Two of my newest fanarts. Hope you'll like them.

I know there aren't to be any preds, but the idea of captivated alien queen is cool anyway :(

Fanatstic work!

I suppose that art consists mostly of mattepainting?

Mattepainting? God, no.

I use a combination of 3d and 2d. First I rendered the basic 3d scene with Vue d'Esprit. With basic objects, and lights. Than, the 60% of work is made in Photoshop, by painting.

Out of curiosity - what parts of these looks like mattepainting ?;)

Oh, and one more thing. For the first pic I used dropships 3d model by Derrin Proctor :)

quite amazing pics.

Let me get back to sleeping. I'm tired...

First picture, background. And there's nothing bad about Mattepainting, it's a common method in movie and industrial industry. Anyway, the Alien in the first picture seems not to integrate into the background very well. There's too much blur in the background, also, lights and saturation need to be better matched with the alien. There were the laser hits the ground - this should also reflect a bit more on the belly and side of the alien.

The second picture looks pretty much perfect though.

You are right about the blur, it's a bit too much on alien - Especially the left hand (his right). Not sure about the background though, I wanted to focus mostly on the alien.

The laser hits the ground behind alien, but yeah.. there should be probably some light on its belly.

This is no excuse, but I have no tablet, and all was done only by mouse.. so maybe it is why some things are the way they are :shifty:

Sorry, but I don't buy this. You can't draw such images merely with a mouse.

Why not? Like I said, I start with basic 3d render, which is looking like this:

And than, I put it in photoshop, and USING A MOUSE, turning it into something like this :

Still don't buying it ?:shifty:

Maybe it's just me, but I'd find it incredibly hard to draw with a mouse. I mean you need something like pen to hold in your hands, with the pressure intensity and tilt in order to draw properly. With your talent, though, I'd reccomend you to get a Wacom Intuos tablet - it would ease your work drastically.

Tell me about it.

It's pain in the ass to draw by mouse.

That's why most of my backgrounds are rendered in 3d.

As you can see, many of my arts are very dark, with only lights and shadows. It is because I'm unable to draw all with a mouse.

For instance this is drawn ENTIRELY with a mouse:

1. Scaned sketch:

2. Lineart (mouse):

3. Final version ( photoshop + mouse ):

Indubitably.

For some reason, I'm getting a

Boy howdy! That's some awesome work. Neat concept with the alien and the lady. Ditto but less so with the dropship strafing.

Fwwiw, and bearing in mind I can't really draw I like using a trackball not a mouse. It takes getting used to, but it's more freeform.

tarna's dead; processing... complete. Disappointed by Universe. RIP Hades/Sand/etc. Here's hoping your next alt has a harp.

I fancy myself a dabler in photoshop, your shading is bloody awesome, why don'y you get a digitizer so you don't have to draw with 10 thumbs.

I thought matte painting was simply painting on glass to create a backdrop, something that became anacronistic with computers.

I definitely do. Great work! Are you by any chance a professional concept artist?

Thanks

No I'm not, and I don't think I ever will be. This is my hobby, though it would be cool if somebody asked me about doing some official alien art :)

Ahh, so that's your game eh, touting for business.

No, wonderful stuff and of a professional standard too... as far as I know, at least.

  • 2 weeks later...

Certainly a professional standard, without a doubt.

Agreed. Very proffessional work from my perspective.

Give it a shot in applying your resume as a concept artist whenever you are ready I would suggest.

Sadly not an uncommon phenonomena when people posts their creations in public places.

Some jerks misinterpret accessible as "free for the taking"

Still, even in smaller size, shows some great ideas visualised
