mkreku
And I would actually replace the Opteron's with an AMD Athlon 64 FX-55 2.6 GHz Socket 939, 1 MB cache, BOXED. For the motherboard I'd choose an Asus A8N-SLI Deluxe Motherboard S939 PCI-E nForce4 SLI, 4xSATA2, Dual-GbLAN, ATX. That way you'd save enough money to take advantage of the SLI-function and buy two ATI RADEON X800 XT PLATINUM AGP8X 256MB DDR3 Dual (Retail) instead! The performance increase (for about the same amount of money) would be drastic. For gaming that is. If you're going to use your monster for film/video/heavy graphics editing, then I suggest you keep the two Opteron's.. Edit: Wait a sec! I noticed your graphics card is an AGP-card! Don't! Make sure your motherboard at least supports PCI-E and get one of those cards! Panic! Panic! New suggestions: AMD Athlon 64 FX-55 2.6 GHz Socket 939, 1 MB cache, BOXED. Oerwinde
Sounds about like mine. Only I have onboard sound, a CD writer instead of a DVD writer, only a 19 inch samsung magicbright, and my processors were Intel Xeon. All for $4800 CAD. I do 3d which is the reason for the Dual system. If you're not doing something like that, go with a single processor system and knock 1000+ off the price. zer"0"
WOW! That's a monster. If you do alot of CAD/Design, ~CPU-intensive, number crunching, work station. That machine is spot on. For heavy video-processing go Intel. If its for general gaming/use its a bit overkill. As few games/apps really need or use multi-cpu bandwith. mkreku
I'd still suggest you'd get an SLI equipped motherboard and make sure it has PCI-E ports too. PCI-E is up to twice as fast as AGP8X and it is going to be the new standard. The best part about SLI is that if you get one GPU now, you can always upgrade later and get 50-80% increase in performance for the cost of a new GPU (which should be cheaper by the time you need to upgrade). The problem is that you have to go with Nvidia (for SLI) instead of ATI, so if you don't like Nvidia there's a problem.. Swedes, go to: Spel2, for the latest game reviews in swedish! EnderAndrew
Mind you, it's been about a year since I heard this, but I heard we're barely hitting the bandwidth of AGP 4x on most cards. PCI-E is the future, and I don't doubt that. But I upgrade video cards about as often as I upgrade the mobo and proc as well. I doubt I'll need PCI-E for another year or two. And the limit was eliminated in 93 with NT and earlier with Linux I think. Windows 2000 ran games just fine that I could tell.
EnderAndrew
Even before then, MS had methods in DOS to load files into high memory, and eventually memory managers for RAM above 1 meg. MS is still a horrid company though. And my info in regards to the AGP bandwidth comes from someone who helps make microprocessors. I admit it's second hand information, but I largely trust the source.
