They just posted this up a couple minutes ago. Source says that the Aliens RPG has been cancelled and that Obsidian has laid off 20 workers. No comment from any of the companies involved yet.

Not on these boards. SEGA are the ones who'll make the announcement, either confirming or denying the rumor.

Donkey balls. Sega used to praise Obsidian about their creativity and their progress, and why would they suddenly cancel such a high-profil title?

1) Considering Obsidian is still hiring people for the Aliens RPG game.

 

2) If the tech demo J.E reaccounted back then was as impressive as he described, Sega is too crazy to cancel the game.

 

3) Cancelling a game supposedly to be released on this year after 2+ years of production is a wasted resource.

 

Mind boggling.

What do they do with 3/4 finished games? Just hang onto them hoping the project will be recuscitated or when the "plug is pulled" they are obligated to give whatever they have to SEGA?

Kotaku's source isn't exactly reliable. Remember Aliens Colonial Marines rumour?

 

However, Seganerd's rumour source tends to be much more accurate. Maybe the folks there could give some news or sort on their perspective.

Argh, this can't be true... This game looks so damn interesting and now... No, it's not true

OTOH, Sega announced some 600 staff layoffs, reduction of R&D spending and some closures of studios and cancellation of projects. Still, I think the Kotaku news are bollocks.

Stupid Sonic Games. Werewolf sonic and now a Sonic wielding a sword. Those games never got cancelled.

 

Now the Aliens franchises cancelled? That doesn't make any inch of sense.

 

Even more mind boggling is that Sega cancelled the game just to make another AvP game that's out next year. MIND BOGGLING!

We've also been told that Obsidian, no longer working on the Sega project, laid off more than 20 people last night. With lack of official confirmation from anyone at the two companies involved, take this with a grain of salt.

 

Aliens Roleplaying Game was a title that Obsidian said would be "instilled with the action of Aliens and the terror of Alien" and take place in the "heart of science fiction horror." The title was under development for the PC, Playstation 3 and Xbox 360.

 

Obsidian, located in Irvine, first worked on Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic II: The Sith Lords. They also created a number of Neverwinter Nights 2 expansion packs.

 

In a thread on the still-active forums for the Aliens Roleplaying Game, a developer said earlier this week that they would like to show the game at E3 or the New York Comic Con but that it was up to Sega.

 

We've also heard that the future of Gearbox-developed Aliens: Colonial Marines is also in doubt, with Sega reviewing the title. Of course, this is a rumor that has surfaced before.

 

The rumors come the day after Sega announced that a new Aliens vs. Predator game coming out in early 2010. In that announcement Sega said they had "strategically updated the release of the other upcoming Aliens titles currently in development within its portfolio."

 

"The innovative new AvP game presents an exciting opportunity for us," CEO of SEGA West, Naoya Tsurumi, said at the time. "It represents a fantastic addition to our growing Aliens franchise and the reinvention of one of gaming's most cherished iconic titles. By adjusting the release of our other Aliens titles to accommodate it, SEGA will ensure that every title lives up to the high expectations of Aliens and AvP fans."

 

Emails to Sega, Obsidian and Gearbox have not yet been returned.

 

Update: Sega just replied saying they "do not respond to speculation or rumor questions."

It seems that aliens was a troubled project in that they were having trouble finding a direction for it. The game was coming along and getting close; however, they still had a bit to go to become really fun / polished (always the hardest part =( )

Aliens now can be only saved by putting Sonic-Aliens into it.
