@Hurlie: Just avoid Houston highways during rush hour, unless you enjoy being trapped in very hot and humid weather.

You guys are getting me excited about my trip across the south this summer.  I've never really been to Texas, so driving across it and spending a few days in San Antonio should be an adventure.

I can recommend going to Austin and take a dip into Barton Springs. Very refreshing when it is 104 degrees. I can also recommend spending a few days in Galveston. Dallas seemed nice. Avoid Houston though, it has to be the most soulless place in the US that i have visited.

Tell me about it, we got stuck on the I-10 to San Antonio on what felt like years.

Unfortunately I have to go through Houston to get to New Orleans, but I'll be heading through midday, so hopefully the traffic won't be bad.

Houston is all right if you're local and know where to go, but sucks if you want to visit. You can't really walk from place to place either, so it probably isn't a good idea to stop by unless you have a friend that can show you around.

But now that moral high ground is gone, he is a racist and that immediately undermines his position IMO. He should address his own bigotry and insecurity first before attacking what the Federal government is doing

Western logic. If victim of crime is racist this is mean everything is ok. You can rob, rape or kill him.  As we known in South Africa such behaviour considered as normal ( massacres of farmers blah-blah, nobody worrying).

It's not surprising when people of ex-USSR don't want such "democracy" at home.

It's not 'western logic'. There's no logic to it. It's also not unique to westerners to have such thoughts. Emotional stupidity and shallow depth of thought can be found throughout all cultures and societies in humanland, it's sadly quite common.

Well to be fair, we only went to the city centre. We never bothered with the surrounding area.

So this guy said something very racist recently. He lost the little sympathy I had for him.

Isn't it wonderful when folks call people racist and don't substantiate?

Take your trolling elsewhere please.

Are you kidding?  It's all over the news.  The guy is nuts, but if you've spent much time in Nevada, that should not surprise anyone.

It doesn't really change the whole case though.  It just makes it clear that everybody involved is terrible.   :p

I lived in Vegas for a year a little more than a decade ago, and have been through Nevada innumerable times for work and play. I currently still have family living there, and will likely visit them later this year. I've also made the drive up/down interstate 15 between Vegas and Utah (it's a nice drive), which goes right by Bunkerville a great many times. No doubt you think I'm nuts.

Are you really implying that the people of Nevada are by and large nuts while simultaneously claiming one of it's residents is racist for some remarks that aren't necessarily racist? If so, look in the mirror for the bigotry you think others suffer.

You've spent that much time in Nevada and you haven't noticed there are a lot of crazies there?   :aiee:

I don't dismiss groups of people in the millions as crazies as you do. The majority of what I'd say is crazy that I saw in Nevada was perpetrated by tourists, of which there are a great many.

Arizona is all 'let's build walls in the desert' crazy.  Utah is mormon crazy.  California is kind of split crazy, you've got the hollywood crazy, the dotcom crazy, the central valley crazy, the Humboldt/Santa Cruz crazy.  Berkeley is like another planet.

But even with all that, Nevada is bit further over the edge.  You've got all this open space, with small pockets of either ultra conservative small towns or meccas for gambling and prostitution.  It's cray cray.

(Although Arizona apparently gets a fair amount of the crazy mormons, since Utah is actively trying to push them out.)

This, from someone who has admitted they haven't actually been to most of the places in the U.S..

Having been to all of these places, repeatedly, even having lived in two of them for some time, you have an incredibly skewed and bigoted view of the people in these places. I hope during your vacation this summer you take the opportunity to get to know some of the locals and it enlightens you a bit.

@Messhugger: Yeah, a lot of people do that. Can't really blame them, it isn't like there is a map that shows the best places to party.

No apology warranted. Next time post the links with your accusation.

Come on Vals, you called his bluff and he proved you wrong. You need to have the maturity to apologize or at least say " I am wrong, you were right"

I have said this before but there is a serious problem on these forums with some people not being able to accept they are wrong on any point or concede that someone may be right about something that they dispute

There was no bluff called. He came here initially trolling and I called him on it. To his credit he came back and took off his troll outfit.

Wow, you are now on my ****ing **** list. Lower your ego and learn how to be a better person.

Austin and Galveston are awesome. Austin is one of my favorite places in the U.S.., many great restaurants, an awesome music scene, and generally good fun loving people, despite it being the center of politics in Texas. Modern Dallas and Houston are generally the opposite of what most folks consider Texas to be, they've largely become a Mecca of sorts for socialists, have a great many dependents on the state living in them while at the same time have some extremely wealthy and powerful entities there, and the modern culture there by and large sucks, I'm not really a fan of either of them, but there is some good history to be found in both cities. Both cities would really be more at home in a state like Illinois or Massachusetts, they are islands and anomalies in the State of Texas. San Antonio is better, but it's slowly going in the direction of Dallas/Houston.

El Paso isn't much to look at, but I do recommend a visit there at some point. And yes, Amarillo has some exceptionally great Steakhouses in a land where great Steakhouses are fairly common.

I'd say Hollywood is the most soulless place the U.S. I've been, by far.

You might be taking things a wee bit too seriously around here, but I appreciate your travel advice.  My current summer plans having me going through:

Las Cruces, NM

San Antonio, TX

New Orleans, LA

Memphis, TN

Branson, MO

Dodge City, KS

Santa Fe, NM

I can't deviate too far off that, since I'm already pretty maxed out on how much gas I am willing to pay for (I'm at 4800 miles at about 12 mpg), but if you guys think there is anything in the vicinity that needs seeing, I'm all ears.

Taos might be a little too far from Sante Fe but I enjoyed it a lot but I'm a sucker for artsy crap

Not sure what your path is through AZ (my crazy home state) but if you find yourself on I-40 between Flagstaff and Albuquerque I definitely recommend the Petrified Forest National Park if you haven't already been.

Good advice.  If you do a side trip to Taos I recommend the Hotel La Fonda.  :)  (Iirc it's about an hour and 20 minutes one way unless you take the "low road")

Some great advice about New Mexico.  I think I'll probably arrange a separate trip just for New Mexico some day, since it's actually pretty close.  This summer we are mostly just driving through.

Every year I put together a bunch of travel plans, figure out which I can afford, and then present them to my wife.  She chose the New Orleans itinerary this year.  :)

Some of my favorite New Orleans restaurants:

Commander's Palace - (Uptown  - reservations required)

Pascal Manale's (BBQ Shrimp - reservations required)

Mr B's Bistro (French Quarter - also for the BBQ Shrimp)

Central Grocery (Muffalatas at lunch - a whole muffalata is good for two people and then some ...  lol)

Mothers (Po-Boys - Roast Beef Debris is my favorite but the shrimp is awesome too - gets packed at lunch so get there early before the locals hit the place .... )

Camelia Grill

Bon Ton Café

Brennans (French Quarter - dinner)

Dickie Brennans Steakhouse

Original Pierre Maspero's - French Quarter

It's actually difficult to limit the list - finding a good restaurant in New Orleans is easy.

Edit:  Trey Yuen's Chinese restaurant on the north shore of Lake Ponchartrain does Chinese with a Cajun/Creole twist.

And in typical Val's style he blames anything and anyone but himself for misinformation. Well at least you didn't say it was a conspiracy theory...so that's progress in my books

When have I posted misinformation? When I have said something was a 'conspiracy theory'? And scroll up Brucie. I was indeed quoting you on the 'NKKK', and I did blame myself. You even quoted it. I guess this is another stellar example of your failure at reading comprehension?

A conspiracy theory is misinformation, well almost all of them are. And you operate in a world of conspiracy theories. Sorry that my post may sound nasty but I'm just being honest

And once again you are not accepting reality, part of your justification for not getting NKKKK name right is that I also got it wrong. The fact that I didn't use his name correctly shouldn't be any part of your reason :)

It depends on what you talk about. If we talk about jewlizards from Alpha Centauri manipulating humans to become cattle for the great lord Athe, then i would agree. But if it is the case of a bunch of guys from the private sector suddenly working as public officials for regulating the very same industry that they came from. Then yeah, then it is a conspiracy by default.
