Sony never lied about their technical details. Show me where they claimed they had a certain processor, or processing power that they didn't.

All they talked about at e3 was pure technical specs.

They never said the PS3 was built, and that the demos were running on functional PS3's. Nor did M$ claim the demos were running on functional 360's.

However, the alpha kit for the 360 is roughly 30% of the processing power, if not a mere 25% of the processing power of the final 360's specs.

So, what we saw running in playable demos was playing on a fraction of the power we are going to get in the generation.

Despite this realization, the trendy cynics refuse to believe any of this will actually come to fruition. This isn't merely Sony trying to claim the next generation will look this pretty. Developers are all clammering over the techinical marvels of the upcomming generation.

I won't get into petty debates of the PS2 "suxxing" or the XBox "suxxing", because it's juvenile, and as CAD likes to point out, God hats console fanboys.

Some people preferred the XBox game library, and some preferred the PS2 library. As per usual, I bought all the consoles. Honestly, for the first couple years I really preferred the PS2's exclusive titles, over the XBox's small lineup of exclusive titles. I usually played multiplaform titles on the superior XBox's hardware. With titles like Halo 2, Metroid Prime 2, Metal Gear Solid 3, etc. etc, each console had a title they could argue was a superior exclusive title.

Xbox 360 and Nintendo Revolution

The PS3 will be a waste of Money.  All sony does is mass produce crap as quick as possible to claim the most titles and then people get sucked in.  There were maybe 3 titles on the PS2 that were worth paying for that could not be obtained on either the cube or the xbox ...

Learn from history.

I own 15 PS2 titles. 11 of them are PS2 exclusives. I also own around 20 PSX games that I play on my PS2, all of them were exclusives. I will likely buy a PS3 so I can play all of those, as well as the likely many PS3 exclusives that I will enjoy. If any games come out for Xbox 360 that aren't on PS3 or PC that I'm interested in, I'll get one of those. That unfortunately didn't happen with the Xbox this gen, as every game for Xbox that I was interested in either had a PC or PS2 version. Eliminating my need for an Xbox. The only game I missed out on was Jade Empire, but no single game is worth buying a console over. I need at least 3 games to make the system worth it.

I'm struggling to find those 3 titles for the GC. I haven't played Wind Waker, and I'm not sure I will. I will definately get Twighlight Princess, but RE4 is coming out on the PS2. I really can't find another MUST-HAVE exclusive title on the Gamecube calling out to me.

I'm quite happy with my N64 versions of Mario Kart, Smash Brothers, and F-Zero. And I haven't played Mario Sunshine, but most feel Mario 64 was a much better game. I am replaying that again.

Oh that one was easy. Buying a GB player really swung it.

I have to agree with Volourn.  Bioware is pretty much dead now.  Deals like this kills development studios.

What do you mean?  Buying a GB made you want a GC more or less?

Gameboy player fits underneath the GC and lets you play the whole library of GBA games. That was probably as much a part of buying a GC than for the cube itself. Bit like the back catalogue is going to be a good portion of the motivation to buy a revolution.

The golden sun series alone (which are puzzle heavy RPGS) would be worth the cost of a GC (at todays price).

Just so you know, the back-library isn't free. Nintendo is trying to get you to purchase games you've already purchased on another system.

Wow, that's a first.

And it's a smoke-screen to divert attention away from the fact that they lack a huge library of console exclusives.

Honestly, I play my GBA games on my TV through my XBox, and the VisualBoyAdvance emulator.

Already knew that. It's not about getting games I already own, but games I've missed along the way. Or just for the fact that I'd rather pay a small sum rather than have to dig out the N64 or SNES from the attic every couple of months.

I just don't believe in giving money to a company that doesn't try to give me the same level of quality for my buck. They alienate 3rd party developers, and keep releasing the same things over and over again.

Sony and M$ lose money on their hardware so I can get the best console for my dollar. Nintendo sells much cheaper hardware, and turns a profit despite selling far fewer consoles. They're not trying to push any boundaries.

And Nintendo claims to be the huge innovators, but most of their innovations have been failed gimmics. Sure they gave us the analog stick first, but it was a poor analog stick.

They also gave us the U-Force, Virtua Boy, Super Scope Six, etc. Check out the Donkey Konga drums.

And the Gameboy Micro has the same processor as the Gameboy Advance? I find it hard to believe that the Game Gear released 10 years ago is as powerful as the Advance, and Nintendo can't release anything better today?

Again, they perpetuate second-rate hardware while the Lynx, Game Gear, Nomad, Neo Geo Pocket, etc, etc. were all technically superior hand-helds.

The Nomad was awesome. A handheld Genesis, years before the GBA came out and is basically a handheld SNES.

Ninja Gaiden is a game tough enough you won't beat it in a few days.  Jade Empire has some replay value, and Halo 2 shines best in online and co-op play.  That's not a game you rent.

I beg to differ :) although it was tough enough to require a couple of hours of "training".

Not much replay value in Jade Empire as the skills all do the same thing anyway. And it's about as short as RPGs can get.

If you played online perhaps. I dont so I rented it.

Are you honestly telling me that in a few days you could beat Ninja Gaiden on the toughest modes and get a good rating? 99.9% of the gamers in the world would have serious trouble accomplishing such a feat.

Jade Empire has just as much replay value as KOTOR, and some people enjoy playing that game 8 times over again. Not only do you have two paths (closed-fist and open-fist) with different plots, but many quests have multiple solutions, unlike KOTOR. The game is very cinematic, and I'm curious to see all the movies I might miss playing only one path. Furthermore, the various styles are quite different.

Combat in KOTOR is a matter of hitting one button to queue up Force Wave and Master Flurry. Combat in Jade Empire is just challenging enough to keep me awake, and have to reload a few times. I imagine the higher difficulty will be fun on the second play-through.

Right now I'm really favoring Legendary Strike, and Fortune's Favorite. Both provide decent strength and good speed. Other styles require very differnt strategies. Fighting by draining chi to heal yourself, or using a slow but brutal style supported by paralysis or heaven's wave is very different from playing the game with speed.

I could also play with Transformation styles to try and boost protection against certain attacks.

The plot won't be too different to warrant more than two plays, but the variety in combat styles ensures I can have a different experience on multiple plays, where as with KOTOR combat gets consistently more boring the more I play it.

No , but then most people dont play that way either.

Nowhere near JE dosnt have anything that significantly changes the experience. Where as KOTOR has at least few. Compared to KOTOR it's also significantly shorter (being told I should walk everywhere to stretch out the gameplay on the bioware boards is still one on of my "priceless moments". Comparitves of the two combat systems are flawed since one is a hands on system and the other is an indirect system. You would have to compare JE to other hands on systems and there it fairs badly.

Jade Empire comes down to 3 moves. Magic attack (ranged) disable (support) strike. Other than that they all do the same thing. Transform styles... Well if you want the game even easier then you will love um. Nothing changes per level except modifiers you start off with all the attacks (normal, hard, area) and they stay the same through the game. Compared to the likes of Tales of Symphoinia (another hands on system) it's a joke.

Two plays would take just about as long as one play of KOTOR. I even bought the strat guide to see what I had missed in 20 hours because I couldnt believe an RPG could be that short.

Anyway I wouldnt be opposed to hands on combat system in KOTOR III as long as it wasnt as simplistic.

PC Format #176, July 2005, p 25 has an hardware comparison between the Xbox 360, PS3 and the PC.

Xbox scores 6, PS3 scores 7 and PC scores 10.

Shame there is no such thing as the PC then isnt it.

Love to see what a $300 PC would score

I might concede that it was a little biased (what the PC Format?) ... interesting that the opinion expressed basically mirrors that here:

The Xbox 360 512MB 700MHz DDR3 shared between ATI 500MHz & triple core 3.2GHz (2 hw threads / core)

The PS3 256MB Cell 8-core simultaneous threads, with nVidia 256MB 550MHz DDR3

XBox 720p and 1080i (theoretical resolution of 1920x1080)

PS3 1080p standard (HDTV top spec)

It's two crucial aspects, IMO:

Xbox shared 512MB RAM for CPU and ATI (versus PS3 dedicated 256MB each CPU nVidia)

PS3 multi-core processor ⇒ steep learning curve for devs

I heard Halo 2 was just Halo with better graphics and a crappier ending. As I didn't like Halo, I assume I wouldn't like Halo 2.

Why do people keep assuming its hard to program for? Various developers themselves have said its not hard.
