  1. I tend to accept "because it sounded cool" explanations more readily than literary ones and I therefore would expect "Revan" to have been chosen because it sounded like any number of scary or otherwise magical/mythological concepts and words, like revenge, riven, revenant, reverent, etc. But seeing as the franchise does have a penchant for shallow (i.e., we're not dealing with any sort of profound theological allegory here) Judeo-Christian mythological references, accepting Sion as meaning...well, exactly what it says, Sion, seems to make sense. That is to say, meaning Sion of "Mount Sion" or "The Priory of Sion," or what have you. Alternate spelling (though well attested) for Zion (i.e., Israel and/or the Temple Mount). As for Malak being Moloch (I assume that's what people are getting at with the suggestion of a Hebrew meaning)...well, it seems like a bit of a reach. Moloch is famous for being one of the devils in Milton's Paradise Lost, but it's not clear really what "Moloch" is in the Old Testament. It would be a fairly obscure reference, and I tend to think the "because it sounded cool" explanation fits this one better than a vague similarity to an obscure biblical hebrew name of uncertain meaning.
  2. Yeah, I had to play through the first half of the game with no movies, as every movie crashed the game, if not the system. Then half way through the game, they started not crashing my system anymore, once I decided to underclock my ATI 9700 Pro to improve stability, and it provided sufficient stability to play movies. Kind of sad, that I need to underclock my video card to play, though. For some reason, all my other 3D games, some of which have more demanding engines, run stably. KotOR 2 only runs stably underclocked.
  3. plz...delete post...serves no useful purpose...ugh

  5. Indeed, just having people congratulate you on being swoop champ, or that kind of thing, is rather gratifying. And I find being thanked or recognised for good or great deeds to be the most 'empowering' experience of all. People seek achievement in different forms. Overwhelming greatness can be constituted in good or constructive deeds just as easily as evil or destructive deeds. I think that fame is the finest manifestation of power in an RPG. It's coming back from the campaign, and being lauded, that's the real glory. Its stories being told of you after your death. And when those stories are told, some will want to be remembered as Jesus Christ, while others are happy to be Herod (he's called Herod the Great for a reason, after all), if I may draw on that scenario.
  6. What I don't understand is why one would expect Torn to be anything like Lionheart. Lionheart was developed by a comparatively inexperienced developer with no good RPGs to their name, not by Black Isle, not by Bioware. Just published by BI/Interplay. Torn was the opposite of Lionheart: an in-house Black Isle title like PS:T.
  7. *shock* Your character in the first game is actually Revan?! OMG Spoiler! ... I know, I know, kidding. In other shocking top-secret spoiler news, Aeris dies. And Vader is Luke's father. Okay, but seriously, Light Side Male. And I played Light Side Male my first time here, too. Next time, I might play Light Side Female, since I haven't played a female RPG character in...ever, and I'd like to see the male flirts/romance bits.
  8. Indeed, if they are using the force in their production process, allowing the strength of their wants and desires to overpower them can only lead to the dark side.
  9. Yeah, and floppies aren't the worst of it. My original Tunnels of Doom data tape (yes, casette tape) seems to have corrupted itself. And to think the bloody thing's only 22 years old. They don't make data storage like they...oh...wait...
  10. I also prefer BG1, and have played both repeatedly, including expansions. For one thing, I prefer low-level play to the silly buff/debuff/see-who-casts-timestop-first high-level nonsense of BG2/ToB, and for another, I like the open-ended feel of the first.
  11. Yeah, I experienced this. Except I didn't get the dialogue between Atris and the handmaidens, due to the dialogue-skipping bug. Ah, joy.
  12. So there are a lot of fans of Black Isle's games here, for fairly obvious reasons. Being a huge fan of PS:T, it pains me that the game has been out of distribution for a long time now, and that it failed to get what additional recognition it might have gotten, had its publisher and developer survived longer, or had they been able to properly publicise it during and after its release. I'm sick of seeing, on PS:T boards, "where can I buy this game?" followed by the response "you can't" or "spend a week checking your nearest fifty electronics shop bargain bins: you've got a one in ten chance you might get lucky." Of course, it can be purchased on Ebay, but this doesn't seem to be a popular option for most gamers, for whatever reason. Is it indeed the case that Interplay still exists as some sort of post-bankruptcy zombie husk holding onto certain assets, on the brink of technical rather than merely de facto oblivion? The distinction between PS:T being literally abandonware, and PS:T being held (along with the rights to the Planescape license for the purposes of the title, otherwise possessed by WotC) by some merely titular remnant of Interplay which retains control over certain properties would seem absolutely crucial. A lot of old games have seen some sort of redistribution in recent days, from measures as obvious as NES titles moving to GBA, to remakes as strange as Age of Empires for Pocket PC. And I won't accept the answer that there isn't a large enough audience. Even Infocom's text adventures have gotten rereleased repeatedly over the years, and I have to think the audience for PS:T is larger than the audience for Leather Goddesses of Phobos or Zork. Given the fame PS:T has in the RPG community, it's quite frustrating that it lingers in legal limbo, if indeed it does, with no potential for redistribution in any form, but without passage to the status of abandonware either. I'd far, far rather a living, functioning publisher owned it, but does anything own it at present? What is the status of Interplay's properties?
  13. I'll just name my top two: Zelda II: I'm a big fan - very underrated game, which got less credit than it deserved for doing something new and adventurous instead of rehashing the same formula. Better RPG elements, larger and more complex gameworld, and incredible music. Metroid: The sheer platforming fun of this game, for me, is virtually unparalleled. Some people prefer Super Metroid, but I prefer the original, for a few reasons: crisper, more clearly defined animations and none of those cheesy, grainy explosions every time you kill an enemy.
  14. If it's even possible to do this mod, I'm pretty sure that, regardless, it's not going to be possible to do it well.
  15. It's a double-edged sword. The PC version started off buggier, and will end up with fewer bugs in the end, than the Xbox version.
  16. Nuts to you! *falls asleep* *snores loudly* <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Damn, man, a 205KB avatar and pink 600x100 sig? I'm all for attractive sigs and avs, but we're trying to browse a forum here, not watch a movie.
  17. Clearly, like Yuthura in KotOR 1, the Sith are hanging around in bars seducing barflies into joining the Sith. In this case, all they need is the energies of Malachor V to let the forces of darkness take hold!
  18. Give this man a medal! <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Or a girlfriend " <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Look closer. He's clearly pointing to her. ^_^ <{POST_SNAPBACK}> LOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOL p.s LOL!!! Yes, she's a fast girl. What with her 300 baud modem. Aww, yeah.
  19. Haven't heard about that one before... :"> Care to tell a little bit more about it, what type of game etc. ? Anyway, my own favourites (limited to games from the last 10 years, otherwise it just gets too long): Fallout 1&2 Baldurs Gate 2 Icewind Dale 1&2 (and expansions) Carmageddon (&^%$# 3Dfx Glide only for 3d support) Tombraider (even more &^%$# 3Dfx Glide only for 3d support) Planescape: Torment Jagged Alliance 2 Battlefields 1942 (and expansions) Master of Orion 2 Heroes of Might & Magic III (and expansions) Kotor 1&2 Disciples II Not necessarily in that order Edit: Honorable mention because of the sheer amount of time spent playing: UT2004, VMBL and Pirates! <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Wow, I must say, I'm interested to see someone including Icewind Dale, and perhaps pleased to see it given some recognition. A little-appreciated title indeed. I'm afraid that, for me, playing it after Planescape: Torment, the classic D&D gameplay that served to inspire me in Baldur's Gate just wasn't enough anymore, even with me being a former pen and paper 2E AD&D gamer.
  20. A poll that asks for a date range but remains open for a series of dates subsequent to its posting is a perverse statistical muddle indeed
  21. Groovy
  22. Very, very much an RPG fan rather than a Star Wars fan. I've played the pen and paper D6 Star Wars RPG, and most of the Star Wars computer games over the years, but I'm certainly no fanboy. Beyond thinking Phantom Menace was terrible and not bothering to see Attack of the Clones, I think that the original movies are really only mediocre overall. But I didn't watch them as a child, so I have no nostalgia to fall back on. It seems to me, in the original trilogy, the writing and dialogue range from satisfactory to poor, the acting is anywhere from tolerable to terrible, and the special effects have ceased to suffice to make the movie stand out in the present day. Heck, even the cinematography's fairly unimaginative. Only the sound stands out, and that only manages to make the original trilogy the equal of the better hollywood blockbusters of the last 10 years in sound direction, by no means their better. In the history of cinema, I don't think any of the Star Wars movies deserve any sort of place of honour. They put elements of Western and Fantasy in space in a full feature film. That's historically notable, but it doesn't make them great films, in any other terms.
  23. Yeah, unless you use any of the armours which allow use of force powers but negate the Wisdom defense bonus. I very seldom pay attention to my Wisdom defense bonus, as most of the time, I'm using armour which permits force power usage but removes the wisdom bonus to defense.
