roshan Posted February 16, 2006 Posted February 16, 2006 What language have you heard that has the worst sound of them all? A week ago, some vietnamese people at the place I work were talking to each other, and one of my coworkers told me "WTF kind of language is that?". It was horrible, it sounded like they were spitting and vomitting at the same time as speaking. I am very well exposed to other eastern languages, like mandarin chinese, cantonese, japanese and korean, and they all sound ok, even nice in their own way. But vietnamese is a completely different story.
Oerwinde Posted February 16, 2006 Posted February 16, 2006 Tagalo or however you spell it is pretty funny. Its all Gs and Os. Its the native Filipino language. Half the girls at work are filipino so they're always going off in their own language to each other. And its funny because like half the words they don't have a word for it so they just substitute the english word. So it will be like "Bogo mo go baho Bread Tray tago mee bo mi galo." or something wierd like that. The area between the balls and the butt is a hotbed of terrorist activity.

Walsingham Posted February 16, 2006 Posted February 16, 2006 I don't know about most unpleasant, since I'm sure it's just what you are used to. But... " I can't imagine learning arabic. I'm trying to learn pakhtun, but arabic seems to be all glottals. I'd be afraid of damaging that dangly thing at the back of my throat. Afrikaans is a great language for threatening people in. But you try being gently complimentary. It sounds like you want a fight. The language of the bushmen is fething impossible. It is ALL (slight exagerration) clicking noises. "It wasn't lies. It was just... bull****"." -Elwood Blues tarna's dead; processing... complete. Disappointed by Universe. RIP Hades/Sand/etc. Here's hoping your next alt has a harp.
Weiser_Cain Posted February 16, 2006 Posted February 16, 2006 Arabic is pretty bad, so is Vietnamese and Chinese. The again I'm not fond of the english spoken outside of chicago and the other parts of the midwest without an accent. Yaw devs, Yaw!!! (

Morgoth Posted February 16, 2006 Posted February 16, 2006 Swiss is the ugliest my ears had ever to endure. Japanese and Hungarian on the other side are funny. Rain makes everything better.

Lucius Posted February 16, 2006 Posted February 16, 2006 (edited) LOL Wals, if you're afraid of glottals, you'd better stay away from Danish. However, Hungarian and Finnish sounds crazy! But vietnamese is a completely different story. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Vietnamese is a beautiful language, as I guess all languages are to their speakers. It can depend on which area of the country the speaker comes from - the southern accent has fewer harsh consonants and sounds more pleasant to me, and the central area accent is of couse completely incomprehensible. :D Once you start to learn the language and get a feeling for how the tones work, it sounds much more musical. Japanese too is difficult for the non-speaker to appreciate at first, because it doesn't have rhythm the way English does - I've even heard the sound of Japanese compared to machine gun fire. Again, once you've learned a little of the language and appreciated that Japanese has tonic stress instead, you can start to break up the sentences into manageable chunks and begin to appreciate the structure and beauty of the language a little more. I've been to the Phillippines, and I thought Tagalog was a lovely language, very sing-songy with lots of ng sounds. I've always thought English spoken with a South African accent was quite unpleasant, but that's most likely the political associations rather than any quality of the sound itself. Lucius Posted February 16, 2006 Posted February 16, 2006 English is actually not a very nice language, me thinks, I appriciate German more. Lucius Posted February 16, 2006 Posted February 16, 2006 ... but it seems more like an English trying a bit too hard to emulate German.... no wonder this may sound a bit blunt. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Don't they always? alanschu Posted February 16, 2006 Posted February 16, 2006 (edited) I just don't think it flows very nicely, especially when compared to Spanish, French, Italian, etc. Having said that it's probably the language I would prefer to learn as a second language. The accents on pronunciation seem rather heavy, and it's not so much G Edited February 16, 2006 by alanschu
Kaftan Barlast Posted February 16, 2006 Posted February 16, 2006 The following languages are ugleh (according to K. Barlast ) The Semitic languages (hebrew, arab etc.) for their horrible guttural sounds The Dutch and its south african derivates also for nasty back-of-the-throat sounds Southeast asian languages(vietnamese, indonesian) which completely lack the style and grace of their northern counterparts Yiddisch, just sounds nutty Languages that are ok as a whole like English or Swedish also posses many accents or dialects that are quite vile to the ears.
