Early impressions on 3 hours is that this is very much built on Risen 2 assets, gameplay, etc., though whether it ends up being better, same or worse will depend on how mid-level combat and quests across all islands pan out. It is definitely not a return to R1 / G1/2 'roots' as they claimed in the promos. I'm having fun, but then, I also enjoyed R2 despite its flaws.
  5. Downloaded, installed, saw the main menu, set the in-game options... then came to the office. But main menu is worst main menu I've seen in a while, 1/10 clearly game sucks etc.

  7. If they all came out at once - Skip DAI, focus on POE then WL2 in time left over. I suspect I'll check out DAI at the bargain bin if actual RPG fans turn out to like it.
  8. No such details at all. They themselves are unlikely to know - you can't really plan for an expansion concretely when the main game isn't done yet. We know they would prefer to do a meaty old fashioned expansion pack which is able to provide a lot of content and add new features to the gameplay, as opposed to just a DLC. I'd guess somewhere around $30 - lower and the backer discount becomes negligible, higher and it's too expensive for an expansion pack.

Piranha Bytes hasn't been the same since it lost early days members (and a lead designer to cancer, I think) but Risen 1 was excellent and 2 was fun if flawed. I have hopes that this one will at least be closer to Risen 1.
  11. I'm still not sure what you wanted to do with the pledges. I seem to remember you could add on new copies of WL2 or the like to an existing pledge, but maybe I remember wrongly. As for honesty, I agree, you are being honest. I'm not sure how that makes anything better, or how it makes you no worse than anybody else.

  13. Paradox games are a unique beast. It's got nothing to do with classic RTS or TBS games. It is also the greatest. Try it. Funnily enough, the Rule of Names continued for several more decades, IOANNESes generally screwing things up, until a 40-year reign of one stand-up ANDRONIKOS took the Empire past the point of no return (that point in every strategy game ever where you become too powerful to fear annihilation and are guaranteed to continue expanding slowly). Personal Union'd then inherited Venice in a stroke of luck, now stretching Imperium Romanum from Venice to Iconium. Funnily enough the key to long term success was making Byz into a trade empire using trade faction & policies (the mod adds factions & policies) and setting up a Persia-Constantinople-Venice gravy train of exotic imports.
  14. Fired up EU4 again with Veritas et Fortitudo overhaul that revamps ideas, techs, etc. and makes things a bit harder. Sadly I don't think there's anything in the style of Magna Mundi out there. Started Byz in 1344 when the Empire is basically splattered discontinuously over Greece, Constantinople, Nicaea and Smyrna. Historically this is when dude A fights a civil war in the name of a religious doctrine which preaches quiet and solitary inner life because that makes so much sense in a dude warring over an empire and then dude invites Serbian dude to help him out with the inner life so Serbian dude helps by taking most of the Balkans. It then follows that: ANDRONIKOS, becoming emprah by virtue of the game starting up when he's in the musical chair, rules wisely for over a decade and restores more bits of Byzantine territory across Greece and Asia Minor, mainly because other people win wars and give us our cores in what I assume is some kind of philanthropic territory donation for tax purposes. IOANNES gets uppity and eats up some little Turks for fun, Grand Turban ottoman gets apoplectic and invades with a million turbans, Ioannes dies on the battlefield presumably due to a serious case of regret Another IOANNES rises to the throne, brokers a peace deal to give away all the little Turkish bits to Grand Turban, comes home, gets murdered by his son immediately in a trenchant commentary on American politics today Yet another IOANNES then spends the entire truce period repaying loans accrued Finally someone called ANDRONIKOS returns to the throne and instantly makes everything better by ignoring the Grand Turban (who can't kill us anyway because dudes haven't learnt how to make boats to cross rivers), instead gloriously conquers / vassalises Serbia, Epirus and Crete. Then an IOANNES comes back, and immediately Bosnia (whose war against Serbia apparently hadn't finished when I vassalised) annexes Serbia, invades us with Grand Potato Hungary, and promptly forces us to liberate Epirus and Crete Success of empire now depends on the enforcement of the newest imperial decree to name every single human being in the realm Andronikos.

Bond with trenchmates and fend off the French in this PC game. Every choice matters. What is Fritz? Fritz is a narrative RPG with brutal real-time combat about life in the trenches of the First World War. You play as Fritz, a German soldier on the Western Front. Most of the gameplay is comprised of everyday activities like guard duty, getting food, and talking to your fellow soldiers. Attacks are sparse, but deadly and challenging. The main aspect of the game is character development, both of Fritz and of his comrades. Each of them is shaped by interaction with others and the things they're going through. Your comrades can die practically randomly during attacks, but the longer they survive, and they closer they get to Fritz, the better their chances of survival as everyone helps each other. Details of Gameplay Each playthrough of the game will last between 4-6 in-game weeks, with content for each game day. This time was chosen to reflect the amount of time a German soldier was expected to stay on the front before being sent back into reserves. At the end of that time there will be multiple endings available, completely dependent on how you play the game, and then you will be sent back to the main menu, where you can play a "new game" with your stats, skills, and experiences completely reset, or you can play "new game +" with the same stats, skills, and experiences, making the game progressively harder on each playthrough. Planned Main Gameplay Elements: Dialogue with fellow soldiers Daily routine (i.e. guard duty, mail, equipment maintenance, deliveries) Battles with the French Dynamic, random events that play out differently depending on the player's previous actions and affect stats for Fritz and NPCs. Planned Atmospheric Elements: Soldiers with personality and stats Branching dialogue options Interactive character development that takes the stats and relationships of NPCs into account Skill development based on learning from NPCs Fritz's thoughts change and flash on the screen with events and stats Inventory (can be used by the player, or as gifts or bribes) Stats for illness, trauma, hunger, loneliness Letters to and from home, with care packages that affect stats All of the above dynamically integrated and dependent on the situation and the player's actions. Multiple endings Base Goal The game will be playable on PC and Linux. We will be creating 10 major NPCs (with fully fleshed-out storylines of their own and complex interaction with Fritz), and you will get the opportunity to interact with 3 of them per playthrough. There will also be 25 minor NPCs (who interact minimally with Fritz), of which there will be about 10 per playthrough. For combat, the player will either be shooting in a desperate charge across the battlefield or in close combat in the trench. The player can control the character in cardinal directions (WASD) and stand, crouch, or lie down. The shooting mechanic will be basic---aim with a crosshair and fire---but accuracy will be a challenge, as Fritz's aim and speed will be influenced by his stats and health. The game will feature at least three different interactive settings: the trench, the battlefield, and the hospital. There will be at least 21 different endings. Funding goal: $15,000
  18. Protip: Leech is awesome. Most times when someone hits you you get splashed in blood. Some enemies try to put the bleeding debuff on you. Other cases you get puddles of blood you can walk over. It's a bit overpowered at the moment, but still fun.
  19. Lone Wolf and Glass Cannon are almost cheat abilities in how good they are. Basically like Gifted. And yeah, higher level spells will tend to give AP penalties, e.g. trying to cast fireball with level 1 fire. But level 1 in an element for utility spells like teleport is great. Electrification or whatever its called, the close range stunning basic air spell, is excellent - keep raising the mage's INT and you can use it to stun enemies for 3AP all the way to the endgame.

  21. Yeah, this is pretty damn useful. We're talking 8-10 backstabs in a single turn in terms of actual attacks. Just had a nice battle where my characdters just winked in and out of stealth charming, burning and backstabbing the enemy, who spent most of the battle wandering around in panic.
  22. Skill point spending scales up (1, 2, 3, 4, 5) which makes +1 to skill equipment particularly valuable. It also means that you won't be able to 'grandmaster' (5) more than two spell schools, usually. That's still more than enough - it's not like you need your mage to be able to cast every spell in the game. I'd say leave all spell schools at 1 and then level them up as you need depending on the spells you disocver and the spells you find you use often (tooltip for each spell will show when low skill level in that school is hamstringing your use). Pumping INT is important as it reduces spell cooldowns & increases their effectivity; get it to, say, 20 INT and you're casting most simple spells with no cooldown or only 1 turn.
  23. There are good crossbows around but I agree they're not really worthwhile - the AP cost is a real killer. Crossbows needed to have some special property, like piercing enemies in a line, to make them interesting. Anyway, yeah, I've just played a couple hours with my stealth duo and it's not an easy build to play. My point was less that it is awesome than it is viable, and I'm glad there's several viable characters to play. Crafting also gets fun once you get used to recipes and ingredients, though it is overwhelming at first. Worst part of the game has to be the retarded imp.
  24. Yeah, I don't plan on raising Madora's dex, but she does still carry a low level bow with maybe 6 or 7 dex requirement - which even then is only achieved through gear and no actual investment. Damage and accuracy is terrible compared to the thief's bow, but having it be a fire bow is handy if only to ignite explosions. I'm still dubious of the value of restealthing, since with all that considered, the only real possible advantage is being hidden during enemy movement (which with all the AoE ground effects going on will be far from guaranteed). And yes, I assume Guerilla and Backstab are meant to stack, but even then it's not worthwhile. A 6ap (4ap to restealth, 2ap to perform the actual attack) investment for a 4x damage attack is literally the same damage as just backstabbing twice for 2ap each time. P.S. My bow attacks cost 4ap. Are higher level weapons more ap to use? Being hidden during enemy movement is crucial for survival in late game, when more squishy characters (i.e. not fighters) can be ripped apart in two or three attacks. 5 Stealth Skill = 1AP to stealth. 3AP per stealth attack at 4x damage, as opposed to 2AP normal attack at 1x damage. (In both cases you attack twice with daggers, so that doesn't matter.) Sorry, but it's very clearly a ticket to damage heaven. At least, it is a viable build, though if you are struggling already at Normal then perhaps it wouldn't be optimal. Elemental magic is fun too and much easier to get mileage out of. Bows are 4AP, crossbows are 6 I think?
  25. Bow: I did this in my first game and found that the AP cost + the lack of damage from low Dex and low skill investment makes it not worthwhile. Unless you're, say, giving your fighter dex & bow skills, in which case, you're gimping the entire character. Which is fine if you want to do that, but then of course things will become harder. Sneak at 4AP is advantageous for a marksman for instance, because even with quickdraw a bow attack is 5AP. As for melee, the point is (1) restealthing at end of turn can make your guy invisible for the entire turn; (2) potentially meaning you don't need to waste AP repositioning for a backstab. Higher sneak levels narrows enemies' cone of vision and their awareness levels, which can be crucial for a successful sneak. Even for ranged characters, you're not always so far away from everybody that you can do it with impunity at level 0 and still be close enough for good THC. Edit: I don't know if they fixed this, but I think Guerilla & Backstab is also meant to stack. So, restealth and backstab = quadriple damage, and maybe it stacks with Bully, even? Time to find out.
