"They were getting in front of me and I was there a lot earlier than them, so I thought that it was just," he said.
SteveThaiBinh Posted August 16, 2005 Posted August 16, 2005 Don't these people read the newspapers? This kind of thing is happening all the time! Hurlshort Posted August 17, 2005 Posted August 17, 2005 As a teacher, this is depressing. I teach in a fairly nice school district, and because of this we DO NOT get the extra funding for things like laptops. They should be passing these through the school systems first. The problem lies in the Federal programs that cover these tech grants that the laptops likely came from. They are very limited and have a ton of bizarre restrictions. Second, maybe the laptops should be given to students instead? I'm sure they need the $50, but I would much rather see those High School seniors who can't afford something like this get first opportunity. Lastly, I think they should have an essay writing requirement for anyone who wants to purchase one. That will get rid of many of the folks who are just looking to resell the laptops for a quick buck. It will also reinforce the whole idea that this comes from an "educational institute".
Cantousent Posted August 17, 2005 Posted August 17, 2005 If it hadn't been for the reputable source (yes, I consider CNN, MSNBC, and FOX news all reputable sources) I would have thought this was a joke. Cantousent Posted August 17, 2005 Posted August 17, 2005 Fox news is a reputable news source. It is no more biased than other mainstream media sources. It is different only in that its bias has a conservative slant. Since I tend to take my news from a wide variety of news outlets, I think I would have caught Fox news in a blatant lie or in complete failure to give an adequate account of a story. Now, I often notice a variety of angles from different news sources. Nevertheless, I don't see this as any worse from Fox News than anyone else. Attacking Fox News as a reliable source of news is, in the United States at least, a popular way to undermine conservatives. Conservatives, on the other hand, have been attacking CNN in the same way. I've heard Communist News Network, Clinton News Network, and even Communism NOT News. The fact is, however, that CNN and Fox News would lose shares if they outright lied. For my purposes, I'll take any of the major news networks, although I imagine Fox News tends to be a little more pop culture. It's interesting, but it's also frustrating to watch. For the most part, these networks dedicate more time to talking heads than actual news. I'm not responsible for O'Reilly or whatever his name is. I don't cite him as a source. EnderAndrew Posted August 17, 2005 Posted August 17, 2005 Oddly enough my detractors often label me (falsely) as a conservative, but I defend CNN as the most trustworthy news source. Ted Turner does still control CNN as a major stockholder, and I saw a CNN article that threw Ted Turner under the bus before the Atlanta Olympics. It reported that he paid thugs to take all the homeless of the streets of Atalanta and dump them outside of town before the Olympics.

thepixiesrock Posted August 17, 2005 Posted August 17, 2005 Well, considering they bought a whole new bunch of laptops for thier students, I think they wanted to pay for a little of the new laptops by selling the old ones. They were only selling laptops to the people in the comunity, one per person, so if the students leaving this year wanted them, they thought they would have a fair chance to get them. As long as Fox is not your only source of news, then you are okay. Personally, I like to read the newspapers regularly, just because it is impossible to cover any current affairs in sufficient depth in five minute sound bites, which is the format that predominates the tv. A different slant can make a HUGE difference, especially if it's reported as if it is not biased. I think the BBC news service deserves its distinction for even-handed reporting. Even so, there are more than the average amount of socialists in the employ: one newsreader accidentally called the Labour Party "we" on air recently ... I would like to see the Citizen Kane effect circumvented, though. I think it is very dangerous that Murdock controls most of the media around the world, for example. I know it is paranoid to suggest that he can control an election, but the fact remains that one of his newspapers (The Sun, a popular tabloid that started the "Page 3" phenomenon) has backed the winner of every election, Conservative and Labour ... Mainly because it's Jack Thompson.... On computers and Education in the past two years the local highschool here (I went to it when this happened) decided that, because students were downloading Zsnes and a gazillion games on each computer (because they had nothing to do), they would change the computers from having their own hard drives to having "terminals" linked to a server that would be processing for about 20-25 "terminals" at any given time. needless to say this wansn't very efficant because if one server went down there would be a cascade failure and nobody could do any work, even though the were entire classes base around the computers and all the Attendance and such was done by computer. so basically all the "terminals" did was add more work to the teachers load and cause a lot of grumbling by the students. What did they do with all the old PC's? they simply tossed them in the garbage. I got two free speakers from the Librarian... Victor of the 5 year fan fic competition!
