I miss the freaks

After all she's a godess, not a woman. She promised nothing. Isn't that a normal thing for religious freaks? Sacrificing yourself for your god? -

Apart from the fact, that I think you take that sex thing too literally, that is a very convincing interpretation. It brings me to two questions: 1. Why do I still kinda like this guy? and 2. Why do I have a fable for impotent characters? Video gaming as psychoanalysis... I should change the topic of this thread. I miss impotent characters. -
I think some of the stories of the backer NPCs where quite good. The problem was, they where all over the place and almost always where godlikes. What if every donator could write a very small pirate story (I mean very short. Basically just anecdotes, jokes or piraty poems) and on the island there is this old pirate telling those stories if you speak to him?

Since BG the only games I played were Pillars and Tyranny, so I don't know nothing about Dragon Age or any other game. But you shurely can't complain about Pillars being not feminist enough. There is no total equality in the sense of women and men always doing the same things and having the same roles, but they created believable societies in which women inhabit important roles and there is nothing that prevents women to be whatever they want. We have female knights, female leaders, female whatever. There are even two societies in which the roles of women and men are totally interchangable. Pillars 1 just takes place in the more medieval part of the world, so I think they didn't want to go too far here (But even here, we have the ogres, which have a matriarchy.), but I think in Part 2 we will see even more leading women. While reading the updates for PoE2 I even get the impression that they go a similar route as in Tyranny: The land belongs to the men, the sea belongs to women (Which I think is a very cool idea). At least two different women are mentioned that inhabit the role of a ship's captain, if I remember correctly. Regarding the balance thing: Yes there were more male than female characters in Pillars of Eternity. But that decision seemed to be made out of creative reasons. As far as I understood, Durance originally should have been a woman (I forgot her name, but the artwork looked nice). I think, it just didn't fit the character anymore. And then there was Callisca. I admit that she was no real replacement for the planned female priest character, but she was cool. In Pillars 2 we'll get a lot more women, as it seems. And the only reason, why there is one more men, is that they took Eder and Aloth from part 1. And don't tell me, women don't like those two. Maybe we'll even get an 8th companion, which is a women. I don't care which gender, as long as it's a ****ed up weirdo. The reason why I write this is, that I think the PoE-Team tried to make women an important part of the world, while maintaining a historically believable world. That is not easy and I think they did good so far. In my opinion, it is a little bit unfair, to complain about it. -

I hate it when content has no relevance in the real world. Be it computer games, movies or whatever. If it does not reflect the real wordl, it has no purpose other than distraction. I make an exception when it comes to humor (Jan for example has nothing to say, but he's just hilarious), but I'm not interested in the fictional problems of fictional characters. If I wanted to hear people whining about their lifes and problems without relevance, I don't have to play games. I just notice, as I write those lines, that people said the same things, about characters that i like. This topic very much depends on personal preference... So the problem is see is: I fear this game develops in a way, that does not fit my preferences anymore, as everything I liked about part 1 is seemingly about to get cut in part 2. One could argue, that this is my personal problem, but part 1 managed to satisfy everyone, while part 2 seems to go in another direction. Excuse me, I'm drunk. Have a very good night. -

I just noticed that this discussion has developed into two different directions. The asshat discussionand the freak discussion. I just defended Durance as a character and an "asshat". That does not mean, that you have to be a freak to be interesting. And it also does not mean that freaks have to be bad persons. Think of Jan. The so called "sidekicks" seem to be interesting. We'll see. The only question that appears to have some sort of relevenca beyond this computer game is the first one. The other ones are just a little bit interesting if you belived in rebirth. But if you did, you probably already asked yourself that questions. @Varana: You're probably right. Especially regarding the point that in a way all BG characters where comic/cliche, just because they had to. I had the same thought after my last post. -

I just realized, that in my current playthrough I chose a woman, which I intended to import to PoE2, which has romances. Great choice. I totally want to romance Aloth or Eder. Suddenly the LGBT-discussion becomes somehow relevant to me. -

Such a definition, of course, would be perfectly valid. Quote That he has the above mentioned attributes does not mean he does not have the other ones too. He is compassionate. No question: He is an asshat. But the more interesting questions are: Is he just an asshat? Why is he an asshatWhy does he behave like that and what does he think, he can accomplish with his behaviour? Which leads to questions none of the above posters want to be confronted with: Is the guy at work really an asshat? Is that christian witch that preaches her old testament "you should burn in hell" bullsheet really an asshat? Is the grumpy old fucc in the cafe at the railway station that tells you his nazi stories really an asshat? Why are those people the way they are? What made them? Those are questions most people simply dont want to ask. (And I dont even think, Durance is really like those people. He questions himself, he is compassionate. If he wasn't the events during the work couldn't have touched him the way they did. Now he wants a change, a new direction. But be honest: There is no possibility of this to happen. It's not his fault.) At the moment, I'm starting a new playthrough. This time I'll try to really change him. Maybe it's possible. We are talking about Durance a lot. Can you imagine, having that conversation about Sagani? Edit: If you replace every curseword you wrote with a silly placeholder, you start to notice, how much you curse. -

Why do people have the wish to bring everyone else "back to the light"? Durance just IS. You can make him think a bit, but all in all he won't change. Why should he? He's a ****ed up old veteran. He's already had his great adventure. He already changed and yes, maybe not for the best. Can't you just accept that? P.S.: Tides of Numenera looks like the cheapest, dumbest kind of wanna-be-deep glowy kindergarden-sci-fi-steampunk-bull**** rip-off imaginable in this universe or any other. In my opinion of course. -

Exactly! I wish, I could visit Ashfall with Durance in PoE2. -

In a way. But Xzar and Montaron had a nice storyline throughout BG1+2 (I have to admit, that I played the game with Mods so often that I'm not quite shure, if their BG2 content was a mod or not). Jan also wasn't just a comic character. In a way he was BG2's Eder. Regarding Tiax: Well. Maybe yes. I didn't say, that I wanted them to be as shallow as some of them were in oler RPGs. This is 2017. What I really want to see are believable freaks. Like Durance was. Speaking of Durance: Well... me. -

He's OK. I like Aloth, but he's a little bit ... light. The whole Iselmyr thing is cool at the beginning, but once it's revealed it turns into a big "haha, Aloth has an Iselmyr"-joke. For me Aloth is nothing more than an interesting but normal character. Eder is also OK, because he's so ****ing normal, that it's interesting again. But it would be more interesting if he was the only one. What else have we got? Pallegina? A walking cliche, that tries not to be one. Hiravias? Soooooo funny. End of story. The Eskimo-Dwarf? Filler content. Zahua? Could have turned out very good, but didn't, due to a lack of will to do something real strange with him. The frog man? I always forget his name. I actually like him. But don't ask me why. DoC? Nice try. Sort of funny, but not edgy enough. GM? Not my taste, but now we are talking. Durance? Some people actually hate him. They dont hate him as a part of a video game that they rather would not have to be included. They hate him as a person. THAT is exactly the stuff, that I'm talking about. Don't get me wrong. I have nothing against those kind of characters. I understand that is what most people expect. But for me they are just fillers. Maybe what I want are also cheap cliches. I dont know. But at least not the same kind of cliches over and over. -
I'm the type of player that always chooses companions by their freak factor. I dont do that on purpose, I just like those guys. My favourites where Xzar, Jan, Xan, Tiax, ... I think you get the point. PS:T had, at least in my opinion excellent companions. Durance and Grieving mother brought a little bit of that freak factor to PoE1, but not nearly enough, if you ask me. Devil of Caroc was also OK, but way too polished (mehehe, polished...). Now I see the images of the new companions and read the bits of information given so far and I'm starting to fear, that we will only see those Eder/Pallegina-like normal nice guy types. The watercolor image from Update 13 has that fanfictionesque drinking-tea-with-the-gang vibe to it, that sends shivers down my spine. Not the good kind of shivers. Am I the only one here?
