It might just be on hold, which means there's always the hope it will be released.

We can hope, but Obsidz can't just wait around for AP to be released and the tea leaves to predict Aliens' fate. They'll be working on something new (as evidenced by the job listings) and depending on how things turn out they might have to leave Aliens by the wayside even if resuming production is a possibility.

Those concepts look incredible! :o Never saw them before! Really hope this game is not cancelled :aiee:

If Sega had any intention of allowing this game to resurface again, you'd think that former Obsidian employees wouldn't be able to post concept art for the game due to legal reasons.

I apologize for my tone, but seeing these pieces of awesome concept art has made me extremely bitter over this whole deal all of a sudden. God DAMMIT I want to play this game, but I probably never will.

Zimmermann's concept arts for the game has been deleted from his website and his LinkedIn profile has been modified too.

Moar info. to add in:

 

-Its a squad based third person action game.

 

-Weapons from Aliens will make a return. Smart guns, Pulse rifles, Sentry guns. Additional weapons like magnetic door bomb is also available as well as an array of pistols.

 

-Melee combat may be revolved using stun prod(or items similar to a Cattle prod) based on a statement by J.E hinted regarding melee. Makes sense since its the only way to stun and kill it from distance without being acid splashed.

 

-Combat possibly also revolves around stress/fear in consideration based on an old J.E interview discussing about combat mechanics.

 

-No romance, but there would be interxeno sexual tensions with a host and a face hugger in the story.

 

-There will be a character cutomization creation with a third party ware that Mass Effects used, FaceFX.

 

-Your character starts out as an agent(?) based on the concept 3D file names. You can choose male or female. Skin tone colors are already available in form of generic asian, caucasian, black and hispanic skin tone color instead of palettes.

 

-Storyline was worked/collaborated loosely together with GearBox to maintain consistency in the overlapping time events as well as maybe putting in references with each other's story in-game.

 

-Setting seems to be on a hostile environment planet with deep land crevasses with molten lava in it.

 

-Plot possibly begins revolving around a crashed Weyland Yutani ship followed by Weyland's research base.

 

-Based on the concept arts, gamepaly possibly constrained on one planet, the research base or the areas nearby the base itself.

 

Will find links, quotes for the respective sources when I'm free. Most of them are based on memory of the past 3 years so it may be inaccurate.

100% of the time when a game is rumored to be canceled and its NOT , the developer comes out almost immediately to say its still in production.

 

this has not happened with EITHER of the aliens titles.

 

and lots of layoffs from both compaines is not exactly helping the idea that these games are still in production.

 

Sega is just trying to sweep these two games under the rug , that would explain why all the concept art is dissappearing.

 

 

BTW , can somebody explain to me how putting a game on "hold" is even possible?

 

once a developer starts on a new project there will be no incentive to return back to the old ones.

 

And if they DONT start a new project said developer goes out of buisness

I hate FALSE hope , when you have hope for things like this when all the info in the world is pointing directly at the games cancellation , and you STILL believe its fine.....

Randy talked to Shacknews and said Aliens: CM is NOT canned. And I hope this RPG is still alive too.

Even if its not canned and merely delayed, its unlikely to continue production by the same company. Reasons are:

 

-A stalled game production means a cut off from funding the people making the game. This means excess overhead cost for Obsidian if they choose to hold onto a project that has no funding at all, hence the result of laying off the mostly confirmedd 20 people to avoid this problem. Otherwise they would end up in the same situation as Ensemble Studios which closed down due to overhead cost issues.

 

-To fill up the vacuum from the stalled project, Obsidian will have to take up a new project in its place to ensure the company remains floating. New project would mean another investment of 2 - 3 years of production in queue before another project can be pursued/repursued again. I doubt either company are willing to wait for that long again, hence the other rumour concerning of hiring another development team to pick up what was left of the Aliens games to continue production.

 

Sure, there is a possibility that Obsidian could continue the Aliens RPG after the release of AP IF they have available free schedules to pursue the project(Since they are at present making an unannounced console RPG), but the problem remains Obsidian will have to rebuild their development team again after laying off 20 people with which some of them were holding key positions like lead artists and senior engine/graphics programmer. So there will be further delays and even increased costs in production values due to the reshuffling and rehiring of team, a factor that Sega may be reluctant to pursue.

 

The bottom line is now a matter of scheduling conflicts and reorganizing on Obsidian's part and the will for reinvestment on Sega's part.
