Guest Accept Posted April 24, 2007 Posted April 24, 2007 (edited) Um. On the history lesson a couple of months ago i learned that "Arbeit Macht Frei" (It was those words who where written at the main gate of Auschwitz) means something like "Work gives freedom". That's some words with an terrible background, tho. :/ And yeah, "Schnell!" means "Hurry!" :D ------- But nah, i prefers Spanish. ^_^ Me gusta hablar espanol! Edited April 24, 2007 by Accept

Xard Posted April 24, 2007 Posted April 24, 2007 I like word Lied which means "song" a lot too Literal translation to "Arbeit macht frei" is "work makes [you] free". Too bad during all my numerous years of studying german I've been doing everything except trying to learn the damn language How can it be a no ob build. It has PROVEN effective. Walsingham Posted April 24, 2007 Posted April 24, 2007 I must confess that I was thinking the other day that 'works makes you free' is a scientific truism, and uite good general advice. But also that the grotesque associations it holds means that I doubt I wil be making it my sig any time soon. Hardly very considerate. "It wasn't lies. It was just... bull****"." -Elwood Blues tarna's dead; processing... complete. Disappointed by Universe. RIP Hades/Sand/etc. Here's hoping your next alt has a harp.
Morgoth Posted April 24, 2007 Posted April 24, 2007 I wonder if people ever learn non-WW2 Nazi stuff in their German history courses. Rain makes everything better.
Xard Posted April 24, 2007 Posted April 24, 2007 I wonder if people ever learn non-WW2 Nazi stuff in their German history courses. If you're talking about rise of Nationalsozialistische Deutsche Arbeiterpartei and Hitler to power, then yes. At least in Finland whole "thing" about Germany from end of WWI to WWII is teached, reasons that led to NSDAP's rise to power, economic collapse in twenties etc. then yes If you're talking about something completely different, no How can it be a no ob build. It has PROVEN effective. I dare you to show your builds and I will tear you apart in an arugment about how these builds will won them. - OverPowered Godzilla (OPG)
Guest Accept Posted April 24, 2007 Posted April 24, 2007 (edited) The one and only thing we've learnt about Germany in school over here is about WWII, and the holocaust. And with that reading stuffs like "One day in Auschwitz" and other similiar stories. And we even had a visist from a former nazi, who told us all about how cruel and corrupted his lifes been. Morgoth Posted April 24, 2007 Posted April 24, 2007 Too bad. I think it should be better to teach generally the turbulent era from mid 19h century up to WW2 about Middle and Eastern Europe to get a better understanding how and why things stand today. But yeah....HALT! ACHTUNG! Whatever.... Rain makes everything better.
Guest Accept Posted April 24, 2007 Posted April 24, 2007 But yeah....HALT! ACHTUNG! Whatever.... Ah, yes. Achtung = Warning. Some Swedish words actually are quite influenced by the german word of the same thing, so a bit of the language actually is quite easy for, well, atleast for me, to understand.
Morgoth Posted April 24, 2007 Posted April 24, 2007 But I always thought history lessons are dry and cold anyway...you only learn numbers and some biased superficial stuff. That's why I'm currently reading some books from Stefan Zweig, Jospeh Roth, Arthur Schnitzler and (for some fun) Franz Kafka, people who lived around that time period of ~1880 up to the Nazi talkeover of Europe to get a better sensibility from a human perspective. Rain makes everything better.

Well, the Scandinavian languages belong to the Germanic group, so...duh. Rain makes everything better.

No, that's just BAD teaching, generally. Not all Scandinavian languages belong to the germanic group. Stand up and be counted, Finnish sons and daughters! Tigranes Posted April 25, 2007 Posted April 25, 2007 Back when I was in high school (New Zealand), the only time we ever learned about Germany was WWII / Hitler's Rise to Power. The teacher would ask questions such as "Why was Hitler such a monster" and "Could they have done more to stop him?" and "Who suffered the most from Hitler's actions?" Of course, when I suggested that obviously the Germans tolerated Hitler for so long not just because they were "all brainwashed" but because they admired some of what Hitler did, i.e. initial economic rejuvenation or national pride, the teacher didn't care - and more importantly, all the students looked aghast. Thus do we perpetuate ignorance, and I argue that not understanding properly is just as bad as purposeful manipulation of history, like that of the Japanese about WWII history. oh, Kinderporno is brilliant. Absolutely brilliant. My history teachers has always been much above average and I've read a lot of history (and still read) so I don't know if my take on subject is somewhat "false", but IMO we learn in finnish schools all you must to understand why Hitler's cause became success. If you're willing to learn that is. Of course, there wasn't Germany ( in way it's talked about nowadays) before Bismarck so "complete" history is not that big How can it be a no ob build.
