  1. 'Tis true that the saving grace of the 'prequel' movies so far has been watching Palpatine pull the wool over the eyes of all the 'good guys' and watching him win the war even as they won the battles, IMHO. In the wake of all the Jar Jar silliness, it's largely what makes them watchable, even good :)

Master Vrook? I saw Master Vrook's hardline, uncompromising adherence to the Jedi teachings as causing him to teeter near the dark side himself -- but not actually hit it -- and KOTOR2 did a good job of keeping that running, as well as seeing one other character run a little closer to that line, and... :-" As to "more powerful"? Well, he wasn't a mover and shaker on the same scale as Kreia, or Palpatine in his era, so...

  2. There's nothing wrong with what ending there is -- just what ending there isn't. Lots of scenes got cut (there's a thread on it somewhere; a lot of the material can actually be found lurking around the installed files), so it ends on a rather odd and mysterious note with it not at all obvious what's really happened.

It's very well worth playing though and definitely better than KOTOR1, which had some fantastic moments but the story, whilst very good, was comparatively simplistic and had some seriously irritating bits.

As it stands it's a flawed classic rather than the masterpiece it could have been if they'd had time to polish it and finish up the ending as it appears to have been intended

  3. Having seen the amount of stuff that got cut from the ending, I say screw everything else, just patch the ending back together again!

The cut droid factory sequence can sensibly be moved to KOTOR3 if the rumours that Obsidian are now developing that are true, I reckon.

The bugs (apart from the couple of spelling mistakes) all look, to my programmer's (but admittedly not game programmer's) eyes, to be the sort of irritating annoying ones that would take a long time to track down, so since I didn't run into any game breakers I'll merrily say I'm not bothered about them

The only problem i came up with is the severe slowdown in different areas, when it slows down with loads of action is one thing, but when there is no action at all, it should be smooth-ish.

I had pretty much no slowdown except for one situation in Citadel Station where it kept glitching (then stopped doing so and ran fine again after a couple of minutes; maybe some NPC was stuck somewhere and the pathfinding code got itself into a thrash). Then again, I have a 6800GT card, so I think it's just that some of the effects are rather heavy on the GPU...

  5. I would say play... but then, I'm one of the "lucky" ones. Got the game yesterday and is somewhere trying to decide what to do on Telos right now. Not a bug so far (and it's not because my computer isn't busy doing other stuff in the background).

The game is awesome so far and I like the first 10 hours way better than the first 10 hours of Kotor :)

Generally it carries on like that :) There are some unfinished parts (gah, deadlines), but some (more) really superb parts. Then again I'm a chronic fanboy ;)

I didn't run into any real showstoppers -- a couple of CTDs, one point in Citadel Station everything slowed to a crawl (but mysteriously fixed itself a bit later), a couple of irritating situations with objects not activating (twiddling around kicked them into working). Oh except swoop racing didn't work properly. Swoop stuck to ceiling! :o

Haven't noticed any problems with influence so far.

Of course, most of the bugs seem to be intermittent issues and I suspect would be a real bummer to track down and fix, so combine that with the need for LucasArts to authorise it and everything and, well, not sure holding breath for a patch is a good idea, it might take a little while...

  6. ~returns to forums, finished KOTOR2 once and half way through with second character, risk of spoilage not too high now :) ~

Sheesh. I looked at this thread and wondered "will they still be quoting ages five pages later" and, er...

Do not underestimate the power of the arbitrary age-quoting thread

25 (just -- t'was a couple of days ago). And resolutely single FWIW "

  7. I have been completely baffeled why dark side characters, both in KotOR I and II, wear spandex suits while LS characters are in their skivvies.  Can anyone explain this to me??

    Confused,

    -Agadon

I was confused by this as well. Not that I'm in the habit of having my characters trail around in their undies or anything... ;)"

  8. The supplements are quite neat, though some of them do get a bit silly (usually the stuff for monks and clerics, seems to be... but maybe that's because I don't like monks or clerics?)

I did try building a "maximum-damage" power character at one point. He was a Swordwraith (from Monster Manual 2, IIRC), wielded a mercurial longsword , was an Exotic Weapon Master (Complete Warrior) and used one of the exotic weapon mastery benefits to do double his Str bonus when wielding it two-handed, and with a couple of well-chosen feats, at level 11 he had two attacks per round (at a decent AB) for an average damage of about 30 normally, or over 50 with Power Attack, and a maximum possible damage of 141 on a critical hit, IIRC

He was also usefully immune to lots of things (since he was undead) but had the disadvantage of only having about 60 hit points and really needed a special support character to heal him...

Never actually got round to playing that character in an adventure...

  9. I always found Firkraag tougher. The Shadow Dragon's breath only affected one character, for starters. Different playing styles I guess ;)

Back on topic: I'm going to go out on a limb and say that given the way the KOTOR series works, it sounds like Chris (as quoted) made the right call. But I won't really get to judge it until I get the game, of course...

  10. Complaints about the combat and game mechanics and so on are all well and good but the series just doesn't rely on that sort of thing -- it's all about the storyline and the roleplaying -- and so I'm going for "more dialogue choices".

Make it more Torment-ish. In a good way. Then I'd really be drooling. (w00t)

  11. I remember fighting Firkraag in BG2 was pretty damn nerve-wracking especially with circa 12th level characters...

The dragons in NWN were wussy by comparison. Well, the ones in SoU and HotU I mean. I've never got to Klauth (is it Klauth?) in the OC. The furthest I've managed to get in the OC before getting bored and irritated is mid chapter 3...

  12. When I was at school I used to get really bored so I liked hard challenging games and would stick to them when they were frustrating. Also having parents who don't buy you games very often tends to make you get the most out of the ones you have! I remember playing Zarch for long enough to cause it to get confused and crash (might be because I reached Wave 65 and the author didn't expect anyone to get past Wave 64 or indeed Wave 16 since IIRC that's where the game's levels looped anyway >_< )

These days though I have a job as a programmer so I spend all day doing hard stuff, so when I get home I want to unwind and frustrating games just frustrate me. So whilst I still like tough bits, the sort of game that doesn't offer much clue as to how to do it or just needs ages of reloading and/or practise nowadays I just give up on and play something else instead rather than sticking to it like I'd have done 10 years ago...

I dunno, must be growing old... :p
