ramza Posted June 4, 2006 Author Posted June 4, 2006 As a student specialized in EU law, I can tell you that everything they say is correct apart from the "single voice in world trade"., which is simply an exaggeration. The EC (European Communities, which are different from the EU) are indeed a member of the WTO but they cannot conclude agreements on any field of trade (the EC is mainly competent to conclude agreements on trade of goods, and agreements on just some aspects of trade of services and intellectual property matters). Besides that, the EU has done a lot more than what is said in this video: EU citizenship, setting up of social standards, cooperation in the fields of security, justice, immigration, education, promotion of national cultures, etc etc etc (the list can be quite long). Some people just cannot accept that times have changed and that the preservation of national sovereignty alone will not save their countries. Those are called "eurosceptics" and will do anything to criticize the EU despite all the benefits it has brought. OK, I admit that the EU also has its share of problems but they are insignificant compared to how much it has improved our life quality since WW2. "Ooo, squirrels, Boo! I know I saw them! All the legislation that is adopted by the EU is implemented both at EU and national levels. Specific bodies have been set up for that purpose. "Ooo, squirrels, Boo! I know I saw them! SteveThaiBinh Posted June 4, 2006 Posted June 4, 2006 Cheaper flights leads to more flights, which leads to greater environmental pollution, yet they pair up cheaper flights and environmental protection as their first two points. Of course, a lot of the achievements of Europe could have been achieved by sovereign governments, individually or in co-operation, but the point is that they weren't. The UK government could have cleaned up the beach near my old house any time it liked, but it didn't - until Europe forced it to. In many trade negotiations, the EU does indeed give Europe a single voice, and as the EU position is for the Common Agricultural Policy and trade tariffs, it hasn't benefited the UK much and has probably done great harm to developing countries. The EU has, in money terms, benefited countries like Spain, Greece and the former communist Eastern Europe more, by reinforcing democratic institutions and investing in infrastructure that allows these countries to trade and prosper. In the long run, we benefit from the stability that provides as much as anyone. I have more doubts about Europe than I used to, but on balance I'm still firmly a euro-enthusiast. Yes, the EU has plenty of laws on these topics. My objection is firstly that the laws are convoluted and intrusive. And secondly that the EU has only a circuitous mandate to make so many damn laws. The Illuminator Posted June 5, 2006 Posted June 5, 2006 hahaha!in means of sarcasm, funny video, however i dont believe that eu has brought peace.i think what eu brings is a reign of chaos like the warcraftiii game after considering the war on kosova. for recent days, i describe eu as an ameoba trying to go somewhere, but not being able to go cuz of the political struggles of the major countries to be at the helm.attempts to enlarge makes the unbalanced random movements of ameoba similar to that as if it is about to xplode cuz f the hesittion to eat the things around or not.
