EnderAndrew
But let's not let that stop us from listening to everything he got to say. I heard the interview he posted earlier, and he said essentially that his goal is to see ESRB ratings (or some equivilant) enforced in the game industry. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> I'm not for the industry telling people what they can play and what they can't. First off, that is the responsiblity of parents. Secondly, the industry does voluntarily censor themselves to an extent. Lastly, this guy's arguement is centered around the notion that video games force people into violent crime, so his entire arguement is invalid. Squidget
Well, in that same interview he mentions that his goal is to destroy rockstar. Does he? Maybe I shouldn't have listened to it at 4 AM last night. I remember him saying that he thought now that Rockstar had released information on Bully the American public (who wouldn't understand that it was a 'not for kids' game) was liable to come down hard on them and probably bankrupt the company. I'd hate to see video games become any kind of major issue in politics and I honestly doubt they will at this stage, but if Rockstar gets manufactured into a major issue then there is a chance they'll crack under the strain. Feel free to steal this sig.
GhostofAnakin
His stance also seems to place the entire blame on the video games and video game industry. Does he ever say anything about parents taking a more active role in making sure their kids aren't exposed to this kind of content? If he was truly in this "for the kids", then he'd also be lashing out at parents who allow their kids to buy these games, rather than just the games themselves. EnderAndrew
There is an ever-growing market of adult gamers. People should be able to release games with adult content. People like Thompson want to make sure these games never get released. I never support censorship.
213374U
But I still stand by my original theory: If some kid can't tell the difference between killing a group of pixels and a real person, they were messed up looong before the games got to them. That's simplifying a tad too much. But at any rate, good luck with "destroying" one of the most successful companies in the video game industry. He's going to need it. - When he is best, he is a little worse than a man, and when he is worst, he is little better than a beast.

SteveThaiBinh
Dearest Mr. Thompson, I agree whole-heartedly. There is a monster among us, lurking in every neighborhood. It has taken hold in our country and will continue to spread it's evil across the planet until it has tainted the minds of innocent children everywhere. Worse than anger, more damaging than greed, it could very well be the downfall of our civilization as we know it. However, this evil is not video games. It's ignorance. The greatest tragedies in history were spawned from something so simple. You sir, represent not only ignorance, but downright stupidity. Yes, there are some dirty games (they're rated M for a reason), just like there are gory movies and graphic novels, but instead of trying to truly prevent deaths, you're chasing an industry. Why? Perhaps it's money, perhaps it's fame, or perhaps, as many of your interviews show, you really are a complete moron. Have a nice day. Think he'd like it? <{POST_SNAPBACK}> I think it would make his day. :D If you're extra lucky, he might threaten you with legal action. Go on, try! "An electric puddle is not what I need right now." Question: Would you support a 10-year-old buying GTA without having to have parental permission to do so? (Note: Again, I disagree with most of his points and I think he's a brain case in general, but I like playing devil's advocate.) Feel free to steal this sig. EnderAndrew
He has suggested these companies should be shut down. Do you know what the difference is between the Mature rating it initially received and the Adults Only rating? Mature is 17+ and Adults Only is 18+ However, Adults Only games aren't carried in major stores like Wal-Mart. He only wants to hit Rockstar in the pocketbook and drive them out of business. And there are people who take Phelps seriously, sadly enough.
GhostofAnakin
Question: Would you support a 10-year-old buying GTA without having to have parental permission to do so? <{POST_SNAPBACK}> The problem I have with these "advocates" is they don't seem interested in the culprit, but at a popular supposed cause of this. Instead of targetting the ratings themself, and targetting parents who don't take an active role in their kid's purchasing habbits, he seems to be after Rockstar itself. IMO, it's like going after the Porn industry instead of going after the stores that sell pornos to children and parents who allow their kids to buy these videos. In other words, children wouldn't have access to porn if retailers and parents were more vigilant, and thus the Porn industry would not be a big deal since only "adults" would have access to it. GhostofAnakin
Does anyone foresee any help, shall we say, remedy to this situation? <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Yeah. For the general public and law makers to stop pandering to these leeches of society and ignore them. If you take away their public podium, they lose interest. Since people like Jack Thompson want to see their names in print and their faces on TV, if you take that away he'll eventually go back into his parents' basement and not bother us anymore.
