Mamoulian War Posted April 14, 2010 Posted April 14, 2010 Yes it is at least few companies are trying to do something which is resembling the original IP... And i am seriously sick that 9 out of 10 games produced in the West are stupid FPSs... Compare today's high-quality shooters with those cheap Easter European wannabe-Jagged Alliance clones and then let's talk about qualit again, right? The only XCOM strategy game I'd accept would have to come from Firaxis, because they know their genre. Other than that, I'm glad this genre is almost exctinct. Rain makes everything better.
Mamoulian War Posted April 14, 2010 Posted April 14, 2010 last time i've seen something which could be named High Quality shooter, was when Quake 3 Arena was released... So yes even iranian indie games offer more quality than most of the FPSs junk i've seen last 7+ years... and compared to them Eastern european production is godly... When was the last time we saw a high-quality TB strategy game from a western developer (apart from Civ4?). Bioshock absolutely overrated, HL2 boring and to short compared to HL1, FEAR i must admit i never played, NOLF one very good exception which happened - the biggest problem of NOLF was, that no one has even thought about making 2nd instalment, because its to weak franchise to milk into oblivion... And you know, meybe when not everybody, their mothers, their dogs and hamsters would be publishing cheap junk FPSs, we could see some high-quality TBS from western developers... at least we still have japanese and easter european companies who see big hole in the market full of cash waiting on them to pick it up... Mamoulian War Posted April 14, 2010 Posted April 14, 2010 sorry but more shiny graphics do not count for better quality level design, i've yet to see a single shooter who would beat the simplicity and awesomnes of Unreal Tournament Classic, Quake 2, Quake 3 Arena and Half-Life 1 level design... Morgoth Posted April 14, 2010 Posted April 14, 2010 I'm saying that with modern shooters (in the right hands) you can do more interesting stuff story wise, because tools and technology allow it. And yes, shiny graphics do matter. Nobody wants to play a game with the Quake3 engine these days. Rain makes everything better.

Remember trash like Quake, Doom and Blood (no story, boring level design) and compare it with what Monolith, Valve or Irrational does today. Unfortunately, shooters (and RTS's) also seems to just about the only thing released these days, like 13 a dozen. I don't really get it with X-Com though, because the setting of the first two games is about as bland and generic as you can get. Their selling point is the game mechanics and when you throw those away you have nothing >_ The name seems to be mostly known by the "wargamer" crowd, so I can't imagine that it would be because if brand recognition either. “He who joyfully marches to music in rank and file has already earned my contempt. Tigranes Posted April 14, 2010 Posted April 14, 2010 Exactly. There's really no point here. These guys make good FPSes, they want to make another one. Great! Would be weird if they went "oh we're making a TBS now". But this makes even less sense than, say, a Fallout FPS. You wanna make a shooter with super mutants and pip boys and whatever? OK, some people might not like it but at least you have a reason for it. There's no reason here other than "maybe this will give us a bit more street cred & marketing". Of course they deserve derision and mockery. btw, slowtrain: if you want to tell me why I'm wrong that's cool, I'm not blind to the possibility. But so far I just see a sarcastic trivialisation, so I don't really have a response yet. Niten_Ryu Posted April 14, 2010 Posted April 14, 2010 Last X-com FPS - the infamous X-Com Enforcer from 2001 was total garbage. This don't mean that new game will be just as bad but if you take out the base building and turn based strategy, you'll end up with generic alien FPS. NOLF 2 was a good game but developers who made spinoff sequel to it aka Contract J.A.C.K. should be shot and then dissolved with Body Remover Perfume Let's play Alpha Protocol My misadventures on youtube.

Maybe the Xcom setting was bland and boring, but that's why 2K can make something really good out of it. Remember that there were tons of players that never played Fallout 1/2 or Warcraft 1/2, but were nonetheless completely excided about part 3, despite almost having nothing in common the previous games. So yeah, using an old brand and making something completely new with it does work with the masses. Rain makes everything better.
