  1. ....was there anybody who actually liked party-based stealth? Terrible idea - individual stealth just makes more sense for scouting or really anything stealth related. Period. (IMO). I think most people simply accepted it would be changed as soon as Obsidian got a chance to change it. I don't think anybody actually wants it or likes it. At least I can't see why they would....anybody got a counter-argument for why its good?
  2. You are right, of course. You can choose to walk away from the bear, but not from other situations. Also, how do you know when you actually can take on the bear? Having your own bear, as a ranger, is quite the argument to attack anyway. More importantly, this is not about the personal agenda of the op or the people "hating" him. At least it shouldn't be. This should be about the game and how to help Obsidian make it even better. Even if the op turned out to be a non-likeable person, that doesn't mean his point was invalid. You make a valid point. And I agree that it would be nice to have the ability to retreat from undesirable situations. I may have actually been convinced to try Trial of Iron mode for my first playthrough and see how it goes (it sounds really cool actually ). But if the OP leads the discussion by coming off as a troll, it makes people initially react as if his opinion is invalid. Doesn't mean he was wrong, just means he can't necessarily expect a completely unbiased discussion and it makes it appear he's really not interested in improving the game and therefore limits how much constructive feedback he'll actually receive. Makes it look likes he's just p***ed off and wants to vent. Which is fine - just don't expect people to believe that he has the game's best interests at heart and is trying to improve the game constructively - it appears dishonest. At least, thats how it come across to me. But he has nothing to do with your point. I agree that it kinda sucks you can't retreat. I think it should at least be an option, and if the dev think its "cheap" or whatever (I've heard a few things about the devs, especially Sawyer, not liking how some people "cheat" the system, like with kiting for example, and try to do everything possible to prevent it and create a convoluted system to make that kind of "unacceptable" behavior not viable... still a great game though, devs get all my respect regardless), I think that's a little silly. Tactical retreating is normal. There should be situations were you can't retreat to a certain extent (planar sphere, captured by mind flayers, the Underdark, etc) but by removing the option entirely makes it have less impact. Part of the reason I like the planar sphere was because I was "trapped" - I could not escape and I had to find my way out, developing the plot nicely and creating a memorable quest/atmosphere. Similarly, when I got capture by mind flayers, if I could just up and leave, that would be rather silly. However, I remember running through that mind flayer area my first time and literally locking myself behind doors while I regrouped and figured out what the h*** I was going to do. Wasn't my proudest moment, but it was awesome. Or, another example would be walking into a room full of bandits and being like o s***! and running out of the room (probably what I'd do in real life lol so I thinks its reasonable to implement), probably locking the door behind me while I regroup. Should they be able to chase you? H*** yeah! that'd actually be really cool if you opened a door, entered a room, realized you were outnumbered, locked the door behind you, and then they started pouring out of other doors, following you (you know, like people actually would...). I'd like to see something like that implemented. It'd be really cool IMO. Should you be able to outrun them? Maybe. Should it be automatic and have no risk? Maybe not. I think alerting the enemy to your presence has risks that would be cool to see implemented (they will follow you - and might catch you; they are on high alert, making it harder to sneak; etc) Although, that could be harder to implement than one might think. Currently, you can't buff or activate (most?) abilities outside of combat. This means there has to be at least two states - in-combat and out-of-combat. So what would retreating fall under? Can you buff or use abilities while retreating? Which abilities can you can/can't use? Plus, how do you activate the retreat? Is it just a button where a "command" is issued telling your party members a retreat is in order? I'm probably over-complicating this. Definitely. Just make it so you can retreat during combat and its not a problem. Could probably just remove the line of code that says you can't leave an area while in combat. Then activate/deactivate combat accordingly (retreat = deactivates combat. When enemies follow after you and then target you, combat is activated again). Seems simple enough actually. Wonder why they didn't implement it in the first place....
  3. First off, don't act like you've been around forever - you've had what? 20 posts? thats contributing a lot to the "deep" discussions that you've been having, doesnt it? (I dont want to make this a competition - clearly I would lose, with only like 120 or so, so I haven't been around all that long either. but the way you phrased that just made you come off like a d***. Which I'm sure was your intent anyway, so...nice "deep" discussion right there.) Second, I think the OP was fine until he got to his 3rd post where he basically treated his opinion like fact and said BG is better. Period. Accept it. (not those exact words mind you, but essentially thats what he said.) He had a good point - it sucks his loading times were high (point 2, although I'm pretty sure thats a bug and will be fixed in the first patch, so its expected at release - wait for patches if you are going to complain about bugs). Yes, we all would've liked more companions - who wouldnt? But limited resources are what they are and they could only have 8. Does that make it a bad game? No. Should he have gotten harassed for his opinion - no. But theres no need to be so negative about an awesome game. Appreciate it for what it is - a throwback to the old days and hope for a better game in the future when Obsidian can provide more resources. If he wants to give constructive feedback, thats fine - but to just say o well I think BG is better so this is just trash is a bit....negative and unwelcome. Point 2 was bug-related and will probably be fixed, and point 1 was reasonable (maybe?) but couldn't be helped, but point 3 was just so subjective and opinion based and he stated it like fact. Of courses he's going to get retaliation. This is the internet. Quit pretending its brand new and that its unheard of for people to be harsh. But I'm just a "fanboi" so...my opinion is worth less than yours anyway so feel free to ignore it. But I'll continue to say this is all just my opinion, so don't take it as fact or anything.
  4. 1) None of them are unwinnable if you come back later when you're of the right level. I took out both Raedric (with smart positioning and use of bouncing AoE spells) and Wymund (attrition and foe AoE). 2) Why would you expect this to not be a thing? Fear the Fog of War. Fear it! 3) I took out both of those problems in one battle with no need to reload. It wasn't even all that hard. Wymund was harder. 4) There are no "wrong" answers, just different results. Sometimes you choices have consequences you don't like. That's called a good RPG. 1) You cannot come back when you play trial of iron. 2) I can expect it, but if im unlucky, I have to start the game from the beginning. 3) This is not about difficulty, but about being able to assess a situation before commiting to a fight. 4) Consequences that should be forseeable to a degree, especially if hours and hours of progress depend on them. Here's a question: If you are going Trial of Iron mode, shouldn't you naturally be more cautious? I mean, if I walk into a bandit camp, I can expect to get attacked and will probably die if I am soloing it unless I know exactly the layout of my enemies. So, naturally, i might stealth my way into the camp, figure out their numbers and then determine if its a winnable fight. So I mean, I'd say invest heavily in stealth for the future so you can avoid similar situations. I mean, what if there had been a dragon in there? You'd be f***ed no matter what (how do you fight a dragon on Trial of Iron mode? That's got to be crazy hard....). I mean, unless you can't leave after spotting the bear? but it looks like from the video above, he could see the bear before combat started, and it didnt start until he targeted the bear and actually attacked it (I am assuming because the bear hadn't detected him yet). So I'd say invest a lot in stealth. Although, I'd have to say, I don't think itd be bad to implement running away and breaking out of combat - you could do that in BG, and the enemies would even follow you (to some extent). So I dont think the OP was actually being unreasonable to ask the question....However he could've phrased it better. If he had stopped there, he probably would've been fine. Instead, he was just blatantly acting like a troll and was treated as such. Also, if you just started the game, maybe Trial of Iron isnt the best option if you don't want to die....just sayin' - its hard. I don't think I'd do it for my first run....
  5. hey guys, remember when a game let you write your own custom scripts oh wait that was Baldur's Gate and it was like 20 years ago You could write custom scripts? I know you could chose from some default scripts in the Baldurs Gate games, but those werent great in my opinion, especially for spell users. Basically it was useful for auto attacks and stuff (so Fighters/Rangers/Barbarians/etc maybe Rogues?) but was terrible for spell-users (Wizards/Druids/Priests). Sure it allowed me to automatically use my healing spells on wounded party members, but that just made me rest more often (like after every fight lol) and I generally just stayed away from scripts as a whole because I found them useless. But you're telling me you can create your own scripts somehow? I mean, I know mods and stuff that did that, but I didn't think it was a feature....(and I didn't think even the modded ones were that useful - I found my own tactics much better than any AIs...). You couldn't set up options and conditions like in DA, could you? Or did you like have to mod it in or something? Never really worried about scripts or bothered to look into them, personally, as I found they were just not that good, and I don't think I'd miss them if they hadn't been included (and wont miss them in PoE).
  6. Okay, so if I am willing to go below 50% Endurance and accept that its going to happen, its fine? I was thinking a Nature Godlike Barbarian and combining the stat increase with Blooded. Sure, maybe a Fire Godlike might be better (and I plan to make a Fire Godlike Barbarian too at some point), but I just thought I'd try it out. Also, if its really that extreme where you either don't get hurt or you are already dead at 50% Endurance anyway, that's a bit ridiculous to me and needs to be tweaked. Although I guess what people are saying is that racial abilities arent everything to a class and that it shouldnt be built around those abilities? I dont know - I like the idea of the Nature Godlike Barbarian - He rages in combat and after he takes a certain amount of damage, his rage deepens, increasing his attributes accordingly as his body tries to protect itself. Kinda like an automatic berserk mode. Probably still going to play it, just wondering how it'll turn out and how useful/effective these racial abilities actually are.
  7. I apologize but I found my response to be much bigger than I intended so I put it in a spoiler tag so it doesnt have to take up a huge screen for everyone. Thanks in advance if you decide to bare with me and read it.
  8. Yeah, I'd agree, generally it took a short amount a time to adjust and realize what does what (as it does for all games). Then its pretty much no brainer. Sure you could probably make it do some complicated stuff (maybe?) and that'd be cool I guess... It would be cool to just sit back and watch everything in real time, but considering if your playing your main character anyway, doesn't that just make it pretty much WoW with companions....?
  9. So according to the wiki Nature Godlike get a boost to Might (+3), Constitution (+2), and Dexterity (+2) when below 50% Endurance. So here's the overall bonuses from that: +3 Might +9% Damage +9% Healing +6 Fortitude +2 Constitution +6% Health +6% Endurance +4 Fortitude +2 Dexterity +6% Action Speed +4 Reflex Resulting in a total boost of +9% Damage +9% Healing +6% Health +6% Endurance +6% Action Speed +10 Fortitude +4 Reflex Are these bonuses just so small that they render the ability useless? I would think that a 7-point boost to attributes would have more of an effect than that...Are they really that terrible?
  10. Okay, cool, thanks for the info. I'll keep that in mind when I'm building classes. I mean, its a low-level campaign so I'm not expecting the OP that was the Kensai/Mage, and as a Wizard, i understand low-levels are NOT for melee-mages, just wondering if it was viable later in the game. Haven't really sat down and examined the Wizard spells yet, so wasn't sure if they had the spell capability for that or not. Thanks for being helpful!
  11. Yo that stuff looks great! Why was I wasting my time with Goosebumps? Lol. Man, I should've been born like 10 years earlier or something. By the time I'd heard of D&D nobody really played P&P (at least nobody I knew that was my age) so I kinda missed out. Granted, it could've been much worse; I could've been born after 2000 where everyone needs their WoW and CoD fix and RPGs are old and outdated... thank god for the older generation who saved money and backed this project! Honestly thought this stuff had died out after BG2 (sure there's Dragon Age and others, but its not the same...)
  12. Than i prefer D&D encumbrance ruleset, where the simulation is taken into account. Every fantasy game, virtual or table game, should include as much as possible simulation aspects. When you play Dungeon and Dragons or Pathfinder, your party hardly carries a big coffer everywhere, at most each member has his own bag. For istance, why do they put the need of resting? Isn't it a simulation of a real aspect? Yeah but this isn't D&D! And if you are going to simulate encumbrance, why even have an inventory system? As @hatred mentioned, you'd be able to carry what? 1 or two weapons tops? plus armor and stuff? Have you tried hiking around with a 100 lbs in a pack? That gets real heavy, real fast. So yeah, you could have a bag, with what? some food and potions, maybe some cash and small-scale loot? Certainly you wouldn't be carrying more weapons than you need and you certainly wouldn't want anything bulky or anything like that. Yeah this sounds like a cool gameplay concept (and Im sure theres some awesome simulator games that do this type of thing) but for implementation its just impractical and not inline with the IE gameplay. Sure, itd be cool if they added (or someone modded it in) a simulator version/option/toggle/etc that greatly limited inventory and carry capacity and required food and water and sleep, etc. I'd play it, but its not what these games are about. But if you want to mod it - go for it! I'd gladly play PoE:PotD Survival Sim and that'd be pretty cool - but I wouldn't want to force others into that kind of game when it is so different from the IE experience.
  13. To be fair, someone iss going to be butthurt regardless of what choice they make. Face it, Obsidian's choice is which downside they want, not what choice has an upside. Well, I agree, but they could do something like release an official patch (even if its the same as the fan-made one) that makes it optional to remove that specific joke. Seems a bit much for one single joke though tbh....but if its going to ruin someones gaming experience to leave it in.... (and before someone says "if its so insignificant, why not remove it?" Fact is, I like the joke and would be sad to see it removed. Not because of censorship; not because I don't like transpeople; I just think its funny and fits the setting, plus its backer content. And I think that last one might even be the most important - without these people, the game wouldn't exist. Period. If you don't like it, fine don't play the game, your loss. Or better - just don't read it or take it for what it is: a joke (offensive or not) that has no tie to the main story, no significance at all, and is absolutely pointless to get angry over.) (I also don't see how its about transpeople - sure you could interpret it be so, but thats kind of like saying you think your interpretation is more valid just because you got more offended over it - and thats just stupid IMO)
  14. My character is a ranger with a bear companion. I basically assumed the enemy bear would be two to three times as strong as my own bear just to be safe. Unfortunately it turns out the enemy bear adhered to a different law of physics and killed my own bear and myself in a cheap single blow. It's my own fault for trying to role play in a role playing game. As always meta gaming is key. So, you're role playing. Allow me to put this to you: After all that, you decide to frolic merrily into same really dark cave rather than b-line to the nearest inn to quaff an ail, feel up a wench, and see if you can find somebody to help you with this what's been going on. Fair enough. Free will and all that. Unfortunately, there is no correlation between free will and intelligence. Maybe you should think about making better life choices. Good luck. Live and learn. Reminds me of those old "choose your story" Goosebumps books. Did you have free choice? sure, you could choose whatever you want. Did you die if you chose wrongly? All the freaking time. D*** those books got frustrating! But they were still cool cuz you got to pick your story and stuff. Doesn't mean you can't chose wrong though. lol
  15. Oh! I guess I just imagined the blood war feud between Yxonnemai and Belhifet. The influence of Crenshinibon. The Drow betrayal of the Elven and Dwarven alliance, and the failed Mythal at the Severed Hand. The Barbarian tribes duped into trying to start a war with the 10 towns, by a dragon who successfully preserved her soul and channeled it into a revered, long dead Barbarian hero of Forgotten Realms lore. A cowardly king who betrayed Helm's chosen and the tortured-to-undeath Bard who witnessed this betrayal then invoked a Curse on the King's castle and subjects. Icewind Dale had a better written (and delivered) Story than Both Baldurs Gates. The people who say otherwise are the same simple-minded demographic that Bioware attracts with their gimmicky, teenage, beat-you-over-the-head-with it narrative style. I liked Icewind Dale 1/2 but honestly don't have a good handle of the plot. In fact, I can't really recall many of the details. Although thats probably more because I think I only actually finished them once each. Enjoyed them a lot, but personally I found the companions to be a bigger draw for BG2. Although I really should replay the Icewind Dale games - its been a LONG time and I think I might've played them when I was too young or something because the plot is actually really cool and deep and I somehow missed that completely... Loved the feel of the Icewind Dale games though - the environment and atmosphere was great - one of the best games I've played - but idk, BG2 just had something that made IWD feel like it was lacking a little. Definitely got to replay them though - I think I stopped playing because I've always had trouble getting the IE games to work on my computers and between the two, I usually chose to devote more time in getting BG2 to work.... Gotta say, you know you love a game when you're willing to uninstall and reinstall it a billion times trying to get it to work on a new computer, or even switching computers simply because you can't play the IE games on it.... Honestly, PoE has just got me feeling real nostalgic and thats awesome!
  16. Yeah! Those guys were the best! They got completely destroyed and then they ""reloaded" and were like "lets try this again - can we join you? No? Is there anything you need from us? Please, let us prove our worth by doing a menial fetch quest!" Not those exact words, but still. And then they returned with the pantaloons? Funny how I still remember that.... That was great. I was laughing so hard throughout the whole thing. and the floating eyeballs were a nice touch too.
  17. Just think of it like you're the main character of Wanted and you can make bullets curve and whatnot. Everybody is actually a trained assassin and has had extensive training with all types of weaponry, regardless of backgroud. but seriously, what @Katarack said is enough for me, personally.
  18. "Me and my wizard self, so badass. Spells and ****. I'm gonna go kill this bear! I don't care if I've got no armor and about 10 hitpoints, I'm the PC and I'm a badass!" *mauls* *screams* *dies* "This game is to hard! It sucks!" I remember a 1st level AD&D party once nearly destroyed a badger... you'd think people would learn! (I saw the bear and ran a mile, as I may have said!) Anybody remember that noob party of adventurers that broke into a mage's lair, got attacked by floating eyeballs, and ended up as petrified statues? (Abazigail's lair in ToB, I believe). Then they end up stealing the wizard's pantaloons or something? For some reason, this conversation made me recall that....
  19. Its funny. I find that makes a lot of sense, but the BG games were actually my introduction to the Forgotten Realms. This was followed by Pool of Radiance: Ruins of Myth Drannor (the book), the Baldurs Gate books, the Drizzt books, the Icewind Dale Games, the Dark Alliance console games (wouldve been OK but to use the Baldur's Gate name like that...they were completely unrelated - except that it took place in the city of "Baldur's Gate", supposedly), the Sellswords books, and finally and recently Planescape: Torment, which I somehow overlooked and enjoyed immensely. I'm sure there's others I can't think of, but those are the ones that come to mind. Plus, I never had any DnD experience with PnP or anything like that (something I still want to try but can't find enough people to do it!). So its interesting to me, as BG was my entry to the Forgotten Realms, while for others it seems to remind them and connect everything that they loved about the universe. At least, thats my interpretation of your words
  20. Yeah that kind of thing is actually fairly common, I think, or at least not unheard of. Or like a blood and gore toggle - I've seen that before (of course I just leave the gore on but thats just me ) Although, given how much extra animations and graphics that might (?) have taken, they probably considered it not worth it, especially considering the setting of the game and its grim and dark nature. There is a toggle for gibs in the options menu, though. You can turn off the spray of blood and gore on death if you feel like it. Oops. Didnt know that. Either way, won't be using it though, since that stuff doesnt bother me one bit
  21. ...So what happens when you get hungry? (Or your character gets hungry - doesnt he need to eat too?) Or you're clicking your mouse? Wouldn't these things break your immersion too? Honestly sounds like everything breaks your immersion.... Its called suspension of disbelief. Yeah, NPCs doing their own things and having routines and stuff is cool, but rarely implemented and this game apparently didn't have the budget for that so....(or they just didn't think it was a priority). Also with the whole might thing - if you want to roleplay a character with high magic ability and low strength, why cant you? Just roleplay it, pretend, whatever. Sure, the game will still give you the OPTION to be the physically strong person, but if you don't choose those options, arent you effectively avoiding demonstrating those physical powers? Just because theoretically, according to some numbers on a screen, your character COULD lift that 100 lb rock, if you dont roleplay hiim to be able to do that (and chose to avoid such options due to his "weak" physical strength) wouldnt that be a much more effective way of depicting him as a "weak" character? Maybe I just don't understand the whole RP thing.... Although, I'd agree. Personally I think itd have been better to split the stats and make them a bit more intuitive, but I don't really mind too much. I dont really worry about immersion or roleplaying so lucky me I guess. *Edit: Sorry, that first part mightve come off harsher than I intended, I've had a long night - its like 5:30am here, so I think I'm gonna go to sleep now.
  22. As a player who played EE versions of BG series and IWD just recently I can tell you it's not nostalgia, they're just that bloody good and worthy of occasional replays. Still not sure about PoE replayability though. Gotta say, wasn't impressed with the "EE" of the BG games. Just didnt think they were worth it, honestly. I liked Dorn though - thought he was awesome, Neera reminded me too much of Aerie (whiny and I dislike Wild Mages), and Raasad was eh...Although I actually did like the Black Pit - that would actually be great for trying out various build for PoE.... Didn't buy BG2EE though, just because I didn't think the new companions were worth it, although it wouldve been nice to actually have an evil thief (and have a full evil party of NPCs for once...). Just sucked they had so many liimitations and what not, just figured I'd save my money for this or Torment:Tides of Numenera.
  23. Is that a LBGT joke!!one211!??@! Isnt that the line Silke (the woman whos with Garrick in BG1) uses when she first talks to you? Thats what i thought it was referring to...funny who I still remember that line to this day (IIRC, could be wrong of course) *Edit: Yup found it: "Greetings mercenaries, I am Silke, thespian extraordinaire"
