Runtime error (Win 7 64-bit)

Garenth

Question

So I got the game in the mail today, and ever since, I've had nothing but trouble with it. :(

First I had some issues with the installer stopping in the middle of things, so I cancelled it, re-booted and installed it again. This time things checked out but as soon as I tried to launch it I got this error message:

o6gv9k.jpg

After that, I thought "I'll just format my drive and re-install Windows, it's about time anyways". When I was done, and had installed the game again, everything seemed to work and the game ran perfectly.

The problem is, it only worked ONCE, the next time I tried to launch it I got the same bloody error message. This is really starting to annoy me by now. :o

Anyone have any idea what could be causing this, and more importantly, how I can fix it?

Here are my system specs:

Intel Core i5 750 @ 2.66GHz

8GB RAM

ATI Radeon HD5870

Windows 7 64-bit

Interesting that you guys are seeing it is the newer PhysX drivers - I'll try to get a ticket opened with NVIDIA, and talk to SEGA about having testers look at those new drivers and see if they can reproduce it.

But someone was asking what dependencies the game has. They are:

- Microsoft DirectX 9.0c (August 2009)

- Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 SP1 Runtime (7/28/2009 ATL Security Update version)

- NVIDIA's PhysX 9.09.0814 drivers (required even if you don't have an NVIDIA card, these manage the physics system in the engine)

What was tested was the versions of the software that are on disc 1.

If you see that this fixes it for you, please let us know - I'll refer the other parties to this thread as well.

Thanks all,

TG

Got it to work!!!

If you're an Nvidia user and can't start the game, uninstall the physX drivers that installed with your latest video card driver and run alpha protocol through steam. it will install its own version and run. at least in my case.

non nvidia.... uninstall physx in control pannel and see what happens.

cheers!

Hmm. uninstalled my Physx 9.10.0129 drivers, let drive sweeper get rid of the rest, installed PhysX 9.09.0814, the game still crashes

Running Windows XP 32, activated alright, but game would crash (two windows crash screens in a row for apgame.exe) when I clicked play. PhysX fixed it--uninstalled it from add/remove, then clicked play in Steam, which first installed some PhysX version, and then it works!

I actually got into the game twice somehow by doing all the random crap that has been suggested all over. None of it works anymore, though, just getting Runtime Error every single time now. Is there a patch being worked on for this game?

I've tried everything mentioned in this topic (well...in this forum... even in the web... including SEGA FORUM topics). Nothing could help. Reformatiing, reinstalling Windows is not an option.

After activation I got

Runtime Error (Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library)

... AppName: apgame.exe

ModName: msvcr80.dll

ModVer: 8.0.50727.4053

Offset: 000046b4

Alpha Protocol (not Steam)

Application wouldn't start :o

XP 32-bit SP3 HOME Edition, GTX 260, drivers (any, I have many of them, can't help), physX (any), DirectX 9.0 c (any versions) 3200 RAM, Core2Duo etc. Other games run well, no bugs, glitches, errors... the only thing that refuses to start is Alpha Protocol.

Well... I spent 3 days to avoid this error. Even tried to use crack (shame on me, but it was the last attempt to try): the same error.

My friend launched Protocol on 9600 gm, Vista 32 bit SP 2 Home Premium notebook - activated and played without any errors. He enjoys playing, I am wrecked. :verymad:

To Obsidian guys

What should I do? What's next? :( Buying new computer? Installing new Windows? :ermm:

There will be no patch?

To guys who solved the problem, in STEAM too (by reinstalling DirectX, Microsoft 2005 C++ etc.):

What version of PhysX, DX, C++ helped you? What Windows versions do you have, Service packs...

I really don't know what to do. I think I'm doomed to miss this game (which seems to be great from what I saw).

And F: New Vegas... I hope when released it won't crash in such a way, at least I won't to have a look at the game on my monitor, not at the damn error.

Not fixed for XP 64bit, Tried all the things on this site and many others, such as Sega and Microsoft. Can get get an OFFICAL Response from the Devs please? Pref that we will get patch to fix this and soon, its been out for almost a week or two now in certain places and no patch for C++ Error, Really? Have all the Devs gone on holiday with all the money they made?

I love Obsidian games, especially KOTOR2, I thought Alpha protocol looked good then when I saw it was Obsidian I ordered instantly, needless to say im very disappointed because I cant even get the game to run and I ordered online from game.co.uk so I cant get a refund (they dont do refunds on PC games).

If anyone has found a work around for XP64 please let me know and ill give it a try.

The problem is definately NOT solved! This is the first game I bought that doesn't even effin start!

APGame.exe starts and immediately crashes. I tried everything possible and everything that was mentioned in this thread but nothing helped.

So I took a closer look at the event viewer and saw that apgame.exe tries to "do sth." with KERNELBASE.DLL and at that exact moment the game crashes.

Holy Moly, I was able to start the game. Not only once but everytime.

I was about to give up and in a final try I again did the following two things that I already did before but which didn't help at that time. So I am still kinda perplexed why they helped this time.

Anyway, what I did was:

Once again I deinstalled all my graphic drivers and deinstalled everything NVIDIA on my system.

Then a reboot.

After the reboot I installed the newest ATI Catalyst Driver 10.5 from http://game.amd.com/us-en/drivers_catalyst...windows-7-64bit .

Reboot.

After the reboot I installed the newest PhysX Software from http://www.nvidia.com/object/physx_9.10.0129.html .

Reboot.

The game now starts everytime I want to, although it takes a very long time to load.

But i STILL can not play the game because every savegame - does not care if user generated or autosave - does not load and loading a savegame crashes the game.

So I will try to get a refund for this piece of crap and try to convince all my buddies to not buy this junk.

I'm getting the same trouble on XP SP3. What's odd is that I was able to complete 2.5 playthroughs, and the only thing I've done to my computer since playing AP last was uninstalling a couple of games and installing Fallout 3 (a disappointment).

America's Army (the deploy client, anyway; had to manually delete the main folder), KOTOR, and Space Siege. I also deleted the image of the ME2 DVD since I hadn't needed it for a while and the case is sitting within arm's reach if I get the burning desire to play. I think that's the full list.

Trying to install the Visual C++ from Disc 1 didn't seem to do anything, rebooting didn't help, and from what I've seen online reinstalling the game doesn't seem to help either.

Just an update for anyone who may suffer from a similar problem: my problem is triggered by whether I have GPGNet (from the Space Siege DVD specifically) on my system. I was fine until I uninstalled GPGNet, uninstalling and reinstalling Alpha Protocol after that didn't fix anything, but reinstalling GPGNet fixes the problem immediately.

Just a point of interest I've noticed from browsing these forums:

The devs don't care much about you. Out of all the topics listed here, not a single one has had a developer response, not one. A lone moderator and a solitary administrator are all you will get, and only if you are lucky. Most stores won't refund money for an opened game, so as far as they're concerned, they have your cash and could frankly care less if the game runs on your system. It's always fascinating how companies fall in to the trap of "we've got their cash, so screw them and their problems". Customer service does matter, and being ignored when the product you just shelled out a hefty chunk of cash to use doesn't function is simply unforgivable to the customer base.

^Sega's support was very responsive, though unable to do much other than assure me that developers knew of and were working on the problem.

As for the silence of developers, it's my understanding they have marching orders not to talk much for one reason or another.

Just wanted to say that I have the exact same problem (running XP x64, Phenom 9850, Radeon 5850).

I was ready for a buggy game, but the fact that I can't even start it seems really like a bad joke. Seriously though, Obsidian needs to get some better coders, they're becoming like Troika as far as stability of their games goes....

Okay, I've installed AP yesterday evening and, so far, have never made it past the activation, which crashed. According to the SEGA site, the game's been registered fine, though.

I get the Visual C++ error on starting APgame.exe, the shortcut on my desktop seems to do nothing at all and my patience is wearing thin at an alarming rate.

I've installed the Visual C++ 2005 and 2008 redistributables from Microsoft's website in their x86 and x64 incarnations, but still no joy.

Might I remind the ladies and gentlemen of Obsidian and SEGA that I've paid for this game? With real money, that I had to work for? Just in case it slipped anyone's attention?

So, this is how it's going to work, Obsidian/SEGA:

- Either I get this game to work with or without your assistance within the next 14 (fourteen) days,

- or, you're publishing a patch that addresses this issue inside of those next 14 (fourteen) days,

- or, I'm returning the game on 21 July 2010 and get refunded.

I'm sorry, but I'm tired of games that have issues or don't run at all, because, you see, the money I paid is perfectly useable right away, and so I expect the product I buy for it to be.

Edited for driver information:

I'm using Catalyst 10.4.

motherboard and processor drivers are up to date,

so are the drivers for the sound card.

Great. Managed to get the game to run once yesterday evening by uninstalling, then reinstalling, then activating via the webpage, not the activator.

Unfortunately, this worked only once. Now, when I try to run the game, I'm back to the runtime error on trying to start the game. I think I'm going to wait until the 21st, at which point this thing goes back to the store, unless Obsidian sees fit to fix it.

Oh, one more thing, Obsidian: I don't think I'm going to buy another game you make. First the unfinished KotOR 2, then NWN2 with its various problems, now this. Don't count on my money in the future.

I had the SAME problem and it seems to be the DRM. However, now it seems i have a reliable way to get into the game:

1. Delete the folder 'Documents (And Settings)\All Users\Application Data\SEGA Corporation'

2. Delete the folder 'Documents (And Settings)\YourUserName\Application Data\SEGA Corporation'

3. Run the game (APGame.exe). The DRM screen will show up and will request you to input the game key

4. Input an INVALID game key. For example change one symbol, or type in some random line (would be even better to make it shorter than the real key just in case)

5. It will show you 'the key is wrong'.

6. Now Input the VALID key. Your key.

7. Strangely enough it still shows for me 'The key is wrong'. But when i type the VALID key in again it works ok and gets to the next screen.

8. In that 'screen' you have two buttons one of which is to RUN the game.

Unfortunately after you exit you have to do the whole procedure again. Still. Worked for me.

The ONLY way the game starts for me is when i get TWO buttons in the DRM screen after the key entered was valid. If i enter the key right immediately the game starts with no buttons to click. And it doesn't start and shows the same error you posted.

I don't know if it'll work for you. Because my game directory is all messed up now. I've tried to move configuration files all around, and tried to use a ... noCD... Two noCDs. They didn't run as well. Besides it's WinXP SP3 x86 i have installed, not x64. Give it a try.

Thank you. I'll give it a try. I would never have thought of trying an invalid key first.

Ah, well. Didn't work, exactly.

So, bcigor, your method works for me on a fresh install. Once I quit the game, it stops working. Even though I've deleted the SEGA Corp folders in All Users and My username, running APGame.exe doesn't bring up the keycode validation dialogue. It just crashes with the runtime library error that I've come to detest so much.

It's been almost two weeks, and I'm tired of wasting my time trying to get this game to run. Lessons learned:

  • Never again I'll buy a game that's just come out without reading reviews and tech support forums first.
  • Never again I'll trust a software company just because I've kinda enjoyed games they made in the past. (Yes, I'm looking at you, Obsidian.)
  • Never again will I put up with buggy software. Next time, it's straight back to the vendor for a refund. I know programming is hard, I know debugging is hell, I know there are too many configurations to really make everything run on every rig, but frankly, none of that is my responsibility. It's the publisher's, so they'd better get their collective act together.
  • Most likely, I'm done buying anything Obsidian puts out on faith. Next time, prove to me that it works before you grab my cash.

Rant over.

Try again when the patch comes out - I've had games that won't run from all kinds of developers so I feel your pain, but perhaps it will help. Unfortunately runtime errors don't usually tend to have makeshift 'community solutions'.
