We don't know if vader was serious about that offer though.

Well, what could vader do to restrain luke? Kill him? Make him turn from the dark? Get killed by palpatine at least 50 times (literally)?

According to EU, Vader never went full out on luke.

Are you sure he isn't for a good public school system? Maybe his public school isn't good. Also, his background isn't that far from the "common man", is it?
