Walsingham
Apparently for the last couple of days, the Evolve servers have been under sustained DDoS attack. I figured this might affect other members. But I'm also unclear why such an attack might occur. "It wasn't lies. It was just... bull****"." -Elwood Blues tarna's dead; processing... complete. Orogun01
Denial of Service; think of a massive protest in front of a store that's blocking traffic to it. I'd say the answer to that question is kind of like the answer to "who's the sucker in this poker game?"* *If you can't tell, it's you.
Walsingham
I do know what DDoS is, you fool. But why Evolve? I was talking to a techie mate of mine last night and he said that DDoS is his biggest fear for his company. There's almost nothing you can do about it unless you're a huge international firm. It's things like this which make me wonder if the Internet as it currently runs is sustainable. "It wasn't lies. It was just... bull****"." -Elwood Blues tarna's dead; processing... complete. AGX-17
Never heard of it. This "Evolve" thing. It's things like this which make me wonder if the Internet as it currently runs is sustainable. Change is a fundamental aspect of technology, nobody's running NT servers from 1998 anymore for a reason. i.e. The reason why most of your Windows 3.1 programs won't run on anything newer than XP (if even that,) is because the fundamental kernel-level programming has changed substantially to keep pace with advances in hardware as well as improvements in coding. Just like with viruses and other malware, IT security is constantly responding and adapting new defenses, the whole computing sector has always been constantly evolving. Years back, my friends and I made a Diplomacy clone game for WIndows 3.1, complete with LAN support. It would not run at all in Windows 95. You see, ever since the whole Doritos Locos Tacos thing, Taco Bell thinks they can do whatever they want.
Bester
I was talking to a techie mate of mine last night and he said that DDoS is his biggest fear for his company. There's almost nothing you can do about it unless you're a huge international firm. Or unless you're an actual nerd and therefore know about cloudflare. Sorry to disappoint, but your friend isn't a techie, he's just some guy who thinks he knows stuff just because he can reinstall windows by pressing "next" all the time. He certainly is a techie. I care not for your cloudflare. I've seen him trying to do washing. I would say that web server techies should know Cloudflare is far from best of cloud based DDoS protection services and company would do much better to choose for example Incapsula that fares much better on reviews especially when you include WAF (web application firewall). When you also regard fact that Incapsula is cheaper than Cloudflare thus I would say that it is quite easy choice which service to recommend. And it should be remembered that even these could based DDoS protections have their limit and they can't in most cases protect web page against massive DDoS attack and even leave your service unprotected if such attack occurs to ensure that their other customers aren't effected. http://ddos-protection-services-review.toptenreviews.com/incapsula-enterprise-review.html http://zeroscience.mk/files/wafreport2013.pdf http://phoboslab.org/log/2013/02/how-much-traffic-is-too-much-traffic-for-cloudflare
