You do really think they just spend 4 years making a processor for a gaming system that can't run games?

You do really think they just spend 4 years making a processor for a gaming system that can't run games? <{POST_SNAPBACK}> It's probably fair to say that some element of rethinking is required. However thats a good thing rather than rehashing something that is little more than an upgraded PC. I have to agree with Volourn. Bioware is pretty much dead now. EnderAndrew Posted June 21, 2005 Posted June 21, 2005 Multi-threaded processing in and of itself is a very different beast to develop for. Development for the PS3 is a new trick to learn, but that doesn't make the 360 a more powerful machine.
Darth Flatus Posted June 21, 2005 Posted June 21, 2005 Cell processors are not just made for gaming. Sony want to put them in everything. But yeah 360 not more powerful than PS3 (like it matters)

Darth Flatus Posted June 21, 2005 Posted June 21, 2005 Sony want to put them in fridges and microwaves and stuff....
ShadowPaladin V1.0 Posted June 21, 2005 Posted June 21, 2005 Sony want to put them in fridges and microwaves and stuff.... <{POST_SNAPBACK}> MegaMan :D I have to agree with Volourn. Bioware is pretty much dead now. Deals like this kills development studios. 478327
Darth Flatus Posted June 21, 2005 Posted June 21, 2005 .. will this mean i am able to play games on my microwave and warm food in my console? Or how about keep food cold in my tv. With all these cell enabled home appliances talking to each other, will they form a clique and shut me out? Worse still what if they conspire against me?
EnderAndrew Posted June 21, 2005 Posted June 21, 2005 Mini-fridges make for a very good endtable in your gaming room. Keep a lamp on top, and cold drinks in it.
mkreku Posted June 21, 2005 Posted June 21, 2005 The processor used in the Xbox 360 and the PS3 aren't that different from each other. They are both multi-core processors, only the PS3 has more (but simpler) cores to consider. Right now it's impossible to say which processor will be the strongest. The only thing we can say is that the PS3 processor has the potential to be much stronger than its Xbox 360 equivalent and both processors will demand a new way of programming from the game developers. I'm quite certain the Xbox 360 will have a better SDK than the PS3 (Microsoft is admittedly good at these things), but if you take a long hard look at the games on the Xbox and the PS2, it doesn't seem to have mattered much that the Xbox is easier to develop for. I mean, the Xbox is a much more powerful machine than the PS2, but the games that are out on both platforms look very much alike (comparing Fight Night Round 2, FIFA 2005, NHL 2005, Burnout 3: Takedown, Colin McRae Rally 2005 among others). Darth Flatus Posted June 21, 2005 Posted June 21, 2005 .... But didnt you see the PS3 clip with all the ducks? That was amazing.. so many rubber duckies!!
mkreku Posted June 21, 2005 Posted June 21, 2005 .... But didnt you see the PS3 clip with all the ducks? That was amazing.. so many rubber duckies!! <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Yes, I did. I also saw the 'Gears of War' demo (the soldier-hunting one, without a name, that's also using Unreal 3 tech), among other things, which is why I don't understand why 'some people' (read: Epiphany) claims the demos were all prerendered. I mean, how do you prerender the duck demo so you can control them like that in real time? How do you prerender a game demo so that you can change camera views on-the-fly like that? It's not possible, unless they were being rendered in real time. Volourn Posted June 21, 2005 Posted June 21, 2005 "then people will be going whats an Xbox360 in 6 years time." 6 years from now, the next genertaion of consoles will be on their way to being released so people will be starting to say 'xbox 360 and PS3? what are those?', anyways. DWARVES IN PROJECT ETERNITY = VOLOURN HAS PLEDGED $250.

I meant it in the way that the dreamcast went. I have to agree with Volourn. Bioware is pretty much dead now. Deals like this kills development studios. 478327
Volourn Posted June 21, 2005 Posted June 21, 2005 There will always be room for improvement; besides the amrket palce hence the customers are conditioned to expect new consoles every 5-10 years (general time line; not exact) so I'd be surprised that there isn't at least a scheduled release for new consoles by 2015 at the latest. As for the Dc; it bombed 'cause it sucked. X-BOX 360 may not be as powerful as PS3; but I doubt it will suck. DWARVES IN PROJECT ETERNITY = VOLOURN HAS PLEDGED $250.

It's much different to just sticking out an upgraded vidoe card every 6 months after all. 10 years will be twice the lifespan of the PS and the PS2 which is a pretty significant increase. And on potential the PS3 wins hands down across the board. IF , and it is only if that can be tapped then the 360 is a totally obsolete machine that wont even be able to run PS3 software because its HDDVD cant handle the capacity. So unless you want to spread the games over 4 disks (you probably recall FFVIII quite well). Then its stuck for the duration. Unless MS introduce another new console earlier which would be a costly move. I have to agree with Volourn. Bioware is pretty much dead now. When you take a simple look at multi-console games that specifically take advantages of the hardware, such as Splinter Cell, you see a huge difference between the visual quality and features between the PS2 and Xbox versions. The majority of the games you listed are EA products by one way or another, and EA builds for the lowest common denominator.
Darth Flatus Posted June 21, 2005 Posted June 21, 2005 5 years is a an eon of technological improvements. So i expect new consoles to made purely on that basis.

But can you really see another jump like that possible? Of course it may well be a good thing. Once you cap on the graphics front you then have to seek otherways to immerse the gamer. Darth Flatus Posted June 21, 2005 Posted June 21, 2005 The graphics thing - people tend to say that every generation "surely the graphics cant get any better!" and yet they do. But largely i agree with you , its difficult to see what the new horizon to break is in gameplay and to imagine how they will make big improvements in graphics. but developers will keep pushing the boundaries requiring more space and power and in turn that will necessitate an update in consumer technology.
