Watercolour portraits were meant to be like a quick, easy and cheap way of doing it. So I imagine a lot of them are just copied from photographs, we know some are based on devs.

Not as bad as when you see Tali's actual face in Mass Effect, but it's close.

The normal painted portraits are based off real people as well.
