Metal Gear!

well in about a week MGS4 will be arriving on PS3's here in the US (a cheaper 80 gig bundle is being offered with the game at 499). I is drooling over it. figured I might as well preempt the inevitable thread by making this one. Supposedly the game will contain at least 3 90 minute cutscenes for the players viewing pleasure (although that is unconfirmed.) And it might have a LENGTHY install time on your PS3.

btw ran across this.

Stupid exclusives :(

Original MGS for psone is still among my all-time favourite games. It was genious game on many fronts.

Psycho Mantis fight ftw

edit: Not to say MGS2 and 3 were nothing but awesomeness incarnations, but Raiden was a ****

Edited by Xard

How can it be a no ob build. It has PROVEN effective. I dare you to show your builds and I will tear you apart in an arugment about how these builds will won them.

As our resident self-proclaimed biggest Metal Gear fan on these forums, I have to say: Yeehaw.

Who wants some spoilers? I won't post any, but I've got a couple doozies. Not all publications got the word on what to be hush about and some places have broken street dates.

Also, the 90 minute cutscene thing originated with EDGE magazine and has been refuted by the Gamepro reviewer. What I'm thinking is that either it's an exaggeration (IE, he didn't count, that's just his way of saying it seemed long) or he's counting closely spaced cutscenes as one (which, if they're close enough is a completely reasonable thing to do).

Edit: MGS3 Secret Theater was awesome.

Thank god for Youtube since I don't have the Subsistence second disc. Edited by Tale

I'm also annoyed that the Gamestop I pre-ordered the LE at (I had no choice, only Gamestop has the LE :bat: ) won't be having a midnight launch.

Lack of love in this forum is disturbing

Go get copy of MGS2 - it is awesome game that gets so postmodern one can't help but think it is twenty years ahead its time if games are considered as artform

Seriously, it is utter mind****

It also features a protagonist so annoying that he rivals Final Fantasy X's Tidus.

But it's still a good game.

Another complaint I can level at it is that a good and exciting ending is marred by further elaboration that gets overly philosophical to the point that it gets lost in its own train of thought. But, I think it has the best villain characters of the series.

I personally prefer 3. For gameplay, for pacing, for being less convoluted, for the boss fights, though not the boss characters (except The Boss).

Oh yeah, ****ing Raiden

...only reason why MGS3 and MGS1 kicks it ass

But MGS2 must be experienced for sheer mind**** it starts to unleash further the game progresses

And I'm not talking about "oh **** I didn't saw this one coming" or "wtf is this rapid montage **** going on my screen", it goes way to the bonker land.

WHY ARE YOU PLAYING THIS GAME

DO YOU SOMETIMES FEEL LIKE WANTING TO KILL SOMEONE

DO YOU EXIST

WHAT IS REALITY

WHY DO YOU PLAY GAMEZ

WAT DO Y00 WANT

It is game version of Neon Genesis Evangelion or Serial Experiments Lain, perhaps more the latter (though it lacks mechs). :p

...needless to say with my elementary school english (or when did MGS2 initially come out anyway, 2001?) it was so confusing only reason I continued to play was that I got that badass sword to slice people with around that part of game :p

That's what I've been hearing. I'm personally gonna buy it as soon as the current generation of games stop raping my wallet.

If you're in the US, you should be able to find Metal Gear Solid: The Essential Collection for $30.

I'm not. You're also assuming that I have a PS2. :p

My brother has one that I could steal borrow though, so I could be persuaded to play it on a console instead of the PC, if you have any arguments for it. I guess I should also check for any serious Vista compatibility issues.

Moatiallita, I take you haven't played MGS2 then :p

So, uhh, reviews

MGS1 -> MGS3 -> MGS2

Note that qualitywise these are nigh-identical so the little things make up for this order

MGS1: It has the best story and atmosphere. The base of MGS gameplay was laid here and it hasn't considerably changed after this title. Great gameplay (like in them all) and (for psone) good graphics and atmosphere. The story makes it my favourite. Great cast of characters too. From bosses Psycho Mantis is unforgetable, same with The Raven, Sniper Wolf, Ninja etc. And in any way you viewit fist fight with Liquid Sanke on top of Metal Gear was badass.

That and it has nostalgic value like no other game for me minus Red Alert 2

MGS 2: Without doubt it was most anticipated PS2 title. It hones and smoothens the few gameplay falws original had and adds one big improvement - you can aim from first person with other guns in addition to sniper rifle. Yay! Like its predecessor it is defined by great gameplay, great characters and writing.

However MGS2 is also most flawed of the bunch - it has many ridiculously long cutscenes. And I mean really, really long cutscenes. And instead of Mr Badass himself Solid Snake we get to play as sissy prettyboy Raiden for most of the game (apart from Tanker Episode in the beginning of game). Though he didn't annoy me half as much he did some other people.

Boss fights weren't as good as in MGS1 (or in MGS3) but boss characters themselves were awesome. I share Tale's view that MGS2 has best Big Bad Evil Guy.

MGS2 for its flaws is still most intriguing and unique game of the bunch. In fact MGS2 is one of a kind and when arguing are games art or not MGS2 is one of the best weapons for the "yes it is art" faction. Like I said before it is twenty years ahead its time in some ways. Since I can't sum it up on my own:

Metal Gear Solid 2 was not quite as popular, but was hugely anticipated. While despised by the general population for its controversial plot-twists and debilitating main character switcheroo (Solid Snake had become a true meme by then, with his shamelessly badass personality and distinctive, growling voice), it sold extremely well and became a cult success amongst the sort of people who enjoyed the ending of Neon Genesis Evangelion - and is even used to explain meme theory in some serious institutions.

This one is a surreal No Fourth Wall postmodernist rampage through the relationship between game and player, which is, depending on who you ask, a landmark in gaming and hugely ahead of its time, or a self-absorbed rant which made no sense and cried for an editor. (There is no middle ground for this one. Despite the snark, this editor is in the first category.) On a more basic level, it centred around Raiden, a Deconstruction of the You Suck character type, as well as the Bishonen stereotype, and his attempt to prevent a group of terrorists from blowing up a cleaning plant on the ocean. But everything gets eerily similar to Raiden's VR training, based on Snake's previous missions, and increasingly surreal, until he's forced to question how much of what he's experiencing is real. And then it gets more complicated. Warning - it has a doozy of a Gainax Ending.

I guess bolded parts might be reason why I like it so much :p

Anyway, enough on MGS2

MGS3:

As a game MGS3 is without doubt best of the series. It's gameplay is best, it has a lot better pacing, badass Snake returns (well, sorta) as main character and it has fantastic 60's atmosphere all over it.

If you simply want awesome game get MGS3, then other two. If you want something unlike any other game get MGS2, then other two. If you want to be cool get MGS1, then the other two

Moatiallita, I take you haven't played MGS2 then -_-

I haven't no. I doubt that I'll be as excited as you as I wasn't too awed by the "philosophy" of MGS1 and have heard that 2 is worse, so I'm kinda awaiting a bull**** overload so that I can concentrate on the gameplay and the narrative, which is incidentially the high-points of MGS1

I personally liked mgs2 more than 3 simply because 2 had less jumping to another screen to do somthing (like work camo and food and the freaking cure screen).

Well, if you at all care about being surprised by MGS4, try to stick to this forum and any other relatively small forums that you visit. Anything with a large impersonal membership will be bombarbed by serious spoilers over the next week. I've avoided all the most serious ones, though I do know two minor bits that don't bother me.

Wait what, MGS1 had philosophy? :ermm:

No, only MGS2 of these is only philosophical work. Maybe first one throwed some typical japanese quasiphilosophy but no, it wasn't philosophical work per se.

Tale, can you tell

if Snake is really going to die? I'd guess so since Kojima wants to finally end his series

Well MGS1 had more philosophy about the self and the will to live (How to beat foxdie? Live! IIRC)

MGS2 was about the nature of society.

MGS3 was just a cook fest. Ocelot Meowing included.

I just wonder what would have happened if we had dealt with ADAM instead of EVA in MGS3.

Ironically, the Raiden in the Japanese version of MGS 2 comes across more manly.

The reason? Voice acting makes a whole lot of difference.

Yeah, they directed Quinton Flynn to be too energetic. Also, everything sounds better when you have absolutely no familiarity with the subtleties of that language's inflections.

Wait what, MGS1 had philosophy? o:)

You'll find MGS1 has something of an anti-deterministic message. It was specifically that your life and what you're capable of isn't pre-ordained. Mostly specific to genetics, but Foxdie was a broader application of it.

Tale, can you tell

if Snake is really going to die? I'd guess so since Kojima wants to finally end his series

Yes.
