hmm hard to pick, i think i will be the silly one who only picks characters from console games Rydia (FF4) great summoner who is a master of black destructive magic Talloon (DQ4) master merchant who can also handle himself in a fight Lucca (CT) inventor extraordinare and fire mage KOS MOS (XS) come on, awesome android who can blow away fleets T.G. Cid (FFT) easily one of the most blatantly overpowered add ons to any group Edgar (FF6) someone has to slay the babes and use Lucca's inventions Fei Fong Wong (XG) after he combines with his other personalities he is quite powerful (i assume that i cannot bring Xenogears) Magus (CT) sure he is evil like others have mentioned but if he is helping you then you are on the path to victory Ryu (BoF) sure he is the silent protagonist but being able to turn into a multitude of dragons is always helpful Isis (FFL2) it never hurts to have a goddess on one's side

Random generation vs. Careful planning
Atom523 replied to Kaftan Barlast's topic in Pen-and-Paper Gaming
In my admiringly limited role playing experience i do prefer naturally to be able to craft my character myself but at the same time i occasionally like playing as a randomized character (or a character that someone else designed) For me at least it is the challenge of playing a role that is not familiar to me, something that i hadn't truly prepared for. I personally lean toward combat lite characters who tend to rely on mystical skills and words to get out of situations. I have gotten pretty decent at playing these types of characters and tend to rely on others to fight my battles for me, however on occasion i do want to try other things. I might not be that good at playing a barbarian type character but on the occasions where i had to do it i did have fun. Trying to think in a more aggressive way and not relying on sneaking and magic ends up being an entirely new way of playing and it is fun to challenge myself into trying it occasionally. Now given a standard choice i would pick of course to design my negotiator but it is fun to occasionally be thrust into a role that i am not quite prepared for. -
Personally l enjoy bioware's games but Obsidian does make some decent ones too. I guess my first choice would be Bioware and second Obsidian.

Steady on there, fellah. We don't mean to seem unfriendly. But we've had a passel full of rogues, bots, and spam merchants come through here, and if you kick off by sounding like one then you're apt to get a roasting. Just ride it out and keep on in. I understand the aversion to bots in some forums i joined a while back we had a lot of problems with bots especially when for a several month period there were no mods so the spam kept on coming up. Usually then the bots were mainly porn bots, don't recall too many actually sticking to the theme of the forum . But i haven't been a member of this forum very long so perhaps i just had lower quality bots infesting those forums ha ha ha. I do appreciate your post though, and i wasn't sure at first if i should actually make the topic without first posting in some other topics which probably would have been a good idea to let people know first that i was a real person. The benefits of hindsight indeed. Though i don't mind the occasional jeering, in the first forum i joined i got flamed horribly, though mainly because i joined the minority faction of the forum (partially out of spite i must admit) and defenders of that group weren't really looked well upon, so i will take your advice and keep on truckin.

I was actually pleasantly surprised with how good command and conquer 3 was. I was disappointed with generals and thought that EA would screw up the main series but i must say that i really enjoyed the game. Now they need to pleasantly surprise me again with a high quality Dungeon Keeper 3 heh heh.

Don't like the idea of being burnt, i usually dislike pain. However as much as i enjoy people posting in this thread, i would prefer that when they did it was a bit more meaningful. Now if no one has interest in the game well that is one thing, disappointing but i can accept that. However i would prefer that this thread doesn't get closed down due to it degrading into jokes and side comments. The game is built to be really easy to get into and simple to play. There is no need to constantly refer to charts or graphs, and i personally have found it to be a breath of fresh air from the games i used to play.

Maybe after you've done some more time here people will bite. Glad to see you're no toaster though. Perhaps, but i would hope that people wouldn't simply dismiss me based on the fact that i only recently joined the forums. I do make some mighty fine toast but i am not robotic, though some cybernetic parts wouldn't be something that i would reject offhand.

Well they said it will have a similar dialog tree. That doesn't mean similar dialog. They probably assumed that more people know what the dialog is like in Oblivion and didn't want people to think that it was a standard RPG where people will simply say one thing when you approach them. At least that is how i interpret it, basically saying that you will have multiple responses to choose from when you speak to someone.

Nothing? No interest, oh well. Again sorry if i give off the wrong impression, just trying to see if anyone was interested in trying out a game that i really like. Not trying to sell anyone anything i just love the game and want to see if anyone else would be interested. Sorry if it wasn't appreciated.

Please tell me I'm not the only one...

There is a slight problem with what you said. First of all, i know exactly where the term role comes from. I am a huge fan of Shakespeare and theater so i know where these terms come from. However what you are failing to see is that those characters are set. The actors who played those parts had no creative license, they read the lines the way the director told them to do it. Sure there would be a small amount of creativity but when they preformed those roles they did the same performance again and again. The actors don't decide how their characters should react to a specific event, they have their script and they have to follow it or the director will find some one who will. Therefore these roles have more in common with the games like Final Fantasy where there is a set role for the actor to play. The ability to make choices doesn't make an RPG. Now it might be what you want in a game but that doesn't mean that it is needed in all RPGs. You are simply the actor you play the roles that you have before you. Some plays allow more freedom then others but that doesn't mean that the plays with more freedom for the actor are truer plays then the ones where the actor must follow his strict role. In both you are playing a role and both are plays. Richard the Third played by Laurence Olivier is no more Richard the Third played by Ian Mckellen. They were quite different as Olivier played a Richard who was far closer to the play then Ian Mkellen, but neither is a more true telling. It is the same with RPGs. Even if you play a defined role you are still acting that role except you are simply following the script while in a game like Fallout you have more freedom to choose. Also you will notice that i said that i have to feel for the characters who i play as to truly enjoy the game. When the character is me yes there is a level of feeling but when i am playing a specific role where i don't make decisions i need to feel something for the character that i am playing as or else i just can't enjoy it. Characters like Cecil in FF4 evoke emotions within me. I can feel for his plight and want him to succeed. I want to see what he will do next and the choices he will make. It is like reading a book, i have no control over what the page says but that doesn't make me attach myself to the character any less. The character i play as doesn't have to be me in another mans shoes. I can feel an attachment to a predefined character just as much as i can to a character who i shape. If you can't get attached to a character that you don't develop yourself i am sorry to hear that but it doesn't mean that it is less of a role playing experience. -

Well, personally for me, an RPG is a game where you play a specific role (either created by you or someone else) and during the adventure there is a goodly amount of character development. You don't simply have a person who you follow and learn nothing about, you need to be able to explore his or her personality and emotions. The character has to become more complex as you play as them and you must develop feelings for that character. Using this definition i can accept games like Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest, Xenogears, Fallout, Vampire the Masquerade, Knights of the Old Republic, and many other games as an RPG. I don't need to control the destiny of the person i play as. I don't know how to play as the Capitan of the royal air force for a kingdom, i am excited about following the adventures of this man though the ups and downs of his adventure. (Final Fantasy 4) At the same time seeing the development of a character who i shaped myself and who's actions i control are also very exciting. I love my P&P characters because i am basically putting myself into a different personality. They have their own way of doing things but there is always a part of me in there. Both of these in my mind deserve to be role playing games. In both ways i am playing the role of someone who i am not and who has attributes that i admire. -
Out of those two ships i would take the Hawk as it seems to break down far less often then the Falcon. However if i can pick any ship i would have to go with the good old Imperial Class star destroyer. I mean massive firepower and shielding yet still able to match the Falcon in speed in a straight line, definitely my pick. Of course i would need several tens of thousands of people to help me fly it, but i am sure i can find them.

I kind of enjoyed the demo. It seems to have a decent concept but i am not sure if i am crazy about the controls on the 360. I have always loved playing as the evil overlord type, Dungeon Keeper 1 and 2 are some of my favorite games. I was really disappointed when Bullfrog was bought out and the third game was shelved. So i will be optimistic about this game until i learn more. I hope there is a bit more strategy to playing it then the demo implied.

I am not sure if i am actually allowed to 'promote' a game here, apologies if i am not suppose to. A friend of mine named Brandon Osorio developed a game some years ago called Dark Refuge. I started playing it last year and it is the reason why i have started to enjoy P&P games. Before i would play occasionally but i never could get into most systems. I mainly want to know if anyone has heard about it and if anyone is interested in learning more about it. The website is www.Darkrefuge.net if anyone is interested. The game is designed to be simple to pick up but difficult to master (i am sure many games are promoted that way sorry if it is a generic promotion) Like many RPGs this game greatly encourages creative thinking and trying new things. Death in Dark Refuge is rather transitory so that one unlucky roll doesn't automatically mean that you have to give up on that character that you worked so hard on, however it doesn't mean that your character is immune from final death, it simply means that it is a bit more forgiving then other games. Low level leyas (magic) users are not crippled with memorizing spells or limited spells per day. I always hated in other games how i would make a mage type character and then after two quick skirmishes be out of spells and when the next fight comes all i am is a meat shield that can take 2 blows and then die as i attempt to defeat my enemies with harsh language. I am really bad at explaining these things but i would be happy to answer any questions. Personally i think the site does a really good job at explaining the stuff, especially in the FAQ section. I encourage everyone to read that section and if they have any questions about it i should be able to answer in full. Perhaps i am not the best one to advertise as i am not the best at explaining things but i really do love this game and i think that many others would too if they checked it out. I hope however that i have sparked enough curiosity that you will check out the site and then decide if you like what you see. Please feel free to ask questions as i am far better at explaining specific things rather then an overview.
