Well there's an idea, the aliens dont actually kill everybody, they capture some for impregnation. So an NPC could be captured, and the PC has a dilemma - to save him or not. If he does save him at great personal risk, he gets influence, unique skill whatever if he doesn't the NPC returns as a full grown drone to hunt him (some trinket that ends up on the aliens body by mistake and shows him to be the NPC)...

(So you permadeath, except if the player has grown attached to the NPC enough to save him and the potential death of the NPC is integrated into the storyline)

Permadeath should be a requirement.
I like permadeath, but it's pretty much an abandoned game mechanic. People just reload, which kinda defeats the point, right?

And I'm not sure it's feasible to create enough characters that are good enough for the playet to care about if the NPC pool is to be large enough to have "disposable" characters...

You mean for party based games. Permadeath is still in other games. Frankly I don't see how you could achieve the level of intensity needed with immortal squad members, it kind of neuters the whole atmosphere of survival. Permadeath makes you care about even the most hopeless mope of an NPC, Immortal and unkickable NPCs generate a slow festering hatred.

That is all.

On the other hand, how could you possibly have character development and complex interaction for hundreds of spent colonial marines. It's a bit of a conundrum.

This may work well in a film, but are there even thoughts to establish some similar desperate situations in the game? This kinda is contradicting, because in RPGs you usually grow the ability of your character, thus also want to feel more powerful. How do the Aliens adapt to this progress?

You don't really need to grow the ability of your character, do you?

Maybe just growing braver and less prone to panicking, less inclined to involuntarily do counterproductive things (which people often do when panicking). Like fleeing headlong into the egg chamber :)

You can still give the player the feeling of becoming more "powerful" through the distribution of l00t ®, enabling of defensive measures, restore power to doors/turrets etc. which helps you survive another 30-60 minutes (until out of battery, ammo whatever).

I hope it suffices to say that I think traditional RPG progression (character and equipment) works well in the Alien/Aliens setting.

This is probably one of the best things I've heard about the Aliens RPG so far.

I FON'T THINK IT MAKES MUCH SENSE TO RUN AORUND TALKING TO A SHIP FULL OF ALIENS THANKS.

How do you expect to start a romance unless you talk to them?

What kind of squad control, if any, will Aliens have?

Wait, some sort of minigames crap AGAIN? I'm sick of this sort of drivel in Obsidian games.

Man, I wish they'd make games more like Bioware of Bethdesia, those are REAL devs.

Love at first sight

Can my female space marine romance an Alien queen and turn her to good? Or at least Chaotic Neutral?

Look, I'm all for sexual equality, but I don't think it's fair to add a lesbian romance unless there is a straight one, too. I want my character, whom I have named Flash Gordon, to be able to romance the Alien queen also.

You will be playing Busta Rhymes and will control a Flipmode Squad.

To get back on topic: Will crates be romanceable characters?

I'm all for that, but you should rename your character Flesh Gordon. And you have to have his hairstyle too.

I'm weary about a companion cube romance as the last one I had ended poorly. Now that I think about it, having to toss my beloved in a firey pit sounds very Obsidianish. Was Chris Avallone an uncredited writer in Portal?

Having been subjected to Halloween: Resurrection, I take this as confirmation that there is no permadeath in the game? Dude died like three times at the hands of Michael Myers and kept coming back.

I cannot - yet I must. How do you calculate that? At what point on the graph do "must" and "cannot" meet? Yet I must - but I cannot! ~ Ro-Man

I have just recently played Mass effect and was pleasantly suprised by the depth of exploration and the graphic design of the levels. The APC in MASS EFFECT even looked like one of Sid Meads original concept drawings of the Aliens APC. In Mass Effect I could walk around the Normandy space ship and explore it. I could also talk to crew members. It would be good if off duty marines could mingle and trash talk to eachother. Mass effects graphics were excellent. I'm sure obsidian will expect nothing less from the aliens RPG. In mass effect you could explore countless worlds and go on many missions. It will be interesting if we could explore LV-426, Fury161, Gateway Station, Earth and whatever other worlds Obsidian dreams up. How do you think the gameplay should be? I prefer a 3rd person Gears of war style with optional 1st person mode. It alows you to see more of the environment and your character. I don't want Aliens to be just like Mass effect but I do thing some of its traits would be helpful. Whats you opinion of what the Aliens RPG should play like. Obsidian can't please every gamer, but whatever they develope should be the best it can be. This is Aliens. Its not just a game, its a scifi legend.

Well, Aliens can use humans to reproduce, just like a certain alien allegedly attempts to do in Mass Effect! :(
