Malcador Posted July 15, 2015 Posted July 15, 2015 Yeah....you can already see the underlying animosity. Also what is the point of having a forum to discuss examples of bigotry ? Would it make you feel better to just vent ? Helps feed your delusion that you are fighting injustice by making snide remarks about it, I think, from observing that kind. aluminiumtrioxid Posted July 15, 2015 Posted July 15, 2015 An appropriately toxic image for the slow poison that it is. It's heartening to see that we don't need to plumb the depths of reddit in our search for hatred and bile, we have plenty of it here as well 1 "Lulz is not the highest aspiration of art and mankind, no matter what the Encyclopedia Dramatica says."
Fighter Posted July 15, 2015 Posted July 15, 2015 Perhaps ironically I just wanted to emulate the feminist/social justice way of describing things. I think I should use "problematic" next I think that's taking over the various acidic imagery like toxic and poisonous lately. Like: Their rightly recognized as hateful lingo is problematic.
Bartimaeus Posted July 15, 2015 Posted July 15, 2015 (edited) I think his point was that the sort of people that make/inhabit websites/subreddits for targeting/criticizing a specific type of people in a very particular way such as that subreddit does don't usually adhere to the highest of ethical/moral standards themselves, and often engage in behavior identical or at least similar to that which they supposedly abhor in the people they're targeting/criticizing. In my experience of these kinds of subreddits (regardless of who they're actually about), I couldn't say that would seem completely baseless... I dunno, in my experience, the kind of people whose favored pastimes include a mockery of MRAs generally tend towards more of the "point and laugh" variety instead of the "torches and pitchforks" crowd. (And make no mistake, MRAs richly deserve being mocked.) Well, like I said, I don't think it really matters who the target is: I visit KotakuInAction (basically the pro-GG subreddit for GG's stated intents and purposes, and not for any of the negative fringe elements of GG) and TumblrInAction (basically the anti Tumblr/super SJW subreddit) and PCMasterRace (super pro-PC and anti-console subreddit, as you might expect) once in a while, and though there are often topics of interest that I think are worth discussing there, the subreddits are also often bogged down with hyper-overreactions, hypocrisy, and general stupidity: large crowds of people often seem to have the tendency to not exercise much in the way of critical thinking regardless of what they're all collected there for. aluminiumtrioxid Posted July 15, 2015 Posted July 15, 2015 Translation: "Let my argument be to just call you an ignorant idiot. I don't have to explain squat, just to act all superior". Indeed I don't need to explain squat. Your metaphor was jumbled and made little sense in context, your usage of the word "toxic" was inadequate and spoke of a fundamental failure to understand the context in which it's employed by those you seek to mock, it was just plainly bad satire. Not much to explain. "Lulz is not the highest aspiration of art and mankind, no matter what the Encyclopedia Dramatica says."

Though I don't really use reddit and don't intend to for the foreseeable future. Yes...I thought that was laughable at the time, too...though I will say, upon further reflection (that I'm having right now), that it really depends on how she went about it, which I don't think we were ever given the details of. If by "removing wage negotiation", she meant "bring up everyone to at least a certain standard and don't 'overpay' anyone in the future unless we're going to bring up everyone else, too", then I could see an argument for it being a good thing. Of course, I think wage negotiations serve a use beyond just that, but I could at least see that as a half-decent argument and implementation. But again, I don't think we were actually ever given any real details on how that went down. Edited July 15, 2015 by Bartimaeus Quote How I have existed fills me with horror. aluminiumtrioxid Posted July 15, 2015 Posted July 15, 2015 Again alum... "I know better. I'm more qualified. I'm more experienced." This has no meaning, just self imposed titles. Let me explain to you in detail, then. What you claimed to be an attempt at emulating "the SJW lingo" was essentially this sentence: "[a harpy made of corn syrup is] an appropriately toxic image for the slow poison it is". Whereas, one assumes, "the slow poison" refers both to corn syrup (which is spectacularly unhealthy) and TEH EVILZ OF FEMINISM (who will, presumably, take all of our freedomz in seemingly-innocuous baby steps, hence "slow" and "poison"). Problem with the usage of "toxic image" is that a/ it either directly refers to "slow poison" itself, which is, while technically true, also a tautology (poison is toxic, who would've thought?) or b/ it's about the feminist harpies slowly poisoning our society, which would be golden, except... While "SJWs" don't categorically reserve the term "toxic" to inanimate phenomena, whenever it's used to characterize people, it generally refers to the kind who make civil conversation impossible by their very presence (you probably know the type, loud, abrasive, have no clue of what they're talking about), not those who are insidious and manipulative. Hence, if "slow poison" refers to feminists, the usage of "toxic" wouldn't really apply, since in your interpretation, society doesn't realize it's been poisoned UNTIL IT'S TOO LATE (dun dun dun!). Or if we're specifically referring to the subgroup of feminists who are toxic, the "slow poison" term is inadequate. Therefore, we have three possibilities: either the usage of "toxic" in the sentence is a tautology, or it fails to emulate the conventions of the group you claim to mock, or your metaphor is a mess. (Also, as someone who has a passing familiarity with how human bodies work, I take issue with the implied characterization of corn syrup as "toxic". It's about as toxic as table salt, ie. while it can kill you, it's really not a very practical way of poisoning someone.) 1) I don't think I'm misunderstanding "SJWs". 2) If I do it's not really my job to understand their bizarre reinventions of commonly understood words when they are trying to talk to the public. 1) Most people who misunderstand something generally don't realize they misunderstand it. Hence misunderstanding, not "un-understanding". 2) If you're attempting to satirize a group's usage of words, yes, it's kind of your job to understand how they're actually using those words. Or at least to not throw a butthurt temper tantrum when someone corrects you. 1 "Lulz is not the highest aspiration of art and mankind, no matter what the Encyclopedia Dramatica says."
Ineth Posted July 15, 2015 Posted July 15, 2015 Someone has too high an opinion of the average person on the SJ reddits, heh. Also the ex-CEO Yishan is apparently saying things are not Pao's fault, so I guess they ran her out for nothing even if she and her husband have a sketchy history. But isn't that the guy who recommended her for the position in the first place, and is a personal friend of hers? So it's kind of a given that he's taking her side and trying to make her look better. Then again, I wouldn't be surprised if it were true that Pao wasn't the main source of some of reddits unpopular actions of recent months. It takes more than an interim CEO acting alone, to change the course of a company. I guess the reditors will just have to stage another 'revolt' then, won't they... ( Good usage of the word tautology Where did you read that word in Hungary? Its not used by most English people and most people wouldn't know what it means. But it effectively enhances a point "Abashed the devil stood and felt how awful goodness is and saw Virtue in her shape how lovely: and pined his loss” John Milton "We don't stop playing because we grow old; we grow old because we stop playing.” - George Bernard Shaw "What counts in life is not the mere fact that we have lived.
