Walsingham Posted October 11, 2007 Posted October 11, 2007 After patiently thumping me on the head, Pidesco has explained. Unfortunately I am going to be busy this evening, so I pass my go on. Will jump in tomorrow. BTW, how are we on starting wars? "It wasn't lies. It was just... bull****"." -Elwood Blues tarna's dead; processing... complete. Disappointed by Universe. Tale Posted October 11, 2007 Posted October 11, 2007 Okay, I'll look into doing it when I get home tonight. Consider yourselves warned. "Show me a man who "plays fair" and I'll show you a very talented cheater."
Pidesco Posted October 11, 2007 Posted October 11, 2007 It's not all about building ships. Coastal locations get significantly better trade route income (via harbors), and the Dutch Dike adds 1 hammer to each riverfront and coastal tile (but can only be built in a coastal or riverfront city). EDIT: Also, we're financial, so working coast tiles is much more attractive, but only worthwhile if we have coastal frontage in the city so that we can build a lighthouse. My point about the Double Gems site is that, with all that grassland around (under the jungle), we really don't need more than 1 food bonus to make the city grow-- you'll want to be working those gems and some cottages, not the extra food bonuses. If we can move the city so that those extra food-bonus squares can contribute to a different city that would use them better (by using them to feed specialists), we'll be in a more advantageous situation. I didn't know that the dike worked on coastal tiles as well. Live and learn. That does make the coastal cities much more attractive. Tale Posted October 12, 2007 Posted October 12, 2007 (edited) I'm not very dependable over the internet. Tale Posted October 13, 2007 Posted October 13, 2007 If you're willing to be patient, I can do it tonight. Which would mean somewhere around 3 hours from now. "Show me a man who "plays fair" and I'll show you a very talented cheater."
Tale Posted October 13, 2007 Posted October 13, 2007 (edited) Turn 0: Change leader name to God Emperor Feargus Send a Settler to Enoch's green dot (two grids down). Set worker near Irvine to pasture the nearby cows. 1: Irvine's location seems prime for production with the hills and mines. And by production, I mean WAR PRODUCTION. Build a barracks! Worker at Peragus starts to build road between Peragus and Irvine. 2: Pasture near Irvine starts building. 3: Mysticism completed. Since we access Copper, Archery is started. Peragus starts another worker to make up for all road building and incoming new city. City of DOOM is founded. Starts with a barracks. Locals of DOOM seem to dislike all the jungle, so nearest worker, the one building roads between Peragus and Irvine redirected to deal with the issue. 6: Pasture worker near Irvine is done. Connects it via road. 8: Peragus Worker is done building. Begins granary since Corn will soon be accessible. Road from Peragus to DOOM started. Elizabeth makes her haughty self known. She's incredibly ugly and has her nose up in the air. Despite my better judgement I don't cut it off right there and jump on her face. I hope I don't regret it. Road from Irvine to DOOM started. 9: Archery complete Sailing started so we can get some trade in DOOM. 10: Archer started in Irvine because the local populace are a bunch of frickin' cowards when they don't have any protection. I swear to ****ing god. 12: A group of warriors engage Barbarian forces. Due to my great leadership, the warriors are victorious. Mine is started on one of the gems tiles. 14: Archer complete in Peragus. Granary started. 16: Sailing complete. Horseback started since we have horses near Irvine. 17: New Settler started in Peragus 20: Gem mine complete. Enoch Posted October 13, 2007 Author Posted October 13, 2007 Not bad. A few things for the next player to look out for: I still like my purple, black, white, and pink city locations from the dotmap I did a while back. As for the Red location (the perfect GP factory), we'll have to raze that Babylonian city first. We need more workers to get those roads done and to continue to upgrade our cities' infrastructure. (That Iron mine near Irvine needs a road!) I don't particularly like Tale's research choices. Archery is a dead-end tech that we don't particularly need because we can build axemen to defend our cities. I only ever research it if I have no early metals or horses. Horseback Riding (the current tech) is also a dead-end, and we don't even have the horses to take advantage of it. We're doing a REX (Rapid Early eXpansion) strategy here, so we should be rushing for techs to support our economy, like Currency and Code of Laws. Once we get Writing, I think we should open borders with the civs that don't border us directly (Liz and Zara). They're no threat to sneak in and settle city sites we want, and if we can get some international trade routes, it will help our economy. Also, we might get a religion spread to us that way, which is handy.
Pidesco Posted October 13, 2007 Posted October 13, 2007 I think Tale may have botched our chances of a proper Oracle slingshot. Other than that, I think he did fine. Also, people should generally do what Enoch says even if I disagree with him. I still won't do what he says, though. As for a religion, I think that now our best change of getting one is Code Of Laws, so we should direct research that way. It's on the way to Civil Service too, so even without the religion I think it's the way to go tech wise. Finally, it seems to me that your red dot site, Enoch, has to go two or three tiles south because of the proximity to Peragus. So, who's next? Walsingham? Enoch Posted October 13, 2007 Author Posted October 13, 2007 Finally, it seems to me that your red dot site, Enoch, has to go two or three tiles south because of the proximity to Peragus. That was part of the plan. When I made the post after having drawn and uploaded the dotmap, I realized that both Red and Green would be better off 2 tiles south. Since the 2-South Green is now DOOM (?), I was referring to the 2-South Red as well. 2 food bonuses and 7 floodplains make it the perfect place to build our National Epic (2X GP production) and Globe Theatre (no unhappiness, ever).
Pidesco Posted October 13, 2007 Posted October 13, 2007 By the way, I think that city should the next to be founded, and as such we should begin to plan an attack on Hammurabi. For starters we should scout his territory, and have Peragus begin producing City Raider units. His bowmen worry me, though. Enoch Posted October 13, 2007 Author Posted October 13, 2007 By the way, I think that city should the next to be founded, and as such we should begin to plan an attack on Hammurabi. For starters we should scout his territory, and have Peragus begin producing City Raider units. His bowmen worry me, though. I don't agree. Our economy can't support a war right now without making our research rate collapse. We'd do better to build a city to get that gold mined, and build up our infrastructure before provoking a war. Also, we can't really scout his territory until we get Writing, and that would require an OB treaty (which I don't think we want). I say hold off on invading Babylon until we have a nice stack of catapults to support our invaders. We can do without Red Dot for a while, and I doubt that Babylon or Egypt are going to try to sneak in there-- it looks like there's plenty of land for them to claim out West. This isn't Civ 3 where the AI would plop a city down on any little gap in your cultural borders.
Pidesco Posted October 13, 2007 Posted October 13, 2007 Well, I think that as soon as we place a bunch of cottages our economy should be able to handle the extra war effort. However I agree about waiting for catapults before making a full attack on Babylon. Also, remember that all we may need to do in a first war against Babylon is to raze that smaller city and pick out any stray units (especially workers). If we build a moderately large army I don't think Babylon is going to actively retaliate and, as such we should be able to negotiate peace a few turns later. Goddamit, that AI habit was one of things I hated the most in Civ 3. God Emperors have no use for the superstitious drivel of others! My own superstitious drivel should be quite enough, thank you. I only had 20 turns.
