ziphnor Posted July 16, 2018 Posted July 16, 2018 Hi, There are lots of enchantments and similar in the game that do significant damage over time, but in small portions. For example 6 burn damage per 1 second. However, most enemies have more than 6 AR, does that mean they will take no damage from this effect, or is it calculated differently?
anathanielh Posted July 16, 2018 Posted July 16, 2018 (edited) Armor in this game isn’t like typical Damage reduction. It’s all based around penetration instead. If the 6 fire damage you dealt had 6 penetration and the enemy has 6 fire armor, then they will take 100% dmg (6 dmg). If your penetration was lower (5,4,3,...) damage would be lowered to a minimum of 25% (1.5 fire dmg) based on the difference of penetration and armor (too lazy to look up exact amount per difference). If your penetration is double or above the enemy’s armor class (in this case 12+), then you will over-penetrate the enemy, which leads to 130% dmg (~8 fire dmg). tldr; You’ll still do 6 dmg per second against that enemy because life wills it. Loren Tyr Posted July 16, 2018 Posted July 16, 2018 Yeah, in PoE2 the DoT effects are much better in this regard. In PoE1 they would indeed tend to crap out against heavier armour, because it got subtracted every time and you ended up with the minimum 20%. Because it's now based on Penetration and separate from the actual damage amount, low damage and high damage attacks get affected by AR equally provided the Penetration is the same. The drop in damage is -25% per point of PEN under AR by the way. So in the example, you hit the minimum of 25% / 1.5 damage at a PEN of 3 (not accounting for Might and such, obviously). It's evaluated every time by the way, so in the example you hit someone with a 6 PEN DoT and they then increase their Fire AR to 9, the damage will be reduced for subsequent ticks, etc. 1
Boeroer Posted July 17, 2018 Posted July 17, 2018 Oh, the last part is good to know, thanks. I mean the first part as well, but I already knew that, sooo... Deadfire Community Patch: Nexus Mods

Doing it right was possible but noo let's make a new armor system! Vancian =/= per rest.
