Well Ill start of by saying even this RPG does seem realistic, as long as it does not turn out to be Aliens vs. Predator: Extinction knockoff.

This has already been ruled out by the lead designer, as Obidian don't have the rights to the Predator IP.

we're not making an AvP game, so the Yautja aren't part of "our" universe for practical purposes.

I agree with some people in a sense that the mantra of the original Alien design, to Giger

Whatever you do though stay away from the Doom 3 clich

lol @ everyone calling them xenomorphs

I know, there's just something that doesn't feel right when they are called that :\

Well, until they're actually classified by a canon source, that's the only real name to call them, as that appears to be the in story name for an unclassfied non-terrestrial critter. :)

Meh, I've always just called them aliens (which it seems is a synonym for xenomorph :))

I know a lot of people call them that, but it just never sounded right for me.

Oh well.

I like to call them Xenobians (from the classical roots), because they don't particularly morph ... not when the incubate inside the same mammals. :D

i wanna see what an alien would look like after bursting out of godzillas chest.

The force helps me poop better, and use lightsabers to cut my food that then turns into poop.

The only place where "Alien" is used is in the titles.

Worse, in some countries, "Alien" was not even part of the title. For instance, in Poland, "Alien" was titled "The Eighth Passenger of the Nostromo".

"xenomorph", on the other hand, is used several times in the movies. First, to describe any kind of pest that impedes terraforming a new world. Then, in Alien3, to specifically identify the beast.

People will casually use "alien" quite often, though.

So you're saying the creature isn't an alien? :)

Note, I said I called them aliens, not Aliens. I specifically do so because they aren't really given a name. Unless you suggest that a name that was already used as a classification (since no documentation of the creature ever existed prior to Ripley's debriefing in the second movie) by Lt. Gorman, assumably based on some sort of prior knowledge, then be applied, then fine. I just happen to disagree.

I personally think the name sounds stupid and coarse. I don't mind it when being described for the classification "It seems as though a Xenomorph may be involved" like Gorman used it. But when using it to describe the creatures ("A whole bunch of Xenomorphs came from the rafters", or "Ripley had a fight with a Queen Xenomorph") the word sounds awkward and clumsy IMO. It certainly doesn't seem to have appropriate flow. As for what people would refer to the creatures as, I'd be surprised if any but the biggest fans would refer to it as a Xenomorph.

I haven't seen Alien 3 in quite some time, but I'll dig it up (unless you can provide me with Ripley's quote directly) and have a look see. I wouldn't be surprised if the context used it could still be replaced with "Unknown alien lifeform," but maybe it can't. In any case, I find it unfortunate, because it seems to me that it's just a giant plot hole, where someone (either a fan or a writer for the movie) made the same mistake that many people seem to make, and assume that Gorman was somehow referring to a species that had never been discovered before by a specific name. If there's future references to it in later movies, then IMO that's unfortunate, and not really the eye for detail that I like to see. I could easily see it being used that way in Resurrection as well, which is again unfortunate (and I think they started elevating the creature to mythlike proportions too much anyways. They had become so unbelievably perfect. Smart, adaptive, etc.)

Apparently I'm not the only one either, as the discussion page of the Wikipedia entry seems to indicate.

I understand that people will call it that since there isn't much of a better name, and for some reason I'm much more open to referring to it as A Xenomorph rather than The Xenomorph. Since it's a minor issue, call it a pet peeve I guess.

I bet Fox is very political about these things. It's probably what prevented movies 2, 3 and 4 from assigning a name to the species.

In fact, it could be that the authority of such a naming solely belongs to O'Bannon and Giger, which would lead Fox to avoid any potential litigation.

"alien" ("noun: a form of life assumed to exist outside the Earth or its atmosphere") is very generic and lacks mystery, IMHO.

Yet, we don't have many alternatives to work with.

Maybe Obsidian could clue us in on the level of creative freedom they have been granted? In other words, are you allowed to go wild and name the species?

I still think this is a detail, but...people seem to be very preoccupied about it...

Romance... with a xenomorph? We can only hope.

I don't think the partner would enjoy the denouement of the romance with an alien ...

I think we have the freedom to allow characters in the world to call "the" aliens whatever seems appropriate considering their place in the timeline and universe. ;)

I see. In other words, if you situate the action far from the movies, both in time and space, you can name them as you deem appropriate.

That is really cool. You pretty much have a blank page in front of you.

Do you already know how you will refer to the species in the game?

Do you have to send your screenplay/storyboard to Fox for approval? (sorry, I use movie terms here, but you get the idea)

It'd be different to have someone saved from incubation.

I would prefer it if it were possible for people to last until endgame, assuming you were keen enough to help them out along the way to work with them to prevent them from dying.

Nice idea.

I would like to see a situation that's more about suspense than itchy trigger fingers, something like Carpenter's "The Thing". Where the PC must work together with NPCs for a while but that the suspicion of incubation was ever present for all - and that the actual host was a different NPC at each replay. Many kinds of interactions could be made with the premise that no one is trustworthy, and that suspicions may overshadow the reality of the situation (ie, fear of incubation when there is none).

Random impregnations for each playthrough would be awesome.
