When you do a Ship fight characters not in your party fight along side you, if you equip them with better weapons etc unique items etc do they have those items when they fight?

Yes, they do.

What if you don't manually level them up? Will they actually be at level 1? This has become relevant to me now that I play on higher difficulty... I have never bothered to do any leveling up on Mirke, for instance.

Yes, they will.  They don't level on their own.

Ok, thanks. I will have to spend some time leveling up, then. On lower difficulty, you can simply ignore things like this.

If you don't do boarding fights you can ignore that on any difficulty. ;)

Agreed. But I very much prefer that to naval combat. Naval combat is cumbersome, lasts too long and you can't quit the game from the naval combat screen. D'oh, that's too many downsides for me. 😀

ironically on easier fights it's still not a concern because your crew members level up automatically as you do naval combat. kinda funny to imagine eld engrim kicking everyone's butt while a nude serafen (someone i perpetually sideline) just gets KO-ed
