Huh, how about that:

 

NCC-1701 = 948 Ft

CVN-65 = 1,123 Ft

 

For some reason I always thought that NCC-1701 would be much larger.

The Enterprise never had a big crew. Just the supply of redshirts.

The saucer section is..what, 2 decks? The main body is about the size of a destroyer..and is mostly made up of the engine room?

It does make the wide halls and spacious rooms seem less likely, though.

the question is whether those plans existed before or after the model were used in the pilot episode.  am suspecting that the model were a reality and then somebody afterwards decided to fill in the empty space with a "rational" ship design.  am not enough o' a star trek fan to know if the chicken or egg came first in this situation.

The Enterprise increases in size with every new revision. By the time we get to NCC-1701-E, that bad boy is 2,249 Ft in length!
