Should I switch to the darkside?

I don't hold with this "try anything once notion". If you feel like spending a bunch of money every single month just to make people the other side of the world impresssed, or maybe improving yourself, contribute to a charity.

Otherwise,

I have never got a "huzzah" for being drunk. Actually one woman have talked me again because I was drunk with her... She was an absolutist and I thought it was hilarious to offer her drinks all the evening.

This post is not to be enjoyed, discussed, or referenced on company time.

Or at least NWN.  Online NWN is free and you get what you pay for.

Hmm....I tossed about the idea of loading up NWN again last night...but the game itself is just so dull...can any fan made content make up for it? What out there is worth downloading?

Care to tell me any more about them? Pardon me if I'm a little sceptic about what's on the link. Are they any good (in your opinion)?

It's too bad interesting threads quickly degenerate into spam fests - beer anyone?

Mmos have made huge inroads into the gamers community. WOW with approx 2M subscribers is a case in point, these sort of numbers were thought to be impossible just a few years ago.

Eve gets up to almost 15k people playing on the same server at the same time, this too is a triumph of technology.

A few years ago people praising mmos were howled down by a vast majority of posters, this is no longer the case.

The cost issue of mmos is also misleading. With Eve for example, you pay US$20 for the game which entitles you to a months play, then $15 pm. That is excellent value for money for a game that you play for potentially hours each day. I've bought heaps of sp games costing $50 that I only played for a short time, sometimes for less than a week. In comparison that's very bad value.

My only problem with mmos is that they are so addictive that they take over your life, but that's a good problem to have, enjoying something so much that you keep wanting to do it.

Hey Tiligua, it's not a spam fest. I'm saying there ARE alternatives to MMOs. And I'm enjoying one right now. I don't hold with folks who say 'go out and get a life' generally because they are fethwits, whose lives I couldn't envy if I tried. But there is a high opportunity cost to MMOs. The same investment of time could get you a very long way in other directions.

*shrugs*

But you do what you like.

Could anybody tell me a little bit more about Eve? I went to the website but it just seemed overwhelming.

I think you might want to switch your rhetoric from, "MMOs are great!" to "Eve is great!", because pretty much every negative stereotype about EverQuest and WoW is true. You also may want to consider the possibility that you are a fan of a cult game rather than a new milestone for the genre. I am familiar with the sensation - I liked Fallout, Baldur's Gate and Planescape: Torment.

EVE is basically a game where you're a ship pilot of one of a variety of races.

The game is pretty open in terms of how you specialize your character and how you can play the game, given the space archetype.

You can be a pirate, mercenary, merchant, miner, and corporations serve as the guild mechanic in the game.

Almost all of the economy is entirely player driven. You can check out buy orders and try to satisfy them in order to turn a profit, and perhaps check out the sell orders which is basically people selling the goods. The economy is actually really neat, although I only played the 14 day trial of the game. I was too busy with school at the time.

Have you played an MMO Walshingham?

As you well know, mate. I have never played an MMO. I thought it was well known by all, and was part of the fun of being so scathing. I apologise to anyone who thought I was well informed.

Nevertheless, points about opportunity costs stand.

You will probably need both expansions for the better modules, certainly I have both and so my selection will encompass this fact.

:)

Adam Miller is technically very, very sound in his module design. He has many, I would start at the beginning Dreamcatcher 1 and work through until the last one (url=http://nwvault.ign.com/View.php?view=Modules.Detail&id=3699]Demon[/url], which I didn't like, per se, but I was amazed at the mechanical aptitude he showed in creating it). The entire package can be downloaded here, including all the additional hakpacks, sounds and movies (150MB).

Rick Burton I think has been swallowed up into Bioware after the truly excellent modules he has created. I particularly liked his Paladin trilogy (that he has only finished the first two modules for :ermm: ): so much so that I had never played a Paladin before (didn't like the alignment restriction) but now like them enough to play often.

SubBassman (who sometimes lurks on these fora) has made an enormous campaign module, over 80 hours worth, called Tortured Hearts 1. It took him about three years of continual development, in his own time, and it is pretty comprehensive; diurnal and nocturnal patterns for citizens of the world, and gold encumberance (two pounds per thousand GP) to name just two.

Again, these all listed are amazing for the new ideas (feats used in conversation, etc) and unique features (SubBassman even has a clock you can win as a reward, so that you can better manage your trips to shops, which close at night, etc.)

Basically read the Hall of Fame comments. There are a gazillion modules being created every day, and only the better ones even get a look in, so most of the stuff there is pretty good. The worst I have come across was just a little too buggy for me to enjoy (A Hunt Through the Dark), but they all had something to give.

Very true, Eve dealt with many of the mmo issues that irritated me. There's no grinding but to be realistic you need to play for about a month to get a character that starts to be useful. With Eve you train a skill just by clicking on it and after a pre-determined time you get the skill, no need to kill or craft etc. The training happens offline as well, it's a very good system.

Mining is akin to grinding, but if that doesn't interest you then you can trade or just fight. There are many people in Eve who have never mined and are PvP specialists. The fighting is absolutely great, I've played Eve many times with sweaty palms and a racing heart, waiting for a confrontation that will result in death or destruction. In Eve when you die you lose your ship and that is a real hassle, plus you also get removed from the vicinity of the fight by being ressurected as a clone, if you have bothered to make a clone of yourself. This stops the SWG madness of killing the same person 5 times in 10 minutes.

The Guild/Corporation system is great and new players will usually be well looked after by established player groups, who will help you heaps. All mmos have the interaction between friends, which is one of the big advantages mmos have over sp games, however as opposed to other mmos, Eve has superior game play.

Eve has a steep learning curve but that is one of the reasons it's so addictive, it's not a game you quickly master. Another really good thing about Eve is that if you specialize, a newish player can be as useful a player as a 1-2 year veteran. I'm hoping that other mmo devs will see what works on Eve and use it for their game.
