What would Aliens fans think of the game were it NOT action/combat-centric?

Screw this game, I am off to buy the other SEGA published Aliens game developed by Gearbox.

Winner.

- When he is best, he is a little worse than a man, and when he is worst, he is little better than a beast.

Personally I'm disappointed they gave it to Gearbox and not Monolith.

I love monolith so much.

And I've never been excited about anything Gearbox has ever done. So, maybe I can share your sentiment!

I loved the Half-Life expansion, Opposing Forces.

I think I stopped liking Monolith after FEAR..

Up until then I thought they did somewhat less generic shooters than the rest of the bunch. I mean No One Lives Forever and Aliens vs Predator 2 were great stylistic and atmospheric games. Then came Contract JACK (if anyone remembers that POS).. and Condemned.. and FEAR. I know at least Condemned and FEAR got great reviews, but I thought they lacked soul. Condemned was a bit scary, but it was so brainless it hurt. Why even bother having "clues" and crap when all it takes is ONE PRESS OF A BUTTON to solve the problem? FEAR was cool for a while, but after killing the billionth same soldier in the billionth same gray office building, it got stale.

Swedes, go to: Spel2, for the latest game reviews in swedish!

Up until FEAR, I loved Monolith too.

Anyone played SHOGO?

It has made me the man I am today. A man who craves furry hentai.

So let us go and embrace the rustling smells of unseen worlds

Shogo was pure awesomness. :(

Just thinking..."You are a member of the Weyland Yutani, in a cargo class ship, trying to convince the rest of the crew (who dont know who you are) to visit a planet full of alien's eggs..." hehehe

RPG Aliens baased game its gonna be fun, but hard to develop. Action its an important part of the game, we are talking about aliens anyway...they are fast, letal, dangerous...combats whit turns?...hell no.

Where's Yutani when we need him?

What's wrong with GearBox developing Aliens though? The Brothers In Arms series helped to promote growth in the somewhat stagnant FPS genre by injecting innovative tactical gameplay on the run with impressive AIs.

Its certain that unlike the first two AvP games or Monolith, we will definitely see squadmates/team mates having big roles in the gameplay and atmosphere.

Could be another Oblivion but in deep space? Some RPG...some Action. People are talking about UT3 engine...im not sure of that, seems to be a expensive one...If you dont want an action based game...your choice is UT3 engine? Mmmmm

I still found FEAR less generic than most FPS. Like you, I tired of the repetitive levels, and the reptetive soldiers. I also quickly tired of the constant swicthing between a brief hallucinatory vision followed by an encounter with solders followed by a brief hallucinatory vision follwed by an encounter with soldiers, wash, rinse repeat.

But despite that I almost finished the game before I lost interest which is unusual. I rarely make it past the first couple levels of any FPS game. SO I give it credit for doing something right.

Notice how I can belittle your beliefs without calling you names. It's a useful skill to have particularly where you aren't allowed to call people names. It's a mistake to get too drawn in/worked up. I mean it's not life or death, it's just two guys posting their thoughts on a message board. If it were personal or face to face all the usual restraints would be in place, and we would never have reached this place in the first place. Try to remember that.

I've beat FEAR 3 times. The only part I don't like is the part after the soldiers. The combat encounters, to me, are action based puzzles, especially since Monolith made a point of making you aware of almost all enemies before you encounter them. They have lots of exciting ways to deal with them.

My two favorites:

One has something like three guys walking around on the same level as you, and another going up the stairs as you approach. I like to throw a grenade at the three on floor level and then try to shotgun the guy on the stairs in half as I run up it. Often the grenade will only take out one or two of the guys it's meant to take out, so you have to improvise the rest.

My absolute favorite encounter of the game starts where you see, through some windows, a group of soldiers running to set up an ambush against you. If you act quickly and run, you can get there before them. At the very least, if you're quick enough you can get into melee range before they react to you. So, while you could simple toss a grenade and then exchange fire against 5 guys, you can instead kick all of their faces in.

First NOLF is my fave FPS game ever. I never that much enjoyed playing any other FPS after NOLF.

I think Gearbox did a terrible job with Brothers in Arms. The new one may be a better game, but in all honesty I'm not looking forward to it after the first and I'm not crazy about them being involved with an alien game.

BiA was supposed to be the most realistic WWII game ever made, yet you can't lean around corners or go prone. Two of the most important combat manuevers soldiers use. Combined with the game having no pain animation it brought this layer of complete fakeness in a realistic environment. I can't believe one of the first WWII shooters ever made, Medal of Honor, had amazing pain animations while shooting enemies in BiA has absolutly no effect. Any other shooter, if an enemy is hit, they grab the body part you shot, fall backwards or give some sort of actual semi-realistic reaction. In BiA their reaction is to immediatly look at you, like you hit them with a spit wad, and then return fire. It just completly removed any semblance of realism.

About the only thing I've liked that Gearbox has worked on was the Half Life: Opposing Forces expansion pack.

Last obsidian games like NWN2 and KotorII had an excellent gameplay, but poor grafics (and optimization)...

People are talking about UT3...im wondering... why? Do you really think that obsidian its gonna develope an RPG whit that kind of engine after products like NWN2 And Kotor?

Only played Opposing Force from Gearbox, which was awesome, everything else they made didn't really pique my interest.

Oh and Monolith is awesome! I can't wait till they announce some new games.

I think they've mentioned that they have licensed the Unreal Engine 3.. but I'm not sure for which projects. So far I'm not that impressed with the games I've seen that uses the UE3. Gears of War is pretty and the Xbox 360 handles the game pretty well, but it's still static as hell, environments are non-destructive and it's just less impressive (feature-wise) than I had expected. Same with Rainbow Six: Vegas. It's a real beast to run (needs lots of computer power), doesn't look that much better compared to other games and I never even got AA to work.

For some reason I've envisioned the games using the UE3 to be full of destructible objects, perfect physics and amazing graphics. Oh, and they would all have great streaming maps that loaded on the fly without loading times. Right. I guess that's for the next next next next next gen.

perhaps its more about the developer that the engine they use...i mean, valve made a wonderfull job whit source in HL2, but some games in source looks horrible...UT3 looks impressive, but im whit you, phisics and destructible eviroments are the key ingameplay...Acid blood in Aliens, you know, that kind of thing in the walls and floor...mmm

Obsidian makes the best games given the materials they have to work with and the time they have to make the product.

Man, that really sounds fanboish. <_<

Do we know how long Obsidian is going to have to produce the game? Are you still in pre-production at the moment?

Until sometime in 2009. We are still in pre-production and will be for a very long time.

Can you explain to me how teammates would benefit the game in any way?

It's scarier for a marine when they're all alone, predators generally seem to hunt on their own, I guess a squad of aliens might be kind of cool but other than that I see it completely ruining the atmosphere.
