Diogo Ribeiro
With all the recent tech talk in the GeForce thread, I was wondering if anyone with a fair knowledge of motherboards could recommend me a motherboard and processor combo. I currently have an ASUS A7V8X motherboard with an AMD Athlon Thoroughbred processor with ~1.35 GHz (which can be tweaked up to 1.8 and 2.2~Ghz). What I'm looking for is a motherboard that can still house my ATI Radeon X800 Pro with a corresponding 8x AGP slot, but that it also features a PCI-Express slot so I won't have to switch to another mobo if I feel like upgrading my graphics card. In processing terms, I was thinking of something in the 3Ghz department, probably Pentium as I hear it's stable and I prefer stability to speed. Since I can't really go for anything right now I'd appreciate if the suggestions were made considering that I'll only be able to buy any recommendation in the near future, something ranging between two to six months. Thanks for any help.

mkreku
There's no difference in stability between AMD and Intel. Intel are better at various calculations (better for graphics processing and compression and such) while AMD is generally considered better for gaming applications. Look out for the new Intel core (Conroe) that's coming out soon. Apparently it's supposed to be faster than the FX-60 that's reigning supreme right now. metadigital
I would honestly wait; the new Intel chips will be based on the cooler Pentium M design and should give the next gen Athlon some decent competition in gaming. (Intel's last gen chips were best, hands-down, for video encoding). PCI-E is a must on any new motherboard, as AGP won't support any newer graphics cards, more than likely (only just got the 7800GS). If you must buy a new motherboard, the best tested by Custom PC (coincidentally this month's cover story, tested 19 ), was: [*]Intel the Asus P5WD2-E Premium ( OBSCVRVM PER OBSCVRIVS ET IGNOTVM PER IGNOTIVS OPVS ARTIFICEM PROBAT

angshuman
If you are willing to wait 6 months, do so and get the Intel Conroe, it's a no-brainer. If not, get an AMD. Again a no-brainer. End of story. There are no stability issues with any processors, and most motherboards from reputed manufacturers (Asus, MSI, Gigabyte, etc.) are fantastic.
