AlphaPro Posted July 23, 2009 Posted July 23, 2009 Hey, from the trailers and website, I could only find 4 hubs. Moscow, Saudi Arabia,Taipei and Rome. This doesn't seem like a large amount of gameplay, so i was wondering if these are the only hubs, and, if they are, approximately how many missions will be in each? Thanks, and the game looks great. build a man a fire and he will be warm for a day, but set a man on fire and he'll be warm for the rest of his life.
WILL THE ALMIGHTY Posted July 23, 2009 Posted July 23, 2009 Remember KotOR 1 and 2 basically only had 4 planets/hubs that you could explore at will. I'm guessing there are some other settings that are more linear, in the beginning of the game. I can't really confirm it, though. "Alright, I've been thinking. When life gives you lemons, don't make lemonade - make life take the lemons back! Get mad! I don't want your damn lemons, what am I supposed to do with these? Demand to see life's manager. Make life rue the day it thought it could give Cave Johnson lemons. Do you know who I am? I'm the man who's gonna burn your house down! With the lemons. I'm going to to get my engineers to invent a combustible lemon that burns your house down!"

There are probably also some endgame areas that won't be disclosed until we get our hands on the game. (Villain's tropical island lair? Infiltrate corrupt agency HQ back in the States? Run off with your dame of choice to Rio?)
AlphaPro Posted July 23, 2009 Author Posted July 23, 2009 It just seems like it wont take me very long. It worked for KOTOR 1 and 2 because you freeroamed and it took a while to get from one area of a hub to anoother. In AP, you have a safe house, then go on semi-linear missions, then warp back to your safe house. Say there are 20 missions per hub, thats 80 alltogether, it took Matthew Rorie 10 minutes to complete a moscow mission, So thats six in 1 hour, 80 divided by 6 is 13 hours of gameplay. Add two for tutorial and end missions, thats 15 hours. I dont know, it just seems like it will be kinda short with 4 hubs, even with the replayability. Eitherway, ill still be pickin it up on release day. build a man a fire and he will be warm for a day, but set a man on fire and he'll be warm for the rest of his life.

AlphaPro Posted July 23, 2009 Author Posted July 23, 2009 Im only roughly going by the only full mission ive seen, which was the global conspiracy walkthrough, which took ~10 minutes. There will definitely be some longer missions, but im guessing some of the non-shooting missions will be considerably shorter as well. build a man a fire and he will be warm for a day, but set a man on fire and he'll be warm for the rest of his life.

Also consider that they were running through that mission for the hundredth time, knowing where all the enemies and objectives were, and not particularly careful about taking damage. A more careful, exploratory first run will take us much longer.

I get full on shotguns and toughness, a couple on SMGs and martial arts. forget the rest and run and gun, then skip the optional boss fight. build a man a fire and he will be warm for a day, but set a man on fire and he'll be warm for the rest of his life.
Nigel Posted July 23, 2009 Posted July 23, 2009 (edited) Mass Effect only had one. Feros and Noveria are hubs too. I'm not sure we have a full sense of how the game will be structured. Also judging from Kotor2, Obsidian can craft some really long conversations, which I'm actually looking forward to. *fingers crossed* Edited July 23, 2009 by Nigel
Guest Posted July 23, 2009 Posted July 23, 2009 Mass Effect only had one. Feros and Noveria are hubs too. Not sure how you get that. Because they had stores? That hardly makes them "hubs".

But i don't see how you can have 20 minutes of cutscenes and timed responses. Itll feel like one long cutscene and not a mission. build a man a fire and he will be warm for a day, but set a man on fire and he'll be warm for the rest of his life.

What, no hubs set in an English speaking Western country? Oh great. Heck, do it in New Zealand or Canada for all I care, but at least one would be nice.

Not enough games take place there. "Alright, I've been thinking. When life gives you lemons, don't make lemonade - make life take the lemons back! Get mad! Nigel Posted July 23, 2009 Posted July 23, 2009 Feros and Noveria are hubs too. Not sure how you get that. Because they had stores? That hardly makes them "hubs". And because they had multiple missions. Anywhere you could dock your ship was a hub in Mass Effect, if we're using Kotor as a reference. Alpha Protocol doesn't look as if it diverges from this model.

Matthew Rorie Posted July 23, 2009 Posted July 23, 2009 You start with the tutorial and Saudi Arabia, then you have the choice to visit Rome, Taipei, and Moscow in any order you like. Then you go into the endgame. Our gameplay estimate is 20-25 hours. Matthew Rorie
Oner Posted July 23, 2009 Posted July 23, 2009 Out of curiosity: How did this hub centric gameplay get so popular with Obs (and Bioware) instead of the more linear ones? Nigel Posted July 24, 2009 Posted July 24, 2009 Out of curiosity: How did this hub centric gameplay get so popular with Obs (and Bioware) instead of the more linear ones? They didn't always use hubs? I haven't played any Bioware or Obsidian (when they were Black Isle or whatever) games prior to Kotor so I don't know of any other way one of their games could be. The earliest hub game I remember playing is Secret of Monkey Island 2 so maybe they picked it up from LucasArts through Kotor. I can't imagine that they hadn't used it before though.

Well Fallouts were open world, but otherwise, I don't think they did, no*. Like in Torment, 1/3rd of the game took place in Sigil, which had several maps but it wasn't a hub. The maps weren't areas with different subplots that furthered the main plot a little bit. In NwN you had Neverwinter with 3-4 areas each with a spell component and a reason for local disorder. *Thinking about it, every Bio that comes to my mind was hub based, except the open world BGs. To be on topic: will there be small sub areas, like the Museum or the Mansions in VtM: Bloodlines? For instance, Mike gets some info in Moscow, and decides to do a quick break in into the Pentagon? mkreku Posted July 24, 2009 Posted July 24, 2009 Well Fallouts were open world... But were they really? There wasn't a world you could explore. There was an overland map where you could click on destinations and then the game let you watch a small dot crawl slowly across that immobile map until you either had a random encounter or ended up at your destination. You never really got to experience a world. I actually think of the overland map in Fallout and Fallout 2 as more of a hub than an open world. Fallout 3, on the other hand, was open world.
