I don't know if anyone has done this yet but these are the "hero angles" in Cameron's Aliens. I would expect any video game to atleast match these in terms of cinematographical feel.

These screencaptures have been adjusted slightly from DVD film. Where in motion video you can get away with very dark lighting as the objects are continually in motion, in still frame you cannot. So these have been adjusted for contrast (no luminance, colour warmth or histography has been altered). So they still have that bizzare surreal cold blue tint that Cameron employed in the film. But details are slightly more pronounced.

These are for illustration. In motion, i.e. in game, the visuals should be a few shades darker.

wait what, "hero angle"?

I've never heard of that kind of camera angle. I mean, many of those pics feature different camera angles, there's at least one tilted one too.

How can it be a no ob build. It has PROVEN effective. I dare you to show your builds and I will tear you apart in an arugment about how these builds will won them.

I think we got the idea after the first 1 or 2 screenshots.

Meh, only unifying thing in (most of) those angles seem to be height of camera placement. It is pretty much same, but otherwise...

Cameron's shooting for Aliens was groundbreaking for it's time, but I wouldn't call it unique. Practically everything is handheld today. What was new about it was the way he shot motion, thats how he was able to get the animatronics to look so convincing.

That is all.

Yeah, slightly below head height. Is that a "hero angle"?

Yeah, slightly below head height. Is that a "hero angle"?

And of course there are many shots where not even that is true.

What the heck is "hero angle"?

Your all welcome by the way for the time I took to capture those, enhance them one by one and post them for your viewing pleasure.

Hero angles are (sharp) still frames with good composition from the final cut that capture the previsualised storyboard for that scene. They have nothing to do with Cameron.

who did the story boards then and do you have any that we can compare to?

Yeah, way to go Laozi. Encourage him to post some more images, see if he can crash the boards.

I don't think a crpg needs cinemagraphical feel. It needs solid gameplay.

Notice how I can belittle your beliefs without calling you names. It's a useful skill to have particularly where you aren't allowed to call people names. It's a mistake to get too drawn in/worked up. I mean it's not life or death, it's just two guys posting their thoughts on a message board. If it were personal or face to face all the usual restraints would be in place, and we would never have reached this place in the first place. Try to remember that.

It certainly wouldn't hurt with a cinematographical feel, although personally I by far prefer "Alien" over "Aliens" as a reference. After all, RPGs focus on telling a story, and both movies and games must utilize every tool at their disposal to convey feelings and atmosphere to the viewer/ player. I don't want to equate movies with games, but 3D games and movies have a lot in common and it would be a mistake to forget that.

You're the one failing before you tell us what it is needed for

Why can't we have both?

Imagine if Mass Effect actually has a refined gameplay.

If you're going to aim for cinematic at least get some director who knows jack about camera angles, pacing, rhytm of the scene and angle changes and beauty of image composition

Unfortunately when not even most of the movie directors - even some that are good - don't know **** about all this...

Cinematics in Mass Effect were on level of your stereotypical B scifi flick or Bay movie

Of course I know it is unrealistic to except game feature Bergmanesque cutscenes instead of your generic Hollywood but... *sigh*

You must have sufficient skills at least in PRaT (Pace, Rhythm, and Timing) before going for cinematic feel in games. Unfortunately not even too many directors know how to effectively use PRaT (and if you're going to add image compositions, interesting and vivid camera angles and overall cinematography directors that have mastered this can be counted with my own ten fingers... *heavy sigh* )

Really, I take no cutscenes over Your Generic Hollywood Crap under any circumstances

Random n00b, Laozi,

From what I understand you do not appreciate that I captured, enhanced and posted those images.

I understand that you would have preferred if I had not posted this topic am I correct?

You could've just cropped them smaller

How are those from the DVD? The resolution is significantly larger than an SD set. It's PAL vertical res, but the horizontal is 304 pixels extra.

"Show me a man who "plays fair" and I'll show you a very talented cheater."

Yes, the images are rather big. But that's no reason for some of us to give a reenactment of middle school. We've got some good discussion about camera techniques and cinematography regarding Aliens on here, so let's keep it to that. Ja?
