Hello Obsidian and fellow posters.

I'm new to posting on this board but I've been following it on and off for some time to gather information on KotOR 2.

I played the first KotOR (on PC) and while I really enjoyed it, none of my other 50 games has caused the same amount of grief that this game did.

(Due to the ATI driver/loading crash bug. I have a HIS Excalibur Radeon 9800 Pro Ice-Q card in my rig.)

Obviously, the faults of the fist KotOR can't be blamed on Obsidian, but the fact that the old problems haven't been removed from the sequel (as far as I can gather from reading this and other forums) is less than perfect, to put it mildly. And this is not even touching upon the host of new bugs introduced.

Now, since Planescape: Torment and the Fallout series are some of my favourite games I had high hopes for Obsidian's sequel; hopes that many reviews say are almost fulfilled if it wasn't for the game's buggy state.

Due to which I haven't bought the game yet.

The thing is, I want the game to be as playable as possible when I sit down to dedicate time to it. One thing that's for certain is that I won't buy it and start playing when I know that another patch (the sound and movie resolution one) is comming 'soon'.

Also, I find that my time can be spend more productively than checking up for patches when the producer/distributor of these can't even come close to announcing an ETA.

So Obsidian, what do you say? Could you create a mailing list for those of us that are holding off buying the game until it's actually finished (or at least patched up as much as it's going to be)?

I'm sure that those who already bought the game and suffered from some of it's bugs would like to know when it would be a good time to revisit the game as well.

To Obsidian and Lucas Arts: If it helps your motivation to get this right, you would do well to consider that I'm certainly not the only one holding off my purchase until the game gets the attention it needs. In short: Good game = More $$$ - even this far after it's release.

Decent idea. Have a nice stay here

That is a cool idea. Although I come to this site everyday anyway to talk to you good people, this would be beneficial to those who only visit looking for news on a patch. Outstanding

War is an ugly thing, but not the ugliest of things. The decayed and degraded state of moral and patriotic feeling which thinks that nothing is worth war is much worse. This thread is now more than a week old, and with about 100 views per day it seems likely that at least one Obsidian Entertainment employee has read it.

And just to make sure they have, I send them this mail on the 13th (6 days ago):

Hello Obsidian,

I'm the original poster of this thread:

http://forums.obsidianent.com/index.php?showtopic=34038

and I would really like to hear your input on whether or not it would be possible to create a mailing list for those who would like to know how the support for KotOR2 is comming along.

Obviously, a lot of people will be holding off their purchase/playing/re-playing of this game, as long as there's still patches announced and in the works.

Thanks for your help and willingness to be looking after your customers.

Regards,

My Name

They haven't replied.

I'm beginning to wonder if Obsidian Entertainment is under a gag order from Lucas Arts.

If so, don't worry Obsidian; you can tell us..."

Sadly I don't think they do as well. But the idea is nice.

But really, Fallout 2 was an almost unplayable mess when it was released (it wasn't that hard to get stuck permanently, and there were lots of broken quest etc), and Planescape: Torment had bugs even after the last patch from Black Isle (some were fixed in a fan patch a while later). I was disappointed with the bugs in SL as well, but after thinking a bit about it I guess it should have been expected.

Edit: I still loved Planescape: Torment (my third fav game ever) and Fallout 2 by the way.

Dear Obsidian Entertainment,

since members of your team have responded to posts in this forum on several occasions, I'm assuming you're reading these lines as well.

More than a month ago someone said that the sound and resolution patch only would be a couple of days off.

Since then we haven't heard anything from you.

This has caused a lot of frustration for many forum members, which in turn has led to a lot of negativity; a situation which may or may not have scared you off.

What you need to understand is, that people only come to post here because the game you have worked so hard on actually matters to them.

What we're giving you by being here, is a unique opportunity to have a two-way communication between you - the developer - and us - your potentially best customers.

You see, the people that care so much about a game that they can be bothered to find the developers own site to follow it's development and ask for news are obviously the ones who'll be most vocal about said game's exeptional quality, pushing sales and knowledge of that game through word of mouth and posts on other boards.

And for some inexplicable reason you're choosing to piss all that away.

For every day of continued silence you're alienating your most valuable group of customers.

Would it kill you to give us an update?

You don't even have to come out with a set date for the patch. A small note about it still being worked on, or that it have been canceled, would really help a lot.

Thanks for your time.

I don't remember where, but didn't we have word that the second patch had been finished by OE and was currently in the hands of the LucasArts Q&A department?

Anybody?

Well do you think it's fair for the people who have bought the game and then experience that it is very faulty, that Obsidian says that they have finished the patch and that LA now has it and then they don't say ANYTHING for a month?! Why can't they just give us an update once a week, where they could say that LA Q&A still has it?! Why the silence.... do Obsidian really think that this kind of behavior will be beneficial to their image?! Can't they understand that gamers won't forget how they were ignored and that they are not doing themselves a favor by being silent!

WAKE UP OBSIDIAN.... now give us an update!! Just say something!!

It's pretty amazing how little information is coming out. I don't think any developer has posted anything on this forum for a month or so. Do they really have nothing to say? Maybe they've been told not to post here, or perhaps they just don't find anything interesting. They should make a bit more of an effort, I think.

Woah, cowboy, switch to decaf! I was just trying to let the original poster know that as far as I knew we did recieve word. *sigh* I share your frustration, but I was the wrong person on which to vent it.

Oh sorry if it sounded like I was venting of on you :"> .... it was meant to be understood as a calm question to you and then venting of on Obsidian..... but now that I have read it again, it is quite easy to misinterpret my post.... but again, I wasn't steaming of on you!

Okay, no problem -- I just wanted to let you know that some news had been posted.

Just watch where you point that thing next time, okay? :(

In this thread I've suggested that Obsidian Entertainment create a mailing list for updates about their patches.

I've quoted an e-mail which I've sent to two of their different addresses.

I've tried to explain how the negativity that abounds in this forum stems from peoples interest in this game coupled with frustration from the lack of updates.

I've asked OE to throw us a bone in the form of just any kind of update.

In return Obsidian Entertainment has chosen to disappear from these forums and refused to answer any e-mails.

I'm positively baffled by this level of blatant disregard for their customers and sadly it's comming to the point where this whole mess is starting to negatively affect my view of anything concerned with OE and LA.

Even though I was really looking forward to playing this game, I'm becomming more and more pleased with my decision to hold off my purchase until the patches were out - which it currently seems they never will be.

Since it appears that initial sales are the only thing these companies are concerned with (as opposed to the deliverance of a solid product with the required post production support), I'm hoping that more of you (the buyers) will take this same approach (as me) in the future, as that hopefully will force developers and publishers to either get it right the first time or to dedicate the necessary resources post release.

On another note, have anybody here tried writing Lucas Arts about this situation? Have you gotten any replies?

I haven't been to LA's site, by I'm assuming some of you have. For those who are familiar with it, could you please post the appropiate e-mail address for contacting them regarding KotOR 2?

Then I (and hopefully others here as well) can start writing them, in the hopes that it'll make them face up to their responsibility...

I doubt they want to pay for the necessary bandwidth to get everyone out there patched with higher quality movies and music. I wouldn't be surprised if the patch died at LA Q&A.

I must admit, there's no way I'm buying this game until the patch is released. I borrowed it from a friend until it comes out.

But surely they would have told us about this. LucasArts would have told Obsidian and Obsidian would have posted an announcement on these boards or on the main page. They wouldn't just let weeks past and then make a casual mention of it having been abandoned, buried on page 14 of some obscure thread. Would they?

Would you come out and publicly admit that you're not going to release something that should have been in a game to begin with because you're too cheap to supply the bandwidth for it?

The wisest course of action for them would be to drop it and pretend nothing was ever said. Let's face it, there's not exactly a legion of people clammoring for the patch, and the game is fairly old news. Why sacrifice a chunk of change to support a patch for a game that people have already paid for, and, in most cases, already played through several times?

Well, not quite in those words, no, but from Obsidian's point of view, if LucasArts has blocked this, then the sooner they release this information, the sooner the hue and cry will explode and die down, and the sooner the whole thing is put behind them.

Obsidian, why has the media patch not been released?

They couldn't openly say anything about it because it'd embarrass LucasArts. If they just stop talking about it, there won't even be an outcry over it. The people that care will just get frustrated and go on to bigger and better things. Sure, they may lose some customers in the long run, but they'll be able to save a few bucks on bandwidth.

Modern business really is a stupid, ugly beast with little foresight. I wouldn't be surprised if they just let it fade from people's memories without another word on the subject. I certainly wouldn't be happy, but I wouldn't be surprised.
