Dead Skin Mask Posted May 31, 2004 Posted May 31, 2004 how bout a beginning cutscene, which introduces the game, a middle cutscene, the big plot twist, and an end cutscene, which is the end. That works for me... Just don't over due it! The key is short and too the point. B) Cheers!
Shdy314 Posted May 31, 2004 Posted May 31, 2004 While I'm thinking about it, would you also like a button on the 'End Game' panel that lets you just launch the most recent save, rather than going back to the Load Game panel? -Akari YES! Please god yes.
Gorth Posted May 31, 2004 Posted May 31, 2004 Then again, maybe we want to force you to watch a cutscene over and over so you can get a feeling for what it's like debugging one! Akari is a nice guy No thanks, currently trying to spot the cause of a deadlock in a 250 user application... <_> Thanks for clarifying. While it doesn't speed up the cutscenes in Kotor1, it's nice to know, that we aren't just waiting for arbitrarily timed dialogues.... “He who joyfully marches to music in rank and file has already earned my contempt. He has been given a large brain by mistake, since for him the spinal cord would surely suffice.” - Albert Einstein
Iolo Posted May 31, 2004 Posted May 31, 2004 Okay on that one I'd agree. Beginning of game and end of game cutscenes work well. In between, it should be no cutscenes with the storyline told purely through the characters in the game and the player's actions. Cutscenes sometimes show things happening that I would not have done if I had controlled my character during that scene instead, for instead. how bout a beginning cutscene, which introduces the game, a middle cutscene, the big plot twist, and an end cutscene, which is the end. That could work, depending on what the cutscene was, in the middle plot twist. I remember how Bastila was kidnapped in KOTOR1 and you had no control over it? I kind of like how Deus Ex handled things which I don't remember having too many cut scenes. When you were captured by the German, it was an impossible fight against him but you had the option to keep on fighting him until you were captured. You found out your brother or that friend of yours in UNATCO were still alive not through a cut scene either. I prefer game developers writing the storyline to directly involve the player rather than taking control away through a cut scene. Providing more choices during the storyline makes for a better game.
Maria Caliban Posted May 31, 2004 Posted May 31, 2004 I didn't mind the "leaving planet X" cut scenes or the "arriving on planet X" cut scenes but the "leaving planet X/going to hyperspace/entering hyperspace/leaving hyperspace/arriving on planet Y" cut scenes were annoying. If I leave one planet and arrive on another I can pretty much hazard a guess that I traveled through space. "When is this out. I can't wait to play it so I can talk at length about how bad it is." - Gorgon.
EnderAndrew Posted May 31, 2004 Posted May 31, 2004 I think that's a fair assessment. I felt like Bioware felt the need to show the few cutscenes they had over and over again.
Iolo Posted May 31, 2004 Posted May 31, 2004 Yes it was overkill. I suspect it was part of their desire to make the game more cinematic. But I didn't buy the game to play a movie. I bought it to play a game.

I guess I just like the idea of things going really fast. Either that or I am easily amused. *sees something out of the corner of his eye* Oh shinny thing! Cheers!

Which then laughed you into the wonderfully tedious minigame that was for all intents and purposes impossible to fail. And then when you won that straight back to the movies. :D
EnderAndrew Posted May 31, 2004 Posted May 31, 2004 Are you kidding? After playing the turret mini-game, I burned my old X-Wing games. Who needs those anymore?
meek Posted May 31, 2004 Posted May 31, 2004 Didn't Mark do the voice for Luke in Jedi Outcast and Jedi Academy? No, he didn't. *Gets Jedi Academy manual* It was Bob Bergin. And, heh, apparently Jennifer Hale (Bastila's voice) did also female Jaden for JA.
EnderAndrew Posted May 31, 2004 Posted May 31, 2004 I noticed while playing Lionheart that Jennifer Hale did voice acting in that as well, though I prefered her Bastilla voice.

Oh, I hated the cut scene where Bastilla got kidnapped. I just finished kicking Malak around and then SHE comes barging in telling me to run away.. pshh. That scene probably would have been better if it had taken all control away from the PC including the fight. At least it would have made more sense if it actually looked like you were being beat by Malak. I think cut scenes can really help in advancing the story or perhaps explaining some of the back-story if they're done right. I'm also not opposed to rendered movies as long as they aren't too obtrusive. P.S. The Warcraft3 movies were absolutely amazing. (And I vote YES for a "reload last saved game button")
LostStraw Posted May 31, 2004 Posted May 31, 2004 No what I noticed about that cutscene is no matter what Bastilla has that yellow staff saber. If you equip Bastilla with lets say...armor...and a blue single saber, she'll still be wearing the normal Bastilla clothes, with a yellow staff saber. Im always like "what the....how did she change clothes and equipment so fast...and why?" lol...Oh well I guess Bioware didn't feel it was important to render different clothes and equipment depending on the situation. It was the same way with Carth, and somehow after that cutscene I ended up with two of Carth's blasters instead of just the original one. Anywho...
maia Posted May 31, 2004 Posted May 31, 2004 Another big annoyance is when an NPC is taken away during a lengthy cutscene and takes all his/her equipment along. When such things happen, the equipment should automatically return to the group inventory, IMHO. Yes, and there must be a save point at the beginning of swoop races. It drove me (and probably other less adept racers) to distraction to go through the same cutscenes again and again until I could beat the race. And a save point in the beginning of the turret game as well . I had few problems with it, unless I was distracted, but some people did and there were quite a few points where the game was sandwiched between lengthy cinematics.,

EnderAndrew Posted June 1, 2004 Posted June 1, 2004 There was a bug on Manaan that duplicated equipment that I discovered.
Dead Skin Mask Posted June 1, 2004 Posted June 1, 2004 There was a bug on Manaan that duplicated equipment that I discovered. There is one on Taris as well. Cheers!
Dead Skin Mask Posted June 1, 2004 Posted June 1, 2004 So much for the game not having bugs. Ha! Yeah like the Galaxy droid and the infamous Mission glitch on the Leviathan which thank the gaming gods I never got! Cheers!
Jenai Starr Posted June 2, 2004 Posted June 2, 2004 Longer cutscenes?!? What a brilliant idea! Perhaps the developers haven't already thought of that?
