RPGmasterBoo Posted January 31, 2010 Posted January 31, 2010 I've been poring over Dune (the book) recently and its been fun to recall games based on it. Wiki says there were basically 2 devs that worked in the universe: 1. Cryo Interactive They made: a) Dune (1) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dune_%28video_game%29 b) Frank Herbert's Dune http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frank_Herbert...28video_game%29 2. Westwood (duh) a) Dune II http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dune_2 b) Dune 2000 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dune_2000 c) Emperor: Battle of Dune http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Emperor:_Battle_for_Dune Which of these games have you played and what were your impressions of em? Guest Slinky Posted January 31, 2010 Posted January 31, 2010 Only Dune I ever have played is Dune 2. I liked the setting and the game, but it pissed me off that you could order around only one unit at a time even back then. And that damn worm always ate half my troops
Pidesco Posted January 31, 2010 Posted January 31, 2010 The first one by Cryo was great, mixing adventure with strategy and management elements. It's the only game of its kind I've ever played. The ones by Westwood are all standard RTSs "My hovercraft is full of eels!" - Hungarian touristI am Dan Quayle of the Romans.I want to tattoo a map of the Netherlands on my nether lands.Heja Sverige!!Everyone should cuffawkle more. The wrench is your friend.

HoonDing Posted January 31, 2010 Posted January 31, 2010 (edited) * Dune 1 is one my favourite games of all time. As stated before, the game uses a unique mix of adventure & strategy... and also has an amazing soundtrack & voice over. It's loosely based on Lynch's movie (which is why in-game Paul Atreides looks like Kyle McLachlan). * Frank Herbert's Dune was the last Cryo game before they went bankrupt, and it shows. It's a bit of a broken game with bad controls & questionable design decisions - the game forces you into melee killing since ammo is ridiculously scarce, but melee killing can only be done from stealth; once the enemy has noticed you it's impossible to even attack the enemy in melee... forcing teh player to rely on the Bene Gesserit Voice power to stun the enemy & then go over to the kill. This makes the game excruciatingly frustrating at times, especially since death means one must play the level again from the beginning. Still, I like this game a lot too (I'm a bit of a Cryo Interactive fanboy), since it's very faithful to the spirit from the book. It even uses hunter-killers & Tleilaxu facedancers in the game. It might be next to impossible to still find this game today, though. * Dune 2000 & Emperor: Battle for Dune are worth playing for the brilliant cutscenes & Harkonnen campaigns alone. I still like a lot of the old school RTS's, much more so than the modern ADHD RTS games. Plus musics from Frank Klepacki = instant win in my books. I'm just not sure how easy the game is to find.

Its next to impossible to find it. Well, promise you'll buy it when it comes to GoG and then go find a cracked version. I'd play it but its Vert- on widescreen and that really puts me off it until someone fixes it up. Guest Slinky Posted January 31, 2010 Posted January 31, 2010 No one in this thread has even attempted to justify piracy. Quite a few people have hinted at it. Off with their heads! So Boo, the guillotine or the old fashioned axe

Purkake Posted January 31, 2010 Posted January 31, 2010 You can find Emperor on both Amazon and Ebay.
RPGmasterBoo Posted January 31, 2010 Author Posted January 31, 2010 (edited) Everyone should play Emperor and the first Dune game. Those are the best of the lot. (even though emperors campaign falters slightly in the middle with too many skirmish type missions). You can find Emperor on both Amazon and Ebay. Did I snuff too much spice or does it say 170$ for Emperor? Edited January 31, 2010 by RPGmasterBoo Imperium Thought for the Day: Even a man who has nothing can still offer his life

Amazon doesn't ship games to Serbia (for unknown reasons) and Paypal doesn't work here either, which renders Ebay useless. HoonDing Posted January 31, 2010 Posted January 31, 2010 It's unbelievable that no company has of yet made a Dune RPG. With the humongous amount of content F. Herbert left behind, practically any story would be possible. Or a Dune FPS... I can easily imagine a Dune game in the same vein as Star Wars: Republic Commando but with a Sardaukar instead. The ending of the words is ALMSIVI.
Purkake Posted January 31, 2010 Posted January 31, 2010 According to this there shouldn't be any problems, at least for DVDs, books, CDs and VHS tapes. They ship just fine to Estonia.

Purkake Posted January 31, 2010 Posted January 31, 2010 Oh well, still most of the people here should be in more accessible places, so there are options, should anyone want to buy it.
kirottu Posted January 31, 2010 Posted January 31, 2010 I think I still have the cd version of Dune lying somewhere and as said it was a nice mix of adventure and strategy. Dune 2 was cool too. Totally relevant: Iron Maiden made a song about Dune. Linky. This post is not to be enjoyed, discussed, or referenced on company time.
Oner Posted February 1, 2010 Posted February 1, 2010 Totally relevant: Iron Maiden made a song about Dune. Linky. It was inspired by the classic science fiction novel Dune by Frank Herbert. However, when Steve Harris requested permission from the author to name the song "Dune" and to use a spoken quotation as the track's intro, his request was met with a stern reply from Frank Herbert's agent: "No. Because Frank Herbert doesn't like rock bands, particularly heavy rock bands, and especially rock bands like Iron Maiden". This statement was backed up with a legal threat, and eventually the song was renamed "To Tame a Land" and released in 1983.Wow, someone felt like being a duche.
