Keyrock Posted March 29, 2014 Posted March 29, 2014 Yup, that super long regular season of America's Pastime America's Second Favorite America's Third Favorite sport is upon us. So how about that Miguel Cabrera deal? Holy ****ing ****. Don't get me wrong, Miggy is a terrific player, but that contract is INSANE. The guy is 30 years old. 30! What are the chances the Tigers are regretting that deal 5 years from now? 80%? 95%? 2 RFK Jr 2024 "Any organization created out of fear must create fear to survive." - Bill Hicks

Hurlshort Posted March 29, 2014 Posted March 29, 2014 It's an even year, so I look forward to watching the Giants win the World Series. 1
Leferd Posted March 29, 2014 Posted March 29, 2014 Oakland's down two starting pitchers. Should still be enough to take the AL West. #NerdPower 1 "Things are funny...are comedic, because they mix the real with the absurd." - Buzz Aldrin."P-O-T-A-T-O-E" - Dan Quayle
Guard Dog Posted March 30, 2014 Posted March 30, 2014 Allrightythen! Let's get your division, wildcard and WS picks here people. NL EAST: Nationals (Originally I'd have said Braves but they have too many pitching injuries) NL Central: Cardinals (Top to bottom they are the most complete team) NL West: Dodgers (Hey, they already have a 2 game lead!) AL East: Rays (No I'm not being a fan here. This will be the best team they have ever fielded) AL Central: Tigers (I reserve the right to change this pick to KC by the All Star Break) AL West: Rangers (I'm not loving any of these teams to tell the truth but the Rangers will have the best starting lineup) NL Wild Card: Braves & Pirates AL Wild Card: Red Sox & Royals World Series: Rays defeat Dodgers in 7 (Ok I AM being a fan here!) 1 "While it is true you learn with age, the down side is what you often learn is what a damn fool you were before" Thomas Sowell

The Miggy deal is going to end up bad as the A-Roid, Pujols and Hamilton deals. 2
Keyrock Posted March 30, 2014 Author Posted March 30, 2014 (edited) The Trout deal is very reasonable. He's the best player in baseball and he's only 22. There is always a chance of things going south because of injuries or whatever, but chances are the Angels don't wind up regretting that deal. Miggy is terrific, but he turns 31 in 3 weeks. The Tigers are most likely getting 3, maybe 4 more years of greatness out of him at most. After that, they'll be stuck with a past his prime first baseman with steadily declining numbers for another 6 or so years. Of course, if they win at least one title with Miggy, it will ease the pain during those later years, but if they don't, this will wind up being a massive albatross around their necks. Leferd Posted March 30, 2014 Posted March 30, 2014 (edited) To be fair, there really isn't a salary cap or harsh penalties for overspending as there are in other sports. But the Cabrera deal isn't nearly so bad as the one the Giants gave to Hunter Pence. $18.5m/yr for the next five years. That's more annual salary than what Lebron is making! Absolutely ludicrous for league average corner outfielder production through his age 35 year! kgambit Posted March 30, 2014 Posted March 30, 2014 (edited) AL ROY: SS Xander Bogaerts, BOS I hate to admit it but I think the Rangers will finish third in the west. Their rotation looks beat up with Holland out for the year. Harrison and Darvish are suffering from nagging injuries. M Perez and Ogando had crap springs, and the Angels castoffs totally sucked. Soto and Profar are out for 2 1/2 months, Engel Beltre is likely out for the year. Feliz got sent done to AAA as his velocity is down. The lone bright spot out of spring training was Michael Choice. Leferd Posted March 30, 2014 Posted March 30, 2014 Hated that the A's had to trade away Michael Choice. Rangers got a good one. 1 "Things are funny...are comedic, because they mix the real with the absurd." - Buzz Aldrin."P-O-T-A-T-O-E" - Dan Quayle
kgambit Posted March 31, 2014 Posted March 31, 2014 Hated that the A's had to trade away Michael Choice. Rangers got a good one. What was the rationale for the trade? Gentry's a good ball player but did the A's really need him? 1
Keyrock Posted March 31, 2014 Author Posted March 31, 2014 (edited) And Victorino strained his hammy in the last spring training game of the year despite the fact that the Sawx only played him in 9 games during spring training specifically to try to avoid having him sprain his hammy. I have a sneaking suspicion that this will be the first of many visits Shane makes to the 15 day DL this year. Gentry's a good ball player but did the A's really need him? The belief was that Gentry could help right away whereas Choice is still developing. In addition, the A's have a lot of flyball pitchers and Gentry covers a lot of ground in the outfield. Essentially a calculated move for the short term to help win a tight AL West. (Intra-division trade notwithstanding...) 1 "Things are funny...are comedic, because they mix the real with the absurd." - Buzz Aldrin."P-O-T-A-T-O-E" - Dan Quayle

(Intra-division trade notwithstanding...) Seems a pretty steep price for what amounted to a fourth outfielder. I'm not complaining - I think the Rangers are ecstatic to have Choice.
Hurlshort Posted April 1, 2014 Posted April 1, 2014 I'm not one to ever question Billy Beane, I'm guessing Choice will have some fatal flaw in the majors The Hunter Pence contract is summed up nicely here. It is eye popping, but Pence is a pretty valuable player to the team. People are more upset that they wouldn't give Pablo Sandoval the same deal, but it all comes down to health. Speaking of which I think they Giants are a very solid team, but they are one injury away from catastrophe. Of course, the Dodgers are in trouble if they lose Kershaw for an extended time, so I guess that is applicable to all teams.
Leferd Posted April 1, 2014 Posted April 1, 2014 The Giants are going to be good this year - probably high 80's to low 90's in the win column. But I don't see them catching the Dodgers. It'll be a dogfight for the NL Wildcards with Pittsburgh, Cincinnati, Atlanta, and San Francisco. Guard Dog Posted April 1, 2014 Posted April 1, 2014 I think my brain turned to jelly. I spent the entire day, from 12 until 1 am in front of the TV yesterday. I watched that outstanding Cubs - Pirates game, then the Rays - Blue Jays game (yea!) then the Marlins - Rockies & finally the last half of the Indians & A's. What a great day. kgambit Posted April 1, 2014 Posted April 1, 2014 No problem with the Rangers bats in the opener as they pounded Cliff Lee for 8 ER in 5 innings. Unfortunately Texas' pitching totally sucked and they lose 14-10.
