The 'story' is far from complex.

I enjoyed Halo actually, even on PC, mainly for the multiplayer. I still play Halo 1 every now and again.

debatable.

The story is about an interstellar conflict between two groups, the humans and a collection of races that work for the same church. The halo rings were created by a group that not much is known about and the covenant want to activate it in order to complete their spiritual goals (and end up sundering all life in the known galaxy. Currently the Humans are on the loosing side of the war (an accidental attack caused a massive battle above earth that could still go either way) and we're not entirely sure what the brutes are in all this.

Erm...Halo has some of the most complex storytelling in any FPS. Right up there with the Half Lifes IMO.

It's really fun on the console with friends, the PC version was pretty meh. I'm extremely impressed with how much effort Bungie has gone to to flesh out the universe. There's a lot of pretty impressive mythos there, but not much of it is actually in the games.

Unfortunately, that's not saying a whole lot...

Well Halo is too simplistic for a computer. there are a small number of guns, enemy ai is minimal, and there is little that makes it that complex other than the story.

I have to disagree with this in a few ways. I'm not a big Halo fan, but let's be sensible. Number of guns has never been indicative of how good or complex the game is. I find most guns in FPS to either be useless or redundant. All large numbers of guns do, for me, is cause me to juggle my guns around trying to find some sort of optimal ammo conservation. Which is really distracting from the gameplay.

The enemy AI is about par for what we still see. They have simple squad behavior and use of cover, which is pretty much standard nowadays. Only thing they lack really is flanking.

Halo's story is a Hollywood action flick story with a sci-fi background. I enjoy the game and it deserves the success, but pretending that the story has any level of depth or verisimilitude is erroneous.

With enemy AI, Halo levels are often designed so that you are running along a linear, fairly narrow/small, set of corridors shooting at stuff. It's both the cause and result of a fairly standard, but unimaginative AI set; what would have made it something special is to have traps, and other 'special' things to run into. Instead all you get are glorified crates and turrets.
