I don't understand the argument for not using DRM. Yes we have establised that it works very poorly, but what is the alternative. 'Prettty please pay us' ?. How are you going to get financing like that. Lets not be naive. No DRM may work for good old games where the development costs are negliable, but it's here to stay, and going without it is not a real option.

Wait, DRM works? How?

90% of the games dont even make it to the end of the first week uncracked. Something wrong right there.

Plus these protection schemes cost money raising the end cost of the game. Yet they dont do squat except annoy people.

I fail to see the logic.

Piracy won't go away, and can't really be stopped. In the never ending crusade against it the only casualty is the poor sod who bought the game. That's really not a desirable outcome is it?

How do they work for you? they increase your enjoyment of the game or what?

A person not inclined to copy a game won't do so even if it has no protection at all. Someone who actually wants to copy the game will do so regardless of the protection that's on it.

They make the developers lose less money than they would have otherwise. DRM doesn't work very well, but it's still better than giving the games away.

This is not rocket science, honestly, you seem to be stuck in the same argument. We have already established that DRM has lots of drawbacks, now lets move on. What is the alternative ?.

Who mentioned giving anything away? A simple dic...disk check and a serial work well enough to prevent basic copying, and provide no hassle to the user. Why not stick to that?

Online activations, various registrations and memberships, SecuROM etc. have all been busted by pirates, why insist on them when they don't work?

Personally I'm even inclined to think that rival publishers play a part in cracking games, just to undermine the competition.

I think what Bio has been doing is a good idea. Reward people who buy the game, rather than treat them like criminals. An extra mission and NPC is a good incentive for people who like the game to buy it.

And a cd-check will take care of anyone who is technically inept enough to not be able to apply a crack. Because the process for the person pirating the game is the same regardless if the game has a disc check or more convoluted versions.

So when you need and buy a silk t-shirt and it rips, you go back and buy a more expensive patchwork shirt, and when that rips, you get some rags with a color that makes everyone's eyes bleed because "there's no alternative"?

You do know that the shirt analogy is a really bad one rigth. If you could magically duplicate shirts at no cost we would be getting somewhere.

I count CD check in the DRM category, don't you guys ?

I don't. I started gaming with consoles, and you always had to have a cartridge/disk in the machine to play the game. So, for me, disk-checks are par for the course.

I sinply won't play or buy any game that uses this sort of DRM. Its gone beyond the limit of what I find acceptable.

The alternative is a balance between what works and what pisses of the consumer for no extra benefit.

Disk checks work and are fairly seamless. Online activations do not - they're cracked as easily as disk checks, so no difference for downloaders, yet they annoy paying customers.

Modern-day draconian DRM doesn't seem targetted at downloaders at all, rather people who want to buy and sell second-hand games. Something they're legally entitled to do I might add.

PIRACY IS COPYRIGHT INFRINGEMENT!

There, fixed it for you...

Which is theft, what is your point?

Nightshape, by the way, is a person who works on games. When the people creating the games tell you piracy is theft, that would seem to be a fairly authoritative person on the matter.

It isn't a complicated scenario. If you want games to exist, you need to pay for them. There are costs involved that need to be covered somehow. Every time someone pirates a game, they are ignoring the fact that someone spent years on that software and deserves to be compensated for their effort.

Posted

This. DRMs are more of a means to not completely own something you've already paid for.

Also, pirating for protest is stupid because it builds up the hype and brings more sales.

Stealing the game off the shelf, now there's a real challenge.

As has already been established, you don't need DRM for Law abiding citizens, as they are already paying for the games. Also established, DRM doesn't function as any sort of barrier for pirates. So DRM fails at it's intended purpose of preventing piracy, and your counterargument is that if we stop using it people will stop paying for games? There's a logical fallacy right in the center of your argument.

But for all of us, there will come a point where it does matter, and it's gonna be like having a miniature suit-head shoving sticks up your butt all the time. - Tigranes

Aren't you a bit overreacting?

No... I am happy that there are still games without retarded **** like UbiSoft's DRM... Last year i spent about 1000-1100EUR on computer/console entertainment, i am planning to spent aproximately same amount this year... I know i am only 1 gamer, but it makes me warm inside when i think, that Ubi and EA (and any other company which games require Steam to work) will never touch any of these money spent...
