  1. When you say "Watchmen-y," do you mean the classic graphic novel? I loved that book, although I was a tad confused at certain points in the story.
  2. "Cant, I was actually expecting something a little more serious in reply, though I understand how uncomfortable it must be to have cherished beliefs challenged in such a way, so I will continue to expound some thoughts so that you may digest them and perhaps reply in some meaningful way." Give me a break. You've got to produce a challenge if you expect me to respond. This is just another example of your usual sniping. Where's Qwerty to put you in your place? Oh, you'd just lock the thread and then post another volume after the fact. Maybe you'd think about it a week this time instead of a few days. If you wanted to have a serious discussion, maybe you should avoide passages like: "...I understand how uncomfortable it must be to have cherished beliefs challenged in such a way..." You wouldn't have express such a thought if you'd spent more time reading what I've written on this matter and less time trying to figure out the next thing you're going to say. To be clear, not that you'll bother trying to understand this, but I've always said that science is the last word on our physical world. I've even argued against the classic Christian argument, "disprove God exists." Want a meaningful discussion? Stop attributing meanings to my posts that the actual words don't support. Stop trying to score points in every response. Stop acting like this is some sort of ridiculous celbrity grudge match. We have enough common ground that your don't have to resort to these sorts of petty rhetorical tricks to try to come out ahead. You want me to give an honest opinion and listen to yours with respect? Begin your posts with honesty and respect. I doubt it will happen, but I promise I will eat crow and then return to a more respectful debate if you do.
  3. I dunno. I think taks and Gorth have always been the most reasonable among us when it comes to religion. I understand they disagree with me completely, but they've always been willing to hear different views and respond honestly with their opinion.
  4. ERHHNNNNN Wrong answer. First of all, I've got Wiki. By reading Wiki, I know everything Dawkins has to say anyhow, right? ...But there's more! I've also read some of Dawkins' work. I've even got one of his books and *gasp*, I've read it! OMG! Eldar's read the book but hasn't succumbed to Dawkins' mind numbing wisdom. (You want to ask which book, don't you? hahaha) You are the embodiment of someone taking passages to suit his need and then posting them in this forum. ...But that only works from a Wiki article. When I post a quote from a webpage you cite, it's just not fair game. ...But, regardless of whatever else your hero has written, my analysis of the passage would remain the same. Finally (well, there is no finally until the thread closes. OOPS, that would only be final for folks who aren't moderators and can't keep posting in closed threads) aherm. Where was I? Oh, yeah, there was nothing new in your post. Nothing. Hell, you have cited the same arguments before. Hell, why read Dawkins when his apostle is here to lead us on the golden path? I was right. This is going to be a fun thread. :Eldar's happy smile icon:
  5. "There is every reason to think that famous Einsteinisms like 'God is subtle but he is not malicious' or 'He does not play dice' or 'Did God have a choice in creating the Universe?' are pantheistic, not deistic, and certainly not theistic. 'God does not play dice' should be translated as 'Randomness does not lie at the heart of all things.' 'Did God have a choice in creating the Universe?' means 'Could the universe have begun in any other way?' Einstein was using 'God' in a purely metaphorical, poetic sense. So is Stephen Hawking, and so are most of those physicists who occasionally slip into the language of religious metaphor. Paul Davies's The Mind of God seems to hover somewhere between Einsteinian pantheism and an obscure form of deism - for which he was rewarded with the Templeton Prize (a very large sum of money given annually by the Templeton Foundation, usually to a scientist who is prepared to say something nice about religion). . . ." Other than being little more than petty diatribe, the main problem with the passage is that Dawkins is prepared to tell us the best way to interpret what someone else has said rather than letting us read and evaluate the passages for ourselves. Of course, the debate over atheism and theism existed during Einstein
  6. I hear you, friend. Just a little more patience. That's all I'm asking. :Cant's GunsNRoses icon: In the meantime, remember that most of my posts are rambling. My posting habits, like life, are driven by whim more than anything else. :Cant's tongue in cheek grin icon: ...or I could just be building up anticipation. :Cant's third smiley icon in one post just for theslug icon: Finally, I'll dish out dirt for you, meta, but only dirt on me. Anything silly, stupid, or downright questionable that I've done, I'll post. So, some dirt, just the Cant variety. I will ramble one more thing. I thought, when I started, that it was cool to discover a bug that other folks had a hard time replicating. I've found that I have a knack for some of these. this is true as they pertain to pathfinding in particular. I now hate such bugs with a purple passion befitting a demon lord.
  7. Hmmm, doublenecroposting. I hope you guys don't hold it against me. I've received permission to post my first interview, although my plan is still to be patient and wait until I'm released from the project. As far as the project goes, I have high hopes. I honestly believe in the game. That's biased, to be sure, but I doubt if I make another foray into game development at any level. I don't need the job and I don't have any other vested interest. If I thought it sucked, I wouldn't act otherwise. I would be cautious and then hope folks forgot I started this in the first place. I would keep my mouth shut. ...But I won't. This will be a great game, even if there are a lot of things to resolve before it will be done. I've been holding on to some of my favorite quotes in the meantime. For example, one of the QA guys mused one day about the irony of writing up a bug about the designer's use of the word pedantic. haha Well, it's moving pretty fast now, and I have permission to post what I have so far. I'm just deciding how I want to approach it and then I can share things with you. I warn you, however, that I'm not going to "dish the dirt." I'm going to post my impressions honestly, of that you can be assured. What I won't do is gossip or engage in any other sort of shenanigan. Also, I'm not a reporter. I'm just some guy who was lucky enough to try his hand at QA for a while. I'll post interviews, but they'll be pretty lighthearted by nature. I've got one done and others on the way, so I hope to have four or five finished by the end.
  8. What's a Mary Sue? I have to say in computer games, I usually end up staying with tried and true character builds, but so much depends on what the game lets you do that I find enough variety in what I play. When I DM, I use a non-weighted point buy system.
  9. That's what I was thinking. Just run the settings on yours and switch it. Safe mode, as meta mentioned, should work if it's a matter of resolution. Also, make sure you look at her monitor. What I'm getting from you is that the monitor works while the computer boots but displays an error message when Windows starts. I'd make sure she plugged it in properly and that there aren't any peculiar features on her monitor. You'd be amazed. Finally, unless money is really, really tight, monitors are pretty cheap nowadays.
  10. It's true. It had to happen the way it did because it happened. There was no other outcome, I'm sure. Talk about a sort of distorted faith.
  11. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pan_(mythology) :Cant's toothy grin icon: Pan got a bad rap for being random and capricious. One of the accounts of the musical contest between Apollo and Pan tells of a stalemate between the two. Apollo turned his lyre upside down and played a tune and won the day when Pan could not do the same with his pipes. The ancient Greeks tended to look at stringed instruments as more refined and civilized than wind instruments.
  12. Yeah, but it probably is better suited for computer and console and would get less spam. :D
  13. Used to be one of my faves also.
  14. Hey, maybe I can send one of the interviews I've done here at work to you guys, Gorth. I don't know that it will interest you, but once I get it okayed (however THAT works) then I could give it to you Winterwind folk. :Cant's cheerful grin icon: You can even display it under Eldar's name if you'd like. haha
  15. In another reality, because I can't listen to it at work: Iron Man -- Black Sabbath
  16. For my wife's happiness, I was enduring Chris Isaac's entire Heart Shaped Album. Now I'm listening to Dire Straights Brothers In Arms album. Much better.
  17. No, it was Andrew Johnson. Those wacky radical republicans impeached him, but he was not removed from office. Arkan's right. If enough of the people exerted their will to have him removed, Bush would be. If enough of the people exerted their will, we wouldn't have a president anymore. This exercise is pointless. Moving forward with impeachment won't help the Democrats and so they won't do it. As much as the more fringe elements of their constituency would applaud the move, Democrats want to win the next presidential election. Impeaching Bush would make them look bad and the trial would fail. Even if they could remove him from office, he's far more useful to Democrats as President come election time.
  18. ...slack jawed villain in a Chuck Norris film... Gawd, where do you come up with these? hahaha
  19. Jags, damn you, report on Pixies already. We're going to end up having this thread killed earlier than vol. 7, if that's possible.
  20. Damn! I was going to bloviate and put more people on trial! To be fair, I only put one person on trial and then I only wrote a prosecution and defense. Okay, okay, no more trials. Instead, it will be the TOMBS football game report. hehehehe
  21. Jerk. If I shove you in the glass, will it be half full or half empty? ...And it turns out we're optimists because the glass is half empty is losing by a landslide.
  22. Okay, I'll ask for a review for myself. I know this is something akin to being worked over with a rolling pin, but here goes. I know there are folks out there who'd like to smack me around a bit. Here's your chance. ...And remember, as long as it's not completely overboard, you can be pretty cruel in TOMBS and get away with it. I have reports I'll be doing later. Most of you guys know that means sometime over the next several months, as well as how cruel I can be.
  23. Something the Boy Said -- Sting
  24. I think you're a yutz.
