For the life of me I can't remember if it's been confirmed or not if this game will be first-person or third or a combo of both?

After seeing this BBCNews article about the US Army building real robo-suits, I started thinking that I'd like my character to have at least one scene where I get to jump into a robo-suit, either for combat or travel/task purposes - like jumping into cars in shooters - but it'd be "cooler" in 1st person.

But then we'd have to decide whether the robo-suit should be designed after the Aliens one, or the "real life" one.

Seriously...if done right, I think it'd be cool.

Maybe my whole party could wear robo-suits! ... only .... don't make them "dance", please.

Still gaming with my 9900k/2080ti/32 ram. One day I suppose a game may inspire me to finally upgrade. Maybe.

GUNDAAAAAAAAAAAAM!

Seriously, if Obs could integrate it nicely in artistic manner, why not.

I sure hope it's 3rd - i dunno how an RPG would work in 1st person.

Check out my KOTOR fan vids on YouTube. And no, they're not of legos.

What? You mean like Daggerfall, Wizardry, Might and Magic, Lands of Lore etc and so forth?

I never realized that there was a point of view requirement attached to a crpg.

Notice how I can belittle your beliefs without calling you names. It's a useful skill to have particularly where you aren't allowed to call people names. It's a mistake to get too drawn in/worked up. I mean it's not life or death, it's just two guys posting their thoughts on a message board. If it were personal or face to face all the usual restraints would be in place, and we would never have reached this place in the first place. Try to remember that.

I'll pass on that. I thought that final battle between Ripley in her loader suit and the alien queen was the dumbest part of the whole movie. All that punching of the alien queen should have ripped her skin open at some point and caused acid to spray all over an immobile Ripley. It was just too goofy.

I guess power armor of some sort would be OK on a limited scale. It would need to be acid proof though otherwise its just like wearing really heavy tissue paper.

In the old mech thread (http://forums.obsidianent.com/index.php?showtopic=48822&st=0&p=826596entry826596) J.E Sawyer was quoted as saying 'I own Steel Battalion so I hope that makes my opinion on mechs clear.'

This is a good sign.

As long as it doesn't go down the Silent Storm path of power armor implementation.

There are good first-person RPGs and CRPGs. :o

You mean like Bloodlines, Deus Ex, and potentially System Shock and NOLF?

Hehe, it was goofy, but I loved it. :o

But as I said, it doesn't have to be actual combat. Perhaps a puzzle-task requires wearing the robo-suit to complete, or something else more creative/fun than I could come up with.

And I like 1st person RPG's if they're done right. It just depends. With today's 3D engines, I often at least like the option to be able to zoom into first person for the closer view and more intimate 'moving thru the world' feel.

That's a good point. I hadn't thought about the potential for using the loader suit in a non-combat way. THat's what I get for just thinking of crpgs these days as mostly about fighting enemies. So amending my earlier statement, yes, it could definitely have a lot of interesting possiblities as a problem solving or even exploration tool.

The only problem I have with first person crpgs is that they seem difficult to implement a party system in. I don't know why that is, but unless you go with a firs person interface for a whole party like WIzardry and Might and Magic, I think a party would be hard to pull off in a first person game. For just a lone player character with maybe the odd companion or two from time, first person appears to work great.

When I think about a robo-suit in non-combat terms, my mind automatically goes back to the deep-sea portions of KOTOR. I don't see how you could make moving around in a restrictive suit for the purposes of puzzle-solving any more immediately satisfying than that, and those parts of KOTOR were just tedious.

That's exact;y what I thought of. What's the use of big robo-suits if not for bashin' ****?

Wow, state a personal hope - notice how I worded my statement - and prepare to get your *ss chewed. I stated that I HOPE it's 3rd person, because I've personally never played an RPG that wasn't 3rd person (except Oblivion, which was both 1st & 3rd). I know I'm not as "hardcore" as a lot of you, but goodness. People around here really like to argue.

SOrry. Didn't mean to come across harsh. It is just that there are so many great first person crpgs.

I'm not sure I want to see robo suits in other instances than NPCs moving boxes around. The approach they took in AvP2 made combat suits feel pretty out of place and didn't really add anything to the game. It also gave the player a sense of "safety" that went against the feeling of dread present in the rest of the Marine parts of the game. And as has been said before, the whole wrestling match business between Ripley and the queen was the worst part of Aliens, hands down.

With the lack of news on the game, there's not much else to do...

nevermind.

Technically, Oblivion can be played in third-person - but only if you do not use ranged weapons. Much like the system in Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines, melee weapons work just as well from the "following camera" viewpoint, while ranged weapons need the accuracy of first-person to be effective. :ermm:

Have you played Resident Evil 4? The third person over-the-shoulder camera works great for ranged weapons.

Swedes, go to: Spel2, for the latest game reviews in swedish!

I'd prefer to keep such things to a very limited role in the game, really. They were a big part of the visual aesthetics in an older Aliens adventure game, "Aliens: A Comic Book Adventure" and I always felt it was one of the few failings of the game. If you're cozy inside an inch of steel plated armour, Aliens bug you less, visually/atmospherically speaking.

I played this on my xbox 360 :) I know, blasphemy for PC activists. I'm a baby PC gamer - just started a couple months back. Anyhow, on my xbox, it was always 3rd person, unless you've got a bow, but if you click the right thumpstick in, it would zoom into 1st. Pretty handy for looting crates and picking herbs for alchemy. Sometimes it helps a lot during a sword fight, too. ;)

I like customizable clothes and armor for my PC, so I guess I shy away from the idea of an RPG that wouldn't allow me to see my body. I guess playing dress-up is part of the fun for me (damn, I'm WAY too girly, aren't I?).

That being said, the creepiest games I've ever played were all 1st person: F.E.A.R., Condemned: Criminal Origins, Bioshock, The Darkness, Prey, DOOM (just to be silly) . So I could see how this would help make it a more frightening experience. You can't really have something sneak up behind you if you can already SEE what's behind you. I've just noticed that all of these were action games, not RPGs.

And I apologize, LadyCrimson, for going horribly off-topic, so my 2 cents: I would like there to be a sequence (but only 1 sequence) that features a robo-suit mini-game. Just to break up all the corridors, which I'm sure will be abundant in this game. :woot:

To be honest, it seems more likely you're just hypersensitive. I don't think anybody around here is arguing with you - a lot of people are pointing out games you've missed, but as far as I can tell that's suggesting not arguing. Personally I'm happy when people point out to me new (or old) games I'd probably like. ;)

A lot of people agree they'd prefer 3rd person to 1st person and vice versa (though in your case I'd obviously urge you to try FPS RPGs before making such a decision). More here: http://forums.obsidianent.com/index.php?showtopic=48703

From the results, there seem to be two equally popular camps: solo and party-based. The solo players prefer FPS view, whilst the party-based players prefer third person view. There's an alarming lack of support for third person solo, which is interesting considering that's probably what this game will be.

In my case it's not that I dislike third person solo, just that I prefer first person solo more.

Personally i'd hope for isometric squad based anyway.

I was talking about Bloodlines, I know there are games that have a good third-person ranged system. ;)
