Why did you join he military?

Its just that my friend signed up for the airforce to be something fancy and actualy became a plumber. His military career was switched without his knowledge and as soon as you could say **** he was a plumber in the military.  Wasn't his ideal job at the time is all.

That's pretty similar to what happened to my hubby w/the army. The bait and switch sort of thing...he was not happy.

they do this based on test scores. not necessarily good/bad scores, but what they think you will do well in. it is sort of communist in its nature, really... a kind of "outcome based" education. it is also a matter of need. however, if you totally ace the tests (which are actually reported as IQ scores, btw), you get to pick and they won't mess with your MO.

What makes you think his ass needs saving?

Maybe it doesn't right now. I'm just saying that the next time he wonders about ...I don't know... why there aren't bands of rampaging militiamen mutilating his family jewels with machetes... he could spare a thought for the people who protect him. You know the old arguement about men only being because better men...yadda yadda.

According to the tests the Navy gave me I could have became a nuclear engineer on a submarine.

if you were enlisted, you actually would have been a tech. unless you could have entered into OCS and gotten a degree, too.

the navy regularly recruits officer candidates for their nuke program at engineering schools, btw. two of my fraternity brothers entered as well. the one apparently made his way up the ranks on a ship, the other got back on the plane after landing and said "hell no!" he had the same problem with authority that you and i have, hades.

Well, it's just that some people are cowards. Simple as that. Nothing really wrong with that, apart from the sad fact that they depend on better people than themselves for their welfare.

What really amuses me is that some cowards are too afraid to even openly declare their cowardice, choosing to conceal it behind lame rhetorics and land-of-candy style idiosincrasies instead. Cowardice is just another form of immaturity.

Strictly not true!

Just look at Israel where everyone that isn't suffering from a serious physical disability must serve in the army for no less than six years, or something like that.

Anyway, it's entirely possible that I just made that up given my present level of intoxication, but I think I remember something along those lines. You go and check it out and prove me wrong, or not. :x)

How would forcing people into armed service remove their cowardice though? Wouldn't they still be showing it once they immediately get out of the armed service once their mandatory time has been served?

How is it any different than someone that chooses not to enlist in a volunteer army?

I didn't say it would. I was just addressing your statement that mass enlistment would drive to economic collapse.

Anyway, those two are completely unrelated issues, as someone doesn't need to join up to be willing to fight for what they hold dear. That's what Wals' comment was about, and that's what I was commenting on as well. I wasn't sure you were trying to go that way, but saying that "I'm not serving because somebody needs to run the country" is just a poor excuse.

Note that I don't advocate compulsory service, as I believe that a voluntary, highly specialised professional military is better than massive conscription-based armies. Also, I respect people that choose not to serve for whatever reasons, except cowardice. Not because I believe in glorious bravery or any of that militaristic rhetorical crap, but, because as I said before, cowardice is just another form of immaturity.

Fair enough. I was operating under the assumption that people enlisting in the military would stay in for a while, and that's not necessarily good.

Also, doesn't Israel receive it's fair share of financial aid from the United States?

So how is it determined that someone doesn't enlist because they are a coward?

No idea, to be honest. If it does, however, there must be a reason for it. I hear jews worldwide have a somewhat considerable economic power. It could be one of those crazy ass conspiracy theories, too.

That's none of my business, really. I'm operating at the individual level and it's not one of my priorities to expose cowards. In any case, I can't see any benefit coming from people being labeled cowards or not accurately. They do know who they are though, and that's enough for me.

Anyway, back on topic... maybe.

I don't think everyone should feel obliged to sign up. Some people benefit society a hell of a lot more not waist deep in mud and getting shouted at. I mean, can you really see Einstein at bayonet practice? *thinks* Actually I find that notion strangely terrifying.

"I haff proofed, as you can see on ziss blackboard zat zey don't like it up zem."

I just have difficulty grasping the notion that one genuinely might have such degraded social conscience that you'd cheerfully leave everyone you've known, and everything that made you who you are to get trampled by some invading swines. I really don't mean that to be insulting. I'd like to understand, if you could explain.

One thing that all these "you owe your freedom to the men in uniform, out there right now, protecting the country" arguments is that I cant understand how its relevant. My grandpa's generation fought in WW2, they held back the Russkies in the Finnish winter war. But that was 60 years ago and grandpa is dead.

There are no men in green doing diddley squat to protect my freedom now. Weve got some soldiers in the UN helping people in africa and afghanistan, and for that they deserve no small credit. But are they protecting my freedom? Are they doing anything for me or my country? No.

If theres anyone protecting my freedom now its the journalists who pull the alarm everytime the politicians tries to pull another scam on us. They are the ones protecting my freedom and rights. People who vote do more than the military, people who arent afraid to say no when somethings not right.

And if youre going to take it even further and ardess this issue with the war on terror. Youve leveled two countries thus far just to be able to protect yourselves from terrorism but in the US, more people die in car accidents every year than has ever been killed by terrorists.

So, if theres anyone slaving away every day keeping you safe an protected.. its not the delta force, its not the FBI, its not the SEALs.. its the traffic police.

Seriously, Ford has killed more people than Bin Laden ever did
