easier but some of them were just frustrating. I know it is too much to wish for to bring back the map and side missions but i really wish EA would. Also making the Mammoth MK 2 not suck would be awesome, it was too cool a unit to be ignored.
-
I am glad they are bringing back the walker units for GDI, while i did enjoy C&C3 i did miss the futuristic units like the wolverine and the Titan. Lets face it a Mammoth mk 2 by itself wasn't very impressive, but if we can make multiple like the screen shot implies then they will be back on my love list.
