  1. Smellicus's solution reminds of the early Ultima games where you could capture Lord British, keep him prisoner and torture him until you had unlimited heals.
  2. I'm with DaggerKnight. For different reasons, I tried to make a deal with and got trapped and couldn't get back to my ship. Not without a cheat code at least and I would rather die miserably a failure than die gallantly a cheat. so I say Death to the Royal Deadfire Company! Death to the RDC! And long may you dwell there. (I sound like the US military on a rant, I'm not, I'm just a sad ol sack who only has words left)
  3. Thanks omgFIREBALLS. I also took the job to break the oath and get to find the Floating Hangman. I want that ship. I'll find another way for that once I go back to a previous save game.
  4. I accepted the task of killing Queen Okenaza to get back to my ship, but the ways back were locked when I tried. I then killed everyone in the RDC but the paths back were still locked. I then killed everyone in the Kahanga Palace (no Queen there though, haven't killed her, can't find her). I've since killed everyone I can find across the whole of the island I can reach. I'm now reduced to standing outside Fleet HQ and killing passers by until the flagstones are no longer visible. I've become immensely rich and I don't want to go back to a save game. Does anyone know how I might get back to my ship?
  5. If you look at Tonga which has the strongest surviving Polynesian caste system it is a horrible place to be born. You can't change your social strata, your older brothers are expected to boss you around persistently your entire life. It is worse if you are born into the Ariki or elite classes which are *very* complicated, because you get less choice about wht you do in life than if you are born a peasant. The only real hope for any of them is to escape to an industrialised nation. Samoa which has a much lighter caste system is much more livable. That said, the Tongans do seem to like being Tongan so I guess it works for them.
  6. Thanks to Mr Hoot's post on the first page of this forum and a little practice I have now mastered ship to ship combat and win every fight. It isn't fun. Then I see that so many other people actually enjoy the ship to ship combat and I wonder WTB (what the Berath) is going on but I think I've worked it out. What Obsidian have done is what Sierra did in Space Quest a generation and a half ago and put a different type of game into the main game. It's a risky strategy and Sierra pulled it off (just) by making it funny, Obsidian have added an unpleasant aftertaste to a delicious game format. I go to play it and every time I think am I willing to put up with the grotty to get to the fun. So far it's about half and half - I go to play and either do or don't about half the time. Right now I'm praying for a decent sized island that can get me away from the ships for a while which is strange given that I have ten years Naval service and love boats and the sea.
  7. In POE they increased the level cap when they added the first expansion pack. I hope they do the same thing with POE2.
  8. A message for the designers. I found a Youtube video from one of the game reviewers that showed all the steps of a naval encounter, not the puppet version which I find too distracting, and I finally worked it out. We are back in 1988 mode when fluid graphics were too poorly supported to be viable. A naval chase and escape or cannonade or boarding was the most thrilling, chilling and adrenaline pumping of all military encounters except a cavalry charge and you destroyed it with the interface. This could and should be a highlight of the game and that needs fluid graphics using a flowing but pausable combat interface, much like the one that you've always used. You have totally missed an opportunity here. The complaint I made about the interface in the Beta feeling klunky and that klunkiness not going away doesn't apply to the actual game now that it has been released. It now feels invisible and I don't think about it at all, and yes I am willing to concede that it might be entirely inside my head. My other complaint was about the intrusiveness of the "between scenes" travelling. That is still intrusive and it feels more and more like 1992 every time it happens. I started working as a programmer in the mid 1970s and then we had to write our own games and we shared them around. My Lunar Lander became a competition into how fast any of the programmers could crash the lander into the Lunar surface. I can tell you with full honesty and full respect that your POE2 is a master work of the highest order, You have stood on the shoulders of giants and reached even higher. I am in awe of what you have made.
  9. Special thanks to Ethics Gradient. I realise that this is part of your job but you've done a terrific job jiggling us along when we got stuck, keeping a lid on some of the wilder speculations and I have had more fun than I can say searching for codes even though I never found any new ones. Thank you Ethics Gradient.
  10. Then you are fifteen hours ahead of the US and not four hours behind. Tomorrow has already come for them and we are living in it. If you make Tikawara with a double r then it becomes Tikawarra and could easily be a NSW name.
  11. "I see it all about 4 hours after America" I guess that puts you in Polynesia, those names should look comforting and familiar to you too Noctoi. Does Tikawara look familiar to you? It looks like a Ngai Tahu word to me which would make it Kingawara in Maori or Kikawala in Hawaiian but it's just nonsense to me either way.
  12. The game is being released at 3:00am where I live so they'll have had a few hours to sort out any problems. Not that I expect any. The final version of the Beta had no bugs that I ever noticed so I don't expect any problems like that and I've always found Steam to provide good service even though thousands of people trying to get the same game at the same time will be a challenge. What I have found with the Beta is that the player interface feels klunky after playing POE1 and that klunky feeling doesn't go away, and also travelling from one scene to the next isn't seamless as it was in POE1 and it interferes with the flow of the game. I'll be happy to wait a few hours after release before I get it. With any luck the actual game has addressed the worst of those things and the three expansion packs coming later in the year will be a chance to fine tune.
  13. Out of curiosity, why? The names Hawai'i, Savai'i (a place in Samoa) and Hawaiki (the ancestral origin of the NZ Maori) are all the same name and it is a name that resonates with dignitas and gravitas in Polynesia. It's hard to think of a suitable simile in Europe but Rome, Constantinople or Jerusalem all approach it one way or another. The Hawaiian people call themselves Kanaka Maoli (this would be Tangata Maori in NZ Maori) but they belong to and are of Hawai'i and only they can be Hawaiian in the same way that only people from the US can be American even though Canadians and Chileans are just as much American and of America as the US Americans are. Other Polynesians seem to feel this too. One time centuries ago a Tahitian king sailed to Hawai'i in his waka and discovered that the Hawaiians were lax and dissolute so he sailed back to Tahiti, assembled a fleet and an army and sailed back to Hawai'i, whipped them back into shape and then returned home to Tahiti. It isn't likely he would have done that with a different island chain. The name Hawaiki had and has real power.
  14. I grew up in Polynesia and all these Polynesian names are really nostalgic for me. I don't actually speak any Polynesian language but I do know what a mea'uli is, what a fakaleiti is, why the Hawaiians don't call themselves Maoli (when they clearly are to my eyes) and why the Maori in New Zealand stopped fighting (they hadn't lost). I even know the difference between Tu'i Manua and Tui Manu'a. Some of the names that the designers have chosen are very evocative. Kangati Islands means the Isles of People, Kua o Rekuhu Islands clearly means the Islands of the Misty Skies Wood. It is like Wizard of Earthsea but with comforting names from my childhood.
  15. I've only just noticed that my Deadfire package includes Cosmo the Spacepig who sounds a lot like the pig Cutthroat Cosmo that is the last of the scavenger goals.
  16. Given that the last codes are the hardest to get and that there are more for Cosmo than for any other extra I think it's safe to assume that Cosmo is more than just another pet, perhaps in the way that Concelhauts Skull was more than just another pet or more likely in some other way altogether. One thing's for sure, I'm going to go through the next update in minute detail looking for those last codes.
  17. Way off topic but I'll take the hit to get it off my chest. What am I supposed to do with my ship when it meets another ship? I don't seem to be able to ram mine into the other ship, I don't seem to be able to pull alongside to board it and I sure as Berath don't seem to be able to cross its T and sink it. I was hoping that it was a temporary kludge but it now seems that is certainly a feature. So just how do I get rid of or else take another ship. I am a sailor and son of a historian and none of the features make sense to me.
  18. Ten more codes to find, including those not yet released and those that have been overlooked. It only takes one missing code..., praise Berath that we got the sails second last and not last of all.
  19. I've been looking everywhere I can think of and I've found about half of the ones that others have already found and posted. I did notice that a lot of them were found in more than one place which is nice. A lot of graphic files on the Deadfire site have names that look like codes but I haven't been able to get any of them to work yet. It's kind of fun to scrounge around looking for likely suspects.
