Remember kids. Feeding the troll only makes it bigger. Ignore function is there for a reason.

I absolutely hate the idea of subscriping to more than two streaming services. I have HBO Nordic and NetFlix and that's it. Some day I will have to get Amazon and Disney with how things are going. Add Spotify and ice-hockey and I've got 6 subsciptions. Maybe even 7 to 9 if I give Origin and/or Gamepass a go. I'm already using HumbleMonthly some months. That's a damn lot of money leaving my bank account automatically each month. Easy access is definately going away when it comes to movies and tv series. You can already see the results, piracy is climbing again and it's only going to get worse when everyone and their grandmother is opening their own service. I don't think it matters which company has the monopoly. When you are given such position, it is not the best outcome for the customers. Healthy environment would have about 2-3 platforms on PC where you can play games from, but purchasing could be done via different stores. Don't want to install Windows Store? Fine, log into the website, buy your game from there and redeem a key for Steam and play it on Steam. Valve doesn't get their 30% cut, but you are still able to play the game on Steam. But somehow I don't see these big companies thinking about what the customers want, they will do what they need to do the increase their income and our reliance on their ecosystems so they can promote their products.
-
No you don't. But guess what, Steam does take their cut from Paradox even if the purchase is done through Paradox's own store. The service isn't exactly free for Paradox even though they sell the key through their own store. Having their own store and platforms gives Microsoft a position to negotiate with Valve on the cuts Valve takes from selling Microsoft's games. Monopoly or even duopoly isn't exactly good thing either. No one wants to have 10 clients, but then again no one wants one company controlling the majority of the PC market. Even a game like Quantum Break came out on Steam. It's not like Microsoft is keeping their games completely off of Steam, that's EA. So far I haven't seen such decision making from Microsoft.
-
So far yes. Publishers are slowly waking up to it. Why give 30% of their hard earned money to Valve/GOG when they can have their own store. EA's Origin has gotten bigger since they first opened it. You can't get EA games on Steam any longer. Windows Store will get worked on according to Spencer. Ubisoft's store is still kinda half-***ed, but nevertheless even they have one. Smaller publishers naturally won't create their own storefronts, because a fractured marketplace could actually hurt them. With Steam/GOG they have huge part of PC market for themselves, if they put it on their own store that has drastically lower number of daily users they take a risk of people not even noticing that their game is out. And it's not like the steady flow of content will suddenly stop. Steam and GOG will still have ton of games on them, just not everything. Which in someways is a bad thing and it other ways a good thing. NetFlix is losing content to the movie studios / tv channels. They've seen this coming though and have developed pretty much every idea that has been pitched to them, to keep their customers. If you think about what NetFlix was when they originally started, and you look at it now the service has gone through a huge change.
-
Exactly. But since NetFlix and Valve are really the odd man out in the bunch, the powers that be will have their own stores/streaming services up. It's just not how the real life works, having everything under one roof.

1) Obsidian't doesn't have stock. More job openings already opened up. After all they are looking at being a 200+ staff company. 3) Kickstarter and FIG have lost their momentum anyways. I seriously doubt they would get anything close to 4 million dollars from either one of those ever again. 7) Quality of games on release? Isn't Obsidian one of the "famous" companies for releasing unfinishes games. Whether or not that reputation is fair, that's the reality. Isn't lootboxes more of a EA and Activision thing though? 8.) MS is looking at both PC gaming and XBOX gaming. Naturally Nintendo, Linux, Mac and Sony are out of the question. 9) As opposed to the very SJW culture already in both Pillars games? 10) Aren't half of their games already quite dumbed down games? If there isn't a viable market for something, games won't be made for such niche market. 11) Microsoft does mobile games? Obsidian already has done one themselves, as the only game they've fully funded by themselves. 12) Bethesda has said that they would never again hand out Fallout to an another developer. Fast fact: Obsidian has never worked with the same publisher more once (I don't count Paradox because PoE was half KS game). How many publishers are there left to work with? 14) How does this differ from the current situation? 15) Yes, Feargus will eventually leave. If Avellone's raging is even anywhere close to being truth. Is that a bad thing? It would depend on the replacement. New companies will be formed and new games will be made, that's the gaming business. 17) Seeing how Deadfire sold, that would have been the reality without MS. Now there's actually a slim chance of getting Pillars of Eternity 3. 18) Somehow I doubt that Microsoft would open Obsidian Entertainment studios in multiple locations. 19) The studio would not have lasted forever in any case. If the owners are actively looking to sell, they are quite ready for retirement sometime soon.

Yes, you don't owe them anything. Just like they don't owe you or me anything. I just don't get it, why people are always so quick to throw in the towel and renounce themselves from buying any games from a company. Before you've seen any actual proof of their new games being MMO-lites or bad shooters with a long ass plot. If this purchase had happened 5 years ago, I would be saddened as well. However with Gamepass MS needs games that aren't all the same shooter with different plot and setting. That's why I'm willing to wait it out and see what happens. Instead of crying all over the internet about corporate greed.
-
That's the thing. You don't know what kind of games Obsidian will make in the future. You are presuming and making assumptions. If WIndows Store actually gets better, is it really a bad option for Steam? Should Valve have the whole PC marketplace for themselves?
-
No offence, but idiots like you are the reason why companies that get bought often fail. No wonder studios get closed when they can't make any profit. When their loyal fans go and cry in the corner and stop buying the products,

The Outer Worlds trademark was registered under Obsidian Entertainment, not under Dark Rock Productions. If Microsoft had any interest in the PoE IP they bought it with the company.

You better take the deal when it's there. If they had tried to hold out a bit longer, would they have been able to find a publisher for their next game? How much money could they actually get through FIG/KS to fund PoE3 or some other game? I'm doubtful it would have been enough. Sure, they could have made smaller games, but that's not their strategy. I don't know why Feargus didn't do smaller games that have hit potential to get a steady revenue of funds coming in. What if they lost key personnel? That would make their value for MS lower. If Project Indiana isn't a hit, they value would once again be lower. With the sales of Deadfire not being as big as expected, it could have meant that would have had to downsize again. After building their company yet again up to 175+ staff members. That would a pretty heavy blow.

Private Division is still the publisher for Project Indiana. Got a source? This is awesome news if true. https://www.polygon.com/2018/11/10/17959500/obsidian-xbox-acquired-x018-new-vegas-pillars-eternity There you go.

Well your life must be a great success and a joyful ride if a sale of company makes in on the "worst mondays ever" list. Can we switch, my monday so far has sucked in every aspect.
-
Good thing The Outer Worlds is neither of those things. Also since Private Division is owned by Take Two, I'm sure that MS doesn't want to piss them off by acting greedy. They would be beyond retarded to piss off one of the major publishers. Oh, you've seen the deal they've made with Private Division? Obsidian's cut of the pie is for example the development costs that are being paid by Private Division. Anything MS gets from the sales is a big bonus for them, royalties or bonuses. They want to be able to promote Obsidian's first fully funded MS game with the text "From the makers of The Outer Worlds" instead of bringing up games from 10 years ago that most 15-20 year olds haven't even heard of. You must have heard about Gamepass. It's stupid think that now that MS is betting heavily on it that they would just kill off every studio that they've bought and immediately run out of games to put on it. Phil Spencer also has way more leverage inside the company and he seems like a guy who gets it. What comes to the scrapped project even Obsidian themselves have said that they were at fault as well. That they should have been more vocal about the issues, instead of just going with what the leadership of MS wanted back then (Don Mattick was it?). Yes MS has scrapped studios in the past. Sometimes for a solid reason, sometimes for a stupid reason. Nevertheless the people at MS have seen what Sony can do with their own studios. Those are some of the best games people can get on their console, that won't be available for the competition. MS didn't have that luxury for the most part of this console gen. When next gen consoles hit the stores they will have multiple studios making exclusives for their console and for GamePass. That's some huge motivation right there, to keep their studios open and making games.

To be fair, Kotor or Fallout wouldn't have happened. Kotor not in a million years, Fallout only if Bethesda ended up buying Obsidian.
-
Umm, what? Obsidian has created a total of 1 IP that you can speak of in the last 15 years. Pretty much all the rest have been sequels and pre existing IPs. Outer Worlds will be the 2nd one, but since nothing is known about it, too early to say anything.
-
Umm, what? You think they would first buy a developer then immediately after hurt the brand name they just paid millions of dollars for by releasing something rushed. Not to mention, you forget the fact that Microsoft gets a cut from every sale on XBOX + whatever Obsidian's cut is of the sales. They would be shooting themselves in the leg if they did that. If anything this means Project Indiana will have financial security from both Private Division as the publisher and MS as the owner of Obsidian and one of the platforms the game is coming out on. Unless Microsoft/Obsidian end up buying Tyranny IP, I doubt that there will be a Tyranny 2 by Obsidian. Don't think that IP is something they would choose to license for a game. Same goes for Vampire IP. Even though licensing it could be a possibility. I just don't see it as a realistic possibility though. Obviously Obsidian and Microsoft both want to work on IPs that they own, instead of creating value to someone elses IP/brand.

Well, go ahead and tell us how much each owner got if you can tell us that they are swimming in cash. You obviously don't understand the stress of owning and running a company of 150+ employees. They've done it for 15 years, with ups and downs. While Project Indiana is doing great, I guess? Deadfire sales were not what they expected. Without this deal would they have had to downsize again? It's easy for you run off your mouth over the internet when it's not you telling someone to pack their things and worrying how they will fare without the next paycheck you were supposed to pay them. I'm sure after 15 years the owners have deserved every dollar they get from this deal + the stress relieve of not worrying on how to pay the bills and wages when something doesn't go as they expected/hoped it would go.

1) They just opened up quite many new positions earlier this week prior to the announcement. So, yes. They are hiring.

It's not Dune. It's a new IP Cain&Boyarsky etc. have created. It's not Sawyer's historical game either. Sawyer is producing the game, he isn't the project director and the game has been in the making for few years already and Josh just got moved onto the project. And the project has a name Project Indiana. Obsidian has trademarked The Outer Worlds so the game is most likely going to be called that. I mean, this info basically screams a new, but familiar take on Fallout 1+2, perhaps a spiritual successor to those games, a bit like Pillars of Eternity vis-a-vis Baldur's Gate (no other comparisons intended). I'd hazard a guess and say that it will be party-based and isometric. They are using Unreal Engine for the game and I have vague memory of reading somewhere that it is actually an open world game. Which would make it more like Vampire:Bloodlines.
