handsy Posted May 10, 2018 Posted May 10, 2018 As title really, I can't see anyway of rotating the camera to a different angle. Thanks
Jayngo Posted May 10, 2018 Posted May 10, 2018 Traditional CRPG games like this never have a rotating camera. It wasn't until Divinity Original Sin came out that changed that. This game, PoE, and the pre-curser "Infinity Engine" games are 2D backgrounds, unable to have 3D camera rotation. At least, that's what I think I remember reading so many years back. 1
handsy Posted May 10, 2018 Author Posted May 10, 2018 Thanks for the quick reply - I thought I was missing something behind walls and other objects....obviously not
Redglyph Posted October 27, 2020 Posted October 27, 2020 Neverwinter Nights and others had camera rotation. It's a shame, Unity allows that without any problem. They put the same limitation in Pathfinder, fortunately there's a mod to work around this artificial limitation for that game.
Boeroer Posted October 27, 2020 Posted October 27, 2020 (edited) PoE and Deadfire are different. They are kind of "faux"3D: all the maps, backgrounds, buildings etc. are high-resolution, pre-rendered, handdrawn backgrounds that get enriched with 3D objects such as trees, enemies and the party. That leads to some funny things (try to cast a Rolling Flame up some stairs - that aren't really stairs but it's a flat picture) but imo it looks really beautiful and way better than a complete 3D environment. So there can't ever be a rotating camera whether Unity3D supports it or not. No idea about Pathfinder:Kingmaker. I also don't think it's a shame. Rotating cameras tend to confuse players' sense of direction. I absolutely prefer a fixed one. Being able to zoom in and out is great though. xzar_monty Posted October 28, 2020 Posted October 28, 2020 I also don't think that a rotating camera adds anything significant to a game like this. The backgrounds are extremely well done the way they are, and as you say, a rotating camera couldn't really work.

Also if the level design and art teams are working from one perspective then the images tend to be clearer on what are traversable planes versus non-traversable.
Theonlygarby Posted November 11, 2020 Posted November 11, 2020 To each their own but I much prefer the static camera. In my experience the rotating camera is always a little janky. The environments look so much better in deadfire than crpgs with rotating camera
daven Posted December 2, 2020 Posted December 2, 2020 Neverwinter Nights tried to please to many people and ended up frustrating everbody. nowt
