All this posting about booze is working up a hell of a thirst. So I just grabbed a Flying Dog IPA (if you don't know what that is you are not a beer drinker. I bet Monte & Enoch know!). Here's to all of you guys and dying young! Cheers.

I hope shall always remember the comment of our training sergeant, as we were waking up covered in frost on exercise, trying to stamp out the kinks in our toes and looking forward to marching and running in general. The sergeant sparked up and some wise-ass inadvisedly said "Shouldn't smoke those, sahn't. What do you smoke for?"

Obviously feeling the urge to educate more than the urge to pan recruits he smiled calmly and said.

"I smoke so I don't find myself lying in bed at the age of 90, dying of **** all."

You can not drink and not smoke as much as you ****ing want, but you're still going to die. And having spent a lot of time in hospices over the last few years I feel I can say that what people who are dying generally want is to make their peace with family, and to have done an awful lot more drinking, smoking, and fighting than they did.

I'm not saying you have to live life by drinking and smoking and fighting. I'm just saying that life is for living, not keeping sealed in a bag like a first edition of a comic, or the body of an exchange student.

It seems that giving up drinking can be really bad as well.

Guard Dog, I've drunk it myself in the states so if you can get hold of a six-pack of Fuller's London Pride then you might enjoy it, one of my favourite session beers.

Anything by Badger tends to be good too. Wals will be winging in soon no doubt.

Any IPA (India Pale Ale) is likely to be good, and popular abroad as it is designed to be drunk at a cooler temperature than most English beer.

I'm sorry but, why are we doing this again? I'm already down to my third glass of whiskey and second beer and I can't quite recall what it was all for.o:)

I'd say the answer to that question is kind of like the answer to "who's the sucker in this poker game?"*

It's part of the forum's battle with the grim reaper, we are giving him the middle finger by drinking heavily.

No, I think that's another thread.

BUT JUST SAY NO

There are two bottles of it in my fridge at present. A local favorite-- their brewery is only about an hour's drive away.

Have you tried their Gonzo Imperial Porter? Goooood stuff.

Cheers!

As a Cuban I can tell that those were rolled by a fat hairy dude named Esteban, and picked up by me. The only thing rolled in the thighs of hot Cuban chicks was mine o:)

What kind of po-faced lunacy is this?

I'm precisely thirty minutes away from my first beer of the weekend, and given the apparently suicidal nature of the act I thought I'd give a grim-faced nod to all you heroic chaps and chapesses who will be kicking dirt in Death's eyesockets, and drinking this weekend. Our courage and dedication may be all that stands between civilisation and the health-Taliban. May we drink, sing, dance inadvisably, and join in comradeship and curry.

I find it hypocritical that you people are perfectly will to ignore any health advice about alcohol and pretend it is completely safe whilst simultaneously willing to judge and lecture those of us who partake in what are in fact healthier drugs such as psychedelics or marijuana.

To which I shall respond by observing that your dope smoking has addled your wits! Because I have assiduously argued it should be legal. If sky diving is a matter for individual discretion then so too should cooking one's hippocampus like a fillet of duck.

I am aware you have, and you'll notice I was using the 2nd person plural as a collective term, not specifically targetting you. As to the personal insult - well, it's baseless. I stopped smoking marijuana a while ago when I started uni again this year. Been cruising on a HD average for engineering maths, Spanish, and chemistry ever since. I highly doubt I've any problem with my faculties.

BTW, more than the hippocampus I'd say it's the amygdala that gets wrecked by getting drunk.

MORALE VAMPIRE ALERT!

Well, your childish attitude aside, it's completely fair to juxtapose two social drugs, compare their harms, and ask people to think about why one of them is legal and the other is not.

Alcohol is not harmless and to pretend otherwise is immature. I enjoy a pint of Kilkenny with my nachos as well as the next man, but I don't see why I should be stupid enough to pretend that in excess alcohol is not formidably bad for my health.

1. The actual damage done to health by booze is very very small for amounts short of chronic abuse.

2. You're still simply blowing on a lit fuse. Yes, it's going faster, but it is going anyway.

Operating on the assumption that you are going to a ripe old age becase you eat carefully and do everything right is pretty daft. I'd say it was a good sight more childish.

Now where the hell is that grim reaper...

I have stared death in the face and won. The end result (Friday afternoon until now) was a slab of strong-ish (5.5%) Belgian beer, i.e. 16 500 ml cans, 4 bottles of half-decent red wine and three or four (I'm sure you'll forgive the memory problem) cheeky cognacs. I also smoked three Romeo Y Julietta No. 2s, having run out of Bolivars. I also irritated Krezack, a karmic reward if there ever was one (awww, Krezzie!).

I feel great. I was a bit fuzzy this morning but nothing some bacon, eggs and cognac couldn't sort out. My wife was away visiting family and arrived home to learn of my heroism: she is extremely proud. I am now on the 5th bottle of claret although I am going to skip booze entirely for the next twelve hours to de-tox.

The only casualty was that I was so drunk I watched Legion on the TV, please see my drunken review on the movie thread.

Ha! Reaper! Screw you!

Cheers

A bit more to report for Sat and Sun than there was for Friday. Had a few beers before and during dinner on Saturday, and afterwards, the wife and I switched to Manhattans. That left me a little achy on Sunday morning. But I recovered ably and got to business this evening. Made myself a Negroni while my dinner was in the oven. Dared to challenge its tradition as a before-dinner drink and had another after that. Then a Flying Dog Pale Ale. Then a serving of scotch (with a single ice cube-- or "on the rock," as I say it) from a nearly-empty bottle of Balvenie 15-year that some relative had given me.

I've never been one to succumb to the silly reasoning that mixing different types of alcohol is more dangerous than drinking an equivalent amount of alcohol of a single type. But it did take me about 4 tries to type the word "silly" correctly. Will update with findings tomorrow.

Well Monday morning has rolled around and we are all still here. Maybe less a few brain cells but hey, we're young and we got lots of those to spare anyway.

After work Friday I was well on my way to a buzz when the wife called on her way home asking if I wanted dinner out. Went to a decent seafood joint and got a couple of martini's. She got a "Blue Chicago" or something like that that tasted like a Pixie stick and I just got a straight up vodka martini. Hers was good for her tastes but mine was like friggin rocket fuel. I swear to god I probably could have held a lighter in front of my face and blown flame from my mouth.

There was a study a couple months ago saying drinkers live longer, even heavy drinkers. So I started drinking a glass of wine a day. Now this study comes out and says alcohol is a major cause of cancer, so I quit drinking again. Damn ****ing studies!

I LOL'd when I read about your wife. I've certainly never entertained the possibliity of marrying any woman who didn't appreciate the value of excess.

On the way home tonight I picked up a bottle of superb red wine. I'll have to post the details in a bit.

Heck my wife did not drink at all and during the time we were together I didn't either. Well not much at least. The night she moved out I got good and drunk. In fact I got so smashed I did not sober up for almost three years.
